I'm sick of Korea.
« on: June 22, 2010, 10:11:44 AM »
For real. These people are the biggest frauds around. Every fucking single thing is a dog and pony show. No one actually does anything or says anything honestly for fear of pissing somebody off. They're always busy figuring out ways to fucking lie to each other to keep everyone happy. It's completely and utterly bizarre. I'm exhausted with it.

That said, I just resigned for year 2 because all my lessons are done and I can save mad bank ad then go fuck around for 2 or 3 years and never come back.

I kind of feel bad for those korean kids who are being taught in such a superficial environment.  You should start your own school and raise these kids right GilloD.

Here's whats making me crazy right now: There's a big English speaking competition next week. District-wide. They asked if I'd help and I said sure. Never mind the fact that the woman in charge of the English Education Office doesn't speak a word of English, she wants to have this competition. Okay!

So we hold try outs and our best and brightest come and we pick for 2 divisions: A 'Song & Chant' group and an essay group. The essay kid, Jun, is super smart and works incredibly hard. He's not fluent, his English is kind of lousy, but he works harder than anyone else I've seen in this god damn school. If I pass him in the hallway I see him reading his essay and then practicing. He's good!

So he wrote this kind of firey essay about a territory dispute with Japan that was really informative, clever and balanced. I work with him for about a week on it and he's really coming along. Then my co-teachers get involved. They tell him- to his face- that his topic is boring and he needs a new essay. I fight them on it (Japanese colonialism is a hell of a topic for a 5th grader), but they make him change.

He writes an essay of Marie Curie. It's not as good, but I help him get in shape. I basically refuse to do any serious re-writes on it. It's his essay,r ight? I correct grammar and make suggestions and point out weird English, but I'm not like rewriting whole chunks. Yesterday my co-teacher comes in and she's like re-written his whole essay in busted ass, suck-shit English (Misses Curie was a safty coroner. she dids many of things to helps people). She tells both of us that none of the judges really speak English and they don't give a fuck if he wrote it or not. He just has to look like a pro and said some words confidently.

That's Korea in a nut shell. No one gives a fuck if you're actually good or not good at whatever, they just want a fucking show. The 'Song & Chant' division still can't sing their song right (Rets go swimming in da rake!), but they've been practicing their dance until NINE FUCKING PM every night because that's all the judges can understand.

Suicide is the THIRD leading killer in Korea. Is it any wonder?

The two are very close, but there are certain key differences.

- Korean porn is even worse than Japanese porn
- Japanese people don't eat dogs
- You can buy games in Japan

This country is awful. These people are just absolutely terrible to each other. They turn every fucking thing into a fight and claw each other's eyes out over the pennies. I'm trying to take my contract-mandated vacation and they keep trying to fuck me out of it so I can be just as miserable and as fucked up and as heartless and angry and disgusted as they are.

Good riddance. I'm staring at the contract right now having a serious fucking debate about whether or not to sign it.

Yeah, I wouldn't have stood for that. The school putting their own agenda in front of the boy's is really shitty.
I'd have pushed over a bookcase or two if I were you, GilloD.

But thats how these kids grow up. And then they get older and they start fucking each other over and shit to do the same thing. My wife had a bunch of her high school kids over for dinner one day and one of them was telling us how their Social Studies lesson that week had been on how you needed to make a lot of money or no one would ever respect you.

Her co-teacher is a homeroom rep, she she's at school until 10 and she gets there at 7. She just had a baby. She literally sees her kid maybe an hour or two a day, maybe. One of my co-teachers had to bring in her kid one day and at the end she was crying and I was like "Dude, what's up?" and she was telling me how her kid was begging to come in the next day because he never gets to see her.

It's just this ultra-capitalist, ugly, fraudulent show.

Haha. Dude, I don't know how you have time. I jave 29 class hours every week and only one of my co-teachers speaks any English. And she's so super busy she barely ever shows up.

fuuu. Although I did spend the last 40 minutes reading.

They moved my afterschool class (1st graders, who speak 0 English, with no co-teacher) to a room with no computer or CD player. And the copier broke. And they yelled at me and said I wasn't teaching enough. I pretty much lost it on them this morning. I was like "What? Your GREAT idea to stick a bunch of 5 year olds who dont speak English in a room with a guy who doesn't speak English isn't panning out? That idea didn't work? Wow. Really wow, it sounded great. Come to that class and see if you can get them to pay attention for 1 minute without using Korean. Try it." and they said "Oh, but you must understand" which is what they always say when something mindbendingly fucked up occurs.

There may be some truth to this, but I also seem to end up in goofy situations through no fault of my own.

Anyway, everything is all cleared up. I'm still kind of sick of this country, but I feel better. I've been enormously blessed in a million ways and it's really easy to forget them when you feel like the walls are closing in. Thanks for the vent-space, anyway
