Inception is a masterpiece. Making a huge film with big ambitions, Christopher Nolan never missteps and manages to create a movie that, at times, feels like a miracle.

Quote from: Cinematical
a stunning achievement and the most completely entertaining film I've seen in years.

Quote from: HitFix
Inception is an exhilarating cinematic experience that suggests there is still room, even in the blockbuster world, for big ideas and dangerous emotions, and that may be the single most thrilling thing about it.

Quote from: Hollywood Reporter
A devilishly complicated, fiendishly enjoyable sci-fi voyage across a dreamscape that is thoroughly compelling.

Quote from: Variety
If movies are shared dreams, then Christopher Nolan is surely one of Hollywood's most inventive dreamers, given the evidence of his commandingly clever Inception.

Quote from: Boxoffice Magazine
A wildly entertaining and dazzling mind-trip not to be missed. Kubrick would have been proud.

I want it to be good. I want a major tentpole film to defy expectations. I want a studio blockbuster to tell me I'm jaded and there's still room for proper storytelling. I want a filmmaker to tell me there is still a reason to struggle; that there are folks inside the system that are willing to make more than toy commercials. I want a great white hope.

I thought it was pretty good, not nearly as ambiguous and impenetrable as the original but a pretty good thriller. And the cinematography was great, all bow to Wally Pfister.

Hey, I love Dante. I think he's criminally underrated, but I always love the unheralded genre greats. Where's the love for Fred Dekker?

... but Nolan is gunning for the crown that everyone handed to M. Night prematurely, that of Speilberg's successor.

I will also chime in for some much needed Wally Pfister love. He has leapfrogged over Bill Pope as my favorite American cinematographer working the studio system nowadays.

Cinematography was beautiful, especially that opening where they're flying to Alaska.  I thought Pacino actually gave a pretty good performance, but Williams was way too hammy and I didn't like Hilary Swank in it at all.  It was a pretty big disappointment.

None of Nolan's movies are emotionally sappy enough to qualify him as Spielberg's successor, unless you're talking purely in terms of box office.  Shyamalan was pretty vocal about trying to be a filmmaker in the Spielberg mode, especially during his publicity tour for Signs, but I don't think they're in the same mold either.

For you, maybe. It was not a bad film, by any stretch of the imagination. Again, if it Insomnia is the worst film of your career, you have had a pretty great career. I'm still skeptical of Inception, but I want to believe. I really, really do.

None of Nolan's movies are emotionally sappy enough to qualify him as Spielberg's successor, unless you're talking purely in terms of box office.

I think we're talking about the best blockbuster filmmaker working within the Hollywood system, which Spielberg certainly was, regardless of his emotionally sappy material. You cannot deny his impact. That title was prematurely handed to M. Night following Unbreakable and Signs, but hopefully Nolan can display the kind of range and consistency that Golden Age Spielberg used to flaunt.

Nolan's films are generally more cerebral than Spielberg.  Compared to Spielberg's supermarket novel storytelling, Nolan's is practically Pynchon.

Willco isn't comparing the type of blockbusters Nolan and Spielberg make. But in the fact Nolan like Spielberg was for a good period of 15+ years making big budget studio blockbusters that both the critics and the masses heralded and made tons of $$$.

Nolan is gunning for that title. It has nothing to do with the type of blockbusters he is making. But that he and Spielberg in the past made blockbusters in the studio system that were both praised for their cinematic quality and their ability to make a ton of money.

Spielberg worked within the studio system to make personal movies/movies that strive to be more than empty popcorn entertainment that made tons and tons of money and were praised as quality films. Nolan is doing the same thing. The movies themselves are VERY different but their place in the hollywood system is very similar.

Shaamamalalan failed to do that.

Off-Topic: The Stephen King novel is largely a piece of garbage, despite its ties to The Dark Tower series (and It!), because it's King-caliber bloat at its worst. It takes a couple of hundred pages or so to get to the fucking point.

Spielberg is pretty shitty today, I kinda doubt he'll ever recovery. He could basically release any sappy piece of shit and still win awards.

Lets see where Nolan's career goes before crowing him. TDK was a great movie, but it's success was boosted by Ledger's death.

Most directors would have loved to have a decade in which they directed Munich, Catch Me If You Can, & Minority Report. He is nowhere near the level he once was and is all over the map but he still every once in a while pops out something solid. I don't think he has completely fallen off the cliff in a way like Robert Zemeckis or Shaamamamallanan have.
