Alex McKechnie was one of North America's most respected athletic trainers and scientists. NBA players pilgrimaged for years to visit him in Vancouver when they had injuries or needed rehab. For example, he's credited with helping save Shaquille O'Neal's prime years by treating O'Neal's abdominal injuries in the late 1990s. O'Neal was so effusive that the Los Angeles Lakers hired the Scottish native, and he was with them for five titles between 1999 and 2011.

But when the NBA lockout hit in 2011, the Lakers allowed numerous staff members' contracts to expire so they didn't have to pay them during the lockout. The richest team in the league then lost its prized trainer when the Raptors, then led by general manager Bryan Colangelo, swooped in and hired McKechnie after the Lakers left him unemployed.

Now, seven years later and with more than 40 years' experience in the field, McKechnie was the point man when the Raptors took on the challenge of caring for Leonard. Providing good care for Leonard and building trust with him was absolutely vital after those bonds eroded in San Antonio.

The Taurean Prince deal is interesting, I thought he was a likely extension candidate after last season, now he's another young player the Nets roped in at a bargain price while making more cap room:
Quote
Nets get: Taurean Prince, 2021 second-round pick

Hawks get: Allen Crabbe, No. 17 pick in 2019, lottery-protected 2020 first-round pick

Massive third quarter for the Raptors. Please keep it going Raps. Don't pull a houston.

just play Ibaka, don't save him, not at this point

benching guys for fouls gives the same effect as if you lose them to fouling out (still mad at Larry Brown 15 years later for this) :doge

redarded explanation
Larry Brown had a rule that if you picked up two fouls before the half you sat until the second half, no matter who you were. The world's stupidest foul rule, it was fine in 2004 when the Pistons had a bench, it didn't work so well the next year when they had to play basically seven guys only.

The New Orleans Pelicans are hiring former UConn and WNBA star Swin Cash for a senior front-office position, league sources told ESPN.

The team will name Cash vice president of basketball operations and team development, sources said. She will scout, help guide player development on and off the floor, and assume other roles within the organization.

This is the latest in a string of major hirings by David Griffin, the Pelicans' new executive president of basketball operations -- and the man charged with handling the Anthony Davis situation. Last month, Griffin hired Aaron Nelson, head of the Phoenix Suns' highly regarded training staff for two decades, as the Pelicans' new vice president of player care and performance. Two weeks later, Griffin hired Trajan Langdon away from the Brooklyn Nets to serve as the Pelicans' new general manager.

Damn. Can't fault Durant. He gave it a go but re-aggravated injury. He could shoot but clearly his movement was compromised. He basically just needed to be a jump shooter this game.

Not a must win now that Durant is officially done for the series but a little disappointing Raptors aren't taking advantage and putting on the choke hold.

I still think the Raps will take it in one of the next two but Warriors did not go down easy.

On a side note I wonder if Durant seriously hurt himself and basically hurt his chances of playing next season to try to play in this game. Unfortunate if that is the case. I would have rather he just sat as a fan.

I know this is gonna be the hot take from every talking head but I never liked the way the Warriors handled this whole KD injury thing. I thought they originally soft pedaled the seriousness of the injury for gamesmanship reasons and then to allow him to come back like this was not a great idea. I didn't just feel that last night. I've been feeling it ever since he got hurt.

I compare it to the ways the Cavs handled injuries to kyrie and love that first year. They announced both players would not be back for the entire playoffs. And that stopped the idea of the player trying to pull a Willis Reed style comeback. The warriors wouldn't do that for whatever reasons and openly teased it since the day after he got injured. People will say Durant wanted to play but that's not solely the player's responsibility. The medical staff has to have the veto in those situations and look out for the player.

respect

I mean guy has a KD tat yeah? Liked how most they showed around were cool and didn't want to see that. The crowd cheering when he went down was dirty, but didn't really see anything bad when the cameras were on or anything.

I feel so bad for KD, that is awful. Kind of sucks as it surprised no one really.

I think odds favor the raps at moment, they have looked the better team most of the series. I wouldn't put money on it though, those last three minutes last night were kind of a dumpster fire. Dubs were committing unforced errors and Toronto didn't put them away. If GSW can run off two wins they will never live it down.   :heh

Warriors should probably just rest Durant for the rest of the playoffs if they can. Send him to his place in New York for rehabbing and relaxing in case they need him in the Finals.

ESPN canvassed the league after Durant's injury, asking front offices if they would still offer the All-Star forward a max contract. The answer from teams was a resounding yes.

Teams that ESPN talked to also confirmed that they would not add injury protections to the final two years of a contract to hedge against a reoccurring injury. Such protections, if proposed, could resemble the contract extension Joel Embiid signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2017.
Well obviously the Knicks don't care, they gave Amare $100 million uninsured. What's $30 million for a way better player.

RE:KD I would take the player option, but if people are actually going to roll the dice on a max you do you. I hope he comes back from it. Before Pels lucked into Zion I figured we'd lose the team to Seattle and KD would end up there in the end as a glorious circle.  :doge

Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving is changing representation and is expected to partner with Roc Nation Sports, league sources told ESPN.

Irving parted ways with longtime agent Jeff Wechsler on Wednesday, clearing the way for him to ultimately work with Jay-Z's Roc Nation prior to the start of NBA free agency on June 30, sources said.

Irving, a six-time All-Star, will become an unrestricted free agent, and league sources say he remains intensely interested in the Brooklyn Nets. The New York Knicks are expected to remain competitive for Irving, too, sources tell ESPN.

The Nets and Knicks have both hoped to sign Irving and Kevin Durant together into max salary slots. Durant's free agency has been complicated by a ruptured right Achilles tendon that will keep him out of the entire 2019-20 season. The Knicks and Nets are both still interested in signing Durant and Irving together, league sources said.

Wechsler had represented Irving since he was the No. 1 overall pick out of Duke in 2011

I hadn't noticed this one during it:
Quote from: Zach Lowe
Hold up: Did Cook use a fake timeout in the fourth quarter of an elimination game in the NBA Finals? "I did," he told me. "I practice that in my mind. Anytime Steve tells me to take [a timeout], I think about doing it." (Cook said Kerr indeed asked for a timeout, and you can see Kerr signaling for one.) "It's an NBA thing. You kinda point at the ref. But when I went to point the ref, Norman Powell cut me off, so I made a move."

I have long advocated that every team should have the fake timeout in its playbook. Cook says Curry does it now and then, but Cook has been a little wary of stepping out of his lane. He also worried this column might put Toronto onto the scent. I don't think so. The fake timeout works.
Sam Cassell and Baron Davis used to have brutal versions of this, they'd dribble cross court slowly towards the bench, Davis would just jet suddenly past everybody while Sam had to be a little more clever about it but dudes fell for it every time with those two it felt like. Best part of the fake timeout is that you can just call one, especially if the coach actually wants one, that was always Baron's bail out. :lol

Klay's up to 24/41 from three in this series, there needs to be some kind of rule against this.
