I've got a slim PS2 with some swap magic discs on the way.  Should be here in a few days.  I'm playing FFXII again, but the Zodiac Sphere International edition with the english patch.

Who's in?  Lets do this  8)

I'm streaming it while I play/write the screencap walkthrough I'm doing.  If you need any pointers or anything feel free to ask.  If you've played the game before, the screencaps are mainly pots that have good stuff to find, so you know where to get neat stuff early.  Have fun either way!

I might jump in, but I'm not sure I can finish it before Persona 3 Portable is out, which gets priority. I'm going to finish Magna Carta 2 today or tomorrow, so I'll probably start after I'm done with that.

I have a fat PS2, so I use a flip-top case and Swap Magic discs for imports and burned games. Not sure what you need for other PS2 models, but either way you're going to need something that lets you play game ISOs.

As you all know except OMG RED SCARLETT I have 208 hours logged in in vanilla FF12.

Is it worth it to buy Zodiac Version?

Probably no, huh.

Job system, new quests, revamped game balance the works

I'd rather have a translation patch for the Wii game that Bebpo has been playing.

modding a slim PS2 to use swap magic is pretty easy.  You need an earlier version of it, without the built in power supply.  If you take off the top part of the case, there are a 3 spots you put poster tape on--2 sensors and that spring nub part in the disc tray.  I can dig out a tutorial if anyone's interested.   also, the game is pretty cheap on ebay.  and patched versions are on torrent sites, of course.

Wouldn't it be cool if Microsoft bought Square and merged their naming departments?  Imagine the synergy!  Then we could have Microsoft Windows Live Final Fantasy 358/2 Essentials 2012 International Zodiac Job System Home Premium Edition.

I had a flip top swap magic ps2 and used that to install a hdd with HDadvance on it. You should do that, it's pretty fuggen fly. don't need boot discs or anything. Only thing I wish I could dump back to the list of games without a hard restart, other than that it's flawless.

Here's a guide for the ps2 slim.

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2096833&postcount=107

you could also buy a flip top for it.

How is the patch applied?

Unless there's something new and better, a program called PPF-o-Matic applies the patch to the iso pretty easily.

I told himu to tell you "cool" and "hi" when you posted that, guess he never did...

Well, depending on what you liked in the original, you may enjoy the "remixing" of stuff in this one.  The jobs, new stuff in pots/shops and stuff (I dunno what new quests there are, himu is on crack).

I don't think so, no.

I couldn't get past Gilgamesh in the original, but I don't see any new ones when comparing the mob hunt list from the original.

There *is* trial mode, maybe you are thinking of that, since it has a couple new things to fight.  Plus the lv90 mode and lv1 mode..which I am going to try later on.

Would kind of make the job system pointless if you could import a save.  At least you can skip cutscenes right off and do the fast forward mode! go go go

Be sure to post what jobs you use and all that stuff.

I think I'll also start this up as soon as I get back my controller with 4 shoulder buttons. The SC2 beta is still down, none of my 360 stuff is appealing at the moment, I don't get paid until the 16th, and it'll probably be more enjoyable with all of you guys playing it, so I figure now is as good a time as any.

Please do a Nocturne thread for your playthrough.  Love that game, but haven't played it in years.

Gonna be tempting to play Persona 4 and Nocturne over FFXII international when I get my PS2 in.  oh and I'm also getting thoroughly hooked to Demon's Souls.  Have you played that yet, Bulleta?

that's understandable.

there still isn't a turn-based JRPG on current systems that lives up to any of the SMT PS2 games.   Playing FFXIII after sinking that much time into last gen FF games and SMT games would be a pretty sad experience.  I think Resonance of Fate is the best turn based game this gen.  but it's just pretty decent, not mind-blowing.

but goddamn demon's souls is amazing.

I think in her case it's mostly cuz they're too fucking expensive, though I don't speak for Scarlet. lol Can't blame her either. Took me about 2-3 years to get into this gen before I bought a 360 for 300.

Yeah, I haven't had a job in a year+ now, and didn't really see anything I wanted for any of the systems before that.  I still have quite a few things I have yet to play through on my systems that I do have.

I'd post about Nocturne but I've gone through it before so it would be random updates and really boring. :(

? all the current gen systems have comparable stuff? or no way? I'm stupid and can't figure it out.  Help me, demi.  Make me understand.

I'm trying to get the Zodiac Spear right now, but it's being a jerk.  It's the longest taking 1% spawn pot I've ever encountered in the game.

Nah, the only RPGs this gen that have comparable quality to the best PS2 stuff (ie. SMT) is Valkyria Chronicles and Tales of Vesperia. The Last Remnant is great too if you don't mind grinding. Resonance of Fate is also amazing, but that game is purely about gameplay.

And of course Demon's Souls is godlike, but it's structured like an action game with stats. Not a typical RPG.

Yeah, Demon's Souls is akin to the type of "rpg" that Zelda is.  Reflexes play much more of a role than stats.  I'd say it's even more action based than something like the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games which just requires button mashing and basic evasion.

Demon's Souls feels like an oldschool dungeon crawler to me.

My action game comparisons mainly come from the mission structure (20-30 minute levels with a boss at the end, or levels that are just a boss) and the combat. Like how each enemy has their own attack patterns, you can dodge or block them on reaction and then punish accordingly. Take Flamelurker for example, he will attacks fairly aggressively and does big damage (well, everyone does big damage), but all of his moves are dodgeable and you can punish him if you strike at the right time. It's more reminiscent of a Ninja Gaiden boss battle if you ask me. Of course it has a pretty thick RPG side as well, with stats, classes, spells, crafting, etc. It feels like a mashup of the two genres to me.

And now I've made Penelo a Red Mage. Seems like a good all-around class since she gets time magic, green magic, white magic, black magic, AND arcane magic...

fran overall has probably the worst all around stats as she's not the best at anything

I still use her tho

my team: vaan, fran, balthier

i fear that if i got ff12i I would make every character have a unique job and level them accordingly. I would spend 9999 hour with this game.

I *think* Penelo has the highest base magic stat in both versions, but it's like a couple of points.  I really don't see it making a huge difference which character plays like this or that type of character.

According to a chart in the Game Mechanics faq at gamefaqs Ashe edges Panelo consistently until they equalize at lvl 99. Ashe also gets the nod for slightly higher mana pool even at lvl 99. Splitting hairs really but going by the numbers.../shrug
I always used them both anyways. Ashe in cloth with bow as prime healer/debuffer, Panelo in leather with gun as buffer/remedy.
