It's not like they didn't want him or undervalued his worth. He just didn't want to stay.

I don't know exactly what happened in that last year with San Antonio, but it feels like they could have done more to try to make him happy but didn't think it was worth it.

I hate the Celtics fanbase so I like how upset they are over the team struggling. That includes Bill Simmons.

All the back-biting in Boston this off-season will be delicious.

There will be plenty of hypocrisy to go around. The Bill Simmons types and fanbase will trash kyrie now that he had a disappointing off-season. Even though last season, all I heard was how amazing Kyrie was and how brilliant he was. He was even on the simmons podcast. i guarantee that won't ever happen again.

Normally I side with the player in these situations as most of the fans (and Simmons) are jack-asses but Kyrie was pretty annoying himself on the way out of Cleveland now that he was in a "real sports city".

I saw Barkley was saying that Kyrie should go join LeBron on the Lakers :lol

also, the Lue talks broke down in a wonderful way:
Quote
Negotiations between the Los Angeles Lakers and Tyronn Lue have ended without an agreement to make him the franchise's next head coach, league sources told ESPN.

Lue and his representatives turned down the Lakers' offer Tuesday, league sources said. The Lakers then on Wednesday offered Lue a deal in the range of three years and $18 million, after which Lue's side pulled out of negotiations.

According to the sources, Lue's camp was seeking a five-year deal with a salary commensurate with a championship résumé.

Beyond an inability to agree on contractual terms, the Lakers had proposed several scenarios involving their preferred candidates for assistant coaches, including Jason Kidd, sources said.
The Cavaliers are still paying Lue the $10 million or whatever was on his deal!

I don't understand why they stopped running the offense through harden. It felt like the offense ran more often through cp3 that final quarter. I don't understand playing one way all season and then in the moment it matters most, going away from it.  :doge

You knew Curry was shooting that quarter no matter what and the offense was running through him. Rockets couldn't do the same...

edit: Chris Paul is slow as shit now. He can't beat anybody off the dribble anymore. I mean I get it. I know he's older now. But it was really an eye opener this series/game for his decline from just a couple of years ago.

wasn't that basically what they did last year too, when Ariza was taking all those threes even after it was well past the point of being on the side of the math

that was what Harden's whole game was supposed to be this year, the ugly math for when the space and pace fell apart

lol Stoney called it, this went up at 1AM EST: http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/26702069/kyrie-irving-failed-leadership-tells-story-celtics-failed-season

Quote
Kyrie Irving's failed leadership tells the story of the Celtics' failed season

...

"I knew going in that it was going to be super challenging, but October screamed it," the Celtics coach told ESPN recently. "I knew after the first two exhibition games, it was going to be really, really hard."

It turned out to be harder than he could have imagined. And in the end, it was too difficult to overcome, as Boston suffered a fourth consecutive loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday to crash out of the second round of the playoffs.

This was not what was supposed to happen to a team that made the conference finals the past two years -- and then added a healthy Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward to the mix.

There are plenty of reasons to explain why this season was so hard, and why these Celtics were so disappointing. At the root of all of them, though, is Irving -- and, more specifically, his leadership through words and actions on and off the court.
now i think i'm getting on board with that goofy theory that they realized that Davis was going to be too much of a clusterfuck to come close on and have resigned themselves to help Kyrie go to the Knicks

Yeah you knew these media hit pieces were coming. I don't buy it. Or at least I don't buy pinning the season on kyrie and trying to throw him under the bus for the entire season. They overachieved one season and under-achieved the next especially in a year where the East in general got better. You could easily re-title the article, the failed leadership of Brad Stevens or failed gameplay of Gordon Hayward but that's not where the juice is in a story like this.

All that being said, I think Kyrie ultimately needs another big star to compliment him, and the Celtics couldn't bring that to bear this season. Hayward either hasn't recovered from his injury or has been diminished by his injury. The young guys never stepped up to the new level needed. It was basically a rich man's version of the Lakers this year.

I'm still buzzing/thinking about/distracted by that Rockets-Warriors game last night. I feel that will absolutely be a 30 for 30 in 15 or 20 years. That felt so significant in the moment. The Warriors finally fragile. Steph having a bad game up until that point. The rockets and harden having a good game. And then a really bizarre 4th quarter from the Rockets on both ends of the floor. It was as dramatic a storyline as anything I've seen in a basketball game in a long time. I still don't understand it. Even if Durant is done, I don't have extreme confidence in the Rockets after that game.

As far as the Lakers, this drops my low confidence in them to now even more minuscule levels which is why I didn't want Lebron to go there in the first place. The decision making within the franchise is idiotic and dysfunctional. I was never a big fan of Lue in Cleveland but I had come to terms with his selection and had even started to look on the bright side of at least he will understand how to use Lebron in a system, even though his system isn't remotely ideal. They can't even land that and lowball him in a passive aggressive move by management where nobody seems to be in charge. If they fucking hire Jason Kidd, I'll riot

It's probably been the most competitive series in the playoffs so far. It's been really great to watch.  Dubs/Rockets has been good too, or at least it's been high on drama.

Raptors/76ers has mostly been blowouts in either direction.  :shaq2

I mean I'm not sure what to say. The rockets are probably the 2nd best team in the league again. They played the Warriors for the 2nd year in a row in what essentially was the NBA Finals again. There is no shame in coming up second to the Warriors generally speaking because nobody in this era can beat this stacked team but I mean this was the opportunity and year where they could have and should have. Not taking advantage of the Durant injury is a killer that is gonna haunt this franchise for quite awhile.

Not a huge fan of the vogel thing but I'd be fine with Kyrie on the Lakers. Until this post-season everybody loved Kyrie game. Players have bad post-seasons. It happens. Kawhi would still be my dream choice but I'd be cool with Kyrie as an addition.

I don't think the Anthony Davis thing is happening so I don't even bother to think about it.

I was rooting for the 76ers for selfish reasons but its pretty cool to see the two best teams out of the East play each other.

 :ohyeah

It's basically an annual tradition for the Dubs to suck the soul out of Portland in the playoffs so I'm not hopeful but it would be a nice redemption story if they somehow pulled it off. Could be end up being interesting if Durant is out for a few more weeks.

Lakers moving up from 11th to 4th is pretty great. We should be able to get a good player.

I’d rather not trade for a star when we have a max slot, unless we strike out on everyone good.

People are sleeping on Garland because he went down early in the season but he has all the tools you look for in a modern NBA guard: elite shooting, elite ball handling, good passing ability, can play on and off ball. Of course, Lebron and LA aren't about that development life.

I think I even like him more than Barrett tbh.

Quote from: Zach Lowe
Gentry wore a black tie with silver-gray striping. It was his good-luck charm. David Griffin, New Orleans' new executive vice president of basketball operations, gave it to Gentry. Griffin was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers' front office during a stretch in which the Cavs won three lotteries in four years, from 2011 to 2014. Each time, a man named Jeff Cohen -- a former vice chair for the Cavs and confidant of owner Dan Gilbert -- represented the team in the drawing room.

I began referring to Cohen as a warlock. Gilbert and Cohen had some sort of falling out, and the Cavs have not had him in the room in either of the past two lotteries. (Cleveland owned Brooklyn's pick a year ago.) I half-jokingly said the Cavs had cursed themselves.

And then Gentry revealed the ultimate plot twist: The tie Gentry wore Tuesday was the same one Cohen wore in each of those three lottery wins. Griffin had phoned Cohen and asked for a good-luck charm in the lead-up to the lottery, he told ESPN.com in the aftermath Tuesday. Cohen scoffed at the idea that any trinket could win the favor of the lottery gods. Griffin asked if he might please send the tie. Cohen did. Griffin passed it on to Gentry.

Put Jeff Cohen and his damned tie in the Hall of Fame. Gentry said he is going to frame the tie and the lottery balls, and hang it in the Pelicans' practice facility.

...

Between Griffin, Cohen and Cohen's tie, I'm starting to believe in some real mystical stuff. I'm a little scared. I also worry that in excising all three, the Cavaliers will suffer years of self-inflicted bad luck.
yikes, i hope the NBA is looking into this
