I don't think playing solo puts you at a disadvantage with a game that uses a turn-based fully controllable AI party  :P

Has DQVI gotten announced yet?  I'm more interested in that one than in IX.

I'll buy it.  I have nothing left to do in Days of Ruin.  Awesome game but it needs a hard mode.

It was a fun time waster, but it felt way too kiddy-oriented.

Do you like 7? Because 6 uses the same job system, yet even more annoying, and even more annoying in the remake (fewer battles).

Slime Mori Mori 2 was great.  Tank battles were so much fun.  Zelda action was fun too.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I finished it and everything and had a blast, but it was a bit of a shock at first playing something that was obviously geared at the 8 to 10 year old set.

Someone explain to me how you go back to level 1.  Is this for job skills?  What should i be watching out for/avoiding?  I really dont understand what is the complaint here.

It's very simple.

Say your character is a lvl.30 Bard.  You go to the temple where you can job change.  You see a list of all the jobs:

Monk lvl.1
Black Mage lvl.1
White Mage lvl.1
Knight lvl.1
etc...

If you change to them, your level drops to lvl.1 like your HP goes from 900 to 50, your MP from 900 to 50, your atk/magic/def from 500 to 20.  It's the same as if you just started the game and that was your job.

But at any time you can go back to the temple and the list of jobs will say:

Monk lvl.1
Black Mage lvl.1
White Mage lvl.1
Knight lvl.1
Bard lvl.30

So if you pick Bard, you will change to the Bard job and your level will go back to the point it was at before you changed out of it.  You keep certain skills you learned in other jobs such as which equipment you can equip and occasional stat bonuses when you go back to the lvl.30 Bard, but you don't keep any of the spells you learned in any of the other jobs.

So ideally if you want to multiclass you should constantly go from multiple jobs levelling them up equally?  Good to know.

so like, when you're done leveling up your warrior switch to I dunno, paladin and level him up.

sounds hawt but could be very grindy, thus proving the "dq games require too much grinding" idiots right.

in disgaea you grind but you know why grinding in disgaea is fun? because it never feels like a drag! disgaea is the kind of the game where you can go from level 1 to level 1000 in less than 5 minutes,if you know what you are doing... if leveling up all the jobs to something like level 20 doesn't take too much then i don't have any problem with it

Yeah, unfortunately leveling is like DQVI (and I'd guess DQVII?) speed, which is very, very slow unless you are a fan of running around in circles where metal slimes are and hope they appear and hope they don't run away in battle.

In N1 games it's totally cool to drop to level 1 or raise lvl.1 characters because the majority of your stats come from your equipment.  So if you throw lvl.50 equip on a lvl.1 character they'll still be awesome.  In DQ the equipment is like 10-20% of your stats and high level equip on lvl.1 character doesn't mean they can do any damage or take any hits.

DQIX is definitely for the MMO fan.  It's like an MMO that you can solo with AI party members.  It's the FFXI of the DQ series in a way.
I hate FFXI and MMOs because leveling and the games in general is slooow.

Well the game was originally quest based action rpg where you could play online with friends. I've heard these quests are still in the game.

So really, it really WAS based around an online rpg experience to begin with.

Since you don't keep abilities, I wonder that too.  Unless it's like FF3/5 where at a few points in the game, certain job types make things easier.

How much slower is the combat versus the 2D DQ games?

Couldn't I just use the same classes from start to finish to enjoy the game without grinding?

I'm kind of hyped for this, but realize I have absolutely zero time to commit to something like this right now. Maybe in a few weeks.

I don't think I ever even had a spear user :(

I think if you have a guide or wiki and learned all the tricks and what skills are useful, it'd go a long way towards making the job system less offensive (although you'll still have to run in circles and grind metal slimes).  That's the only downpoint of playing imports day 1.  You're all on your own!  Especially when the import thread becomes totally dead after a week on gaf and you're the only one still playing.

My party was a standard Knight (job changed lead into it), Monk, White Mage, Black Mage party.  That reminds me how much I hated the quests at Dharma for each job.  "Go kill 50 enemies with a counter attack and come back and talk to me"  :'(

Did you play VIII?  It's a looot slower than the 2d DQ battles, but it's slightly faster than DQVIII battles.

And yes, you can make your team at the start and go through the entire game and beat it without grinding in about 30 hours.

Here is a quick example of shit you can do with the job/level system.

Learn the "weak spot" attack on spears.
Go hunting for metal slimes / metal bros / metal kings.
Level up a ton, and save all the points.
Change to a new job, e.g. thief.
Invest all the points you saved up into the "treasure" skill line.
Change back to your last job.
Bam, you now have your old job + a full list of thief skills, including speed+40, treasure find, monster check, etc.

Yea I played 8, and I put it down because the battles were horrifically slow. If this is only slightly faster I might not buy it at all.
