I'd still trade Wiggins for Love with no hesitation. The goal should be to win now. A big three of LeBron+Irving+Love will get you to the finals. Add in some decent bench players and 3 point specialists and they might even beat the Spurs.

Personally I'd wait to see what you have. You can always trade during the season if that is something you want to do. I'd like to see what the current incarnation of the cavs could do. If that is not enough then pull the trigger then.

Unless another team gets Love before then.  I think both teams should pull the trigger on that deal.

Love + Varejao, what an awful defensive front court  :lol

Should be a pretty gnarly offense though.

Nine teams with cap space were able to make a blind bid to pick up the remaining portion of Boozer's $16.8 million deal with the Chicago Bulls. The Lakers won with a bid of $3.25 million, sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

Love's already a top player, and even if Wiggins becomes one, it's probably not happening until at least his third year.  LeBron's 30 with a ton of mileage, and while he's a genetic freak and apparently a fitness maniac, I don't think they should be erring on the side of patience here.

Acquiring veterans to build a winner around LeBron didn't work out this time, but I think Love's a bit better than Donyell Marshall and Larry Hughes were.

There are of course conflicting reports about whether that Warriors story is true but I'm sure both the Cavs and the Warriors don't want to over-show their hands.

Acquiring veterans to build a winner around LeBron didn't work out this time, but I think Love's a bit better than Donyell Marshall and Larry Hughes were.

To be fair, the 2.0 version of that plan was Antwan Jamison, Mo Williams and Shaq. There was no real other option for the Cavs to realistically add in that time frame. But that team was still a regular season juggernaught, just couldn't defend the 3 in the playoffs.

I do wonder how history might have changed if Boozer didn't stab the Cavs in the back and bolt for Chicago.

The Cleveland Cavaliers made a deal to increase their trade asset flexibility in pursuit of Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star forward Kevin Love, absorbing three non-guaranteed contracts in a trade with the Utah Jazz on Tuesday, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Cavaliers unloaded the guaranteed deal of Carrick Felix – along with a future second-round pick and $1 million – for John Lucas, Malcolm Thomas and Erik Murphy, sources said.

Cleveland has been determined to acquire Love since it signed LeBron James to a free-agent deal.

Those three players can be included in packages as preludes to a Love deal, or in a Love deal itself to give Minnesota salary-cap relief. The Cavaliers hold an interest in keeping Thomas, who could be an inexpensive role player to strengthen their frontcourt depth, sources said.

Cleveland has to be creative in solidifying a deal for Love, who the Timberwolves want to package with Kevin Martin and J.J. Barea, several front-office officials told Yahoo Sports.

Cleveland's discussions with Minnesota have escalated with the Cavaliers' willingness to include No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins in the deal, sources said. Without Wiggins, there's no other combination of Cleveland players and picks that would interest Minnesota. Once Wiggins signs his rookie contract, a trade involving him can't be formally completed for 30 days.

The Denver Nuggets have remained a strong contender for Love, offering a package that sources said has been the most appealing to Minnesota outside of the Cavaliers and a possible Golden State deal including Klay Thompson. So far, the Warriors have kept Thompson out of their offer to Minnesota.

Minnesota wants a package for Love to include Barea, who has $4.5 million left on his expiring deal – and possibly Martin, who has three years and $21 million left. As part of a larger deal, the Cavaliers want to include 2013 No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett and a future No. 1 pick for Love.

The Cavaliers have been offering future first-round picks for an experienced center, league sources said.

Love has demanded a trade before the start of next season, threatening to opt-out of his contract in July 2015 to sign elsewhere as a free agent.

His answer was they wouldn't call offensive fouls on Shaq, so he sold it with flops.

Quote
“Whenever you overdo something, it’s time to stop it,” Divac told NBCSports.com. “So I think it’s a great decision by the NBA. But everyone is saying that’s my rule; that’s not my rule. That’s Shaq’s rule.”

Wait, you think Shaq started it?

“No, I started it because of Shaq, because they didn’t want to call fouls,” Divac said. “So that’s not my rule, that’s Shaq’s rule.”

Enjoy that L Stoney.

The Los Angeles Lakers have offered their head-coaching job to Byron Scott, according to league sources.

Quote
LAS VEGAS -- Carmelo Anthony said it was not the money, but instead his confidence in team president Phil Jackson and his belief that the New York Knicks "aren't that far away from contending for an NBA title," that made him opt to remain in New York instead of signing with the Chicago Bulls.

"I want to win. I don't care about the money," Anthony told ESPN.com. "I believe Phil will do what he has to do to take care of that.

"I don't think we're that far away," he added. "People use 'rebuilding' too loosely."

Tanking isn't the problem. It's a symptom of the limited options to compete for non-major markets.

As a small, backwater community, Philadelphia has to tank and build through the draft.  They can't try to compete in free agency with big, glamorous cities like Cleveland.

Philly is a nice, big city that just has a bad team right now. They have the pieces to be good in the future, IF the health gambles on Nerlens Noel and Embiid work out.

Even "small market" places like Milwaukee did well at one point (Glen Robinson days). I think the issue is moreso about small market teams acquiring and keeping talent, and I continue to believe the best way to do that is to introduce some type of franchise tag

Two Hall of Fame #1 Draft Picks, both of which are persons with the type of character to stay in a small market. Extremely rare case that can't be replicated without extreme luck. You might as well argue for Lebron going to Cleveland as being a sign that smaller markets can compete in Free Agency.

Tanking is the best, nothing but scrubs jacking up shots trying to pad their stats and get a MLE (or greater) contract from a team with horrible ownership and management while prospects languish and do not develop their game. :aah
