I'm not saying I didn't get both movies, just that they didn't allow me to turn off my brains and enjoy the "thrilling" part. In certain parts, they felt Shayamalanlanesque.

Shutter Island had no crazy mind-fuck twist though. It was obvious from the start. Scorsese himself even said he changed from the book to make the twist more obvious from the get-go because he isn't a fan of out of nowhere twist endings. Memento I can get being shocked by, but Shutter Island, really?

I had problems with the twists the first time I watched The Prestige, but I was drunk/Polish at the time.

The problem I had with the "twist" in The Prestige is that the movie basically was all "WANNA KNOW THAT TWIST?"

Is the story more complicated/confusing than Memento and Shutter Island? If so then: Pass, otherwise I'll watch it.

Neither were overly complicated OR confusing.  ???

Sure, they were pretty straight forward ::)

oh come on jin, why are you looking for films to "turn off" during?  They're not meant for that kind of faux entertainment.  Watch Speed Racer if you want that.

Believe me, I get suckered into watching them. It is by far my least favorite genre.

What genre would you call Shutter Island and Memento?

Despite the problems Shutter Island might have Scorsese still is the only director of that new hollywood movement still doing consistently entertaining movies. Coppola, Lucas, and De Palma have entered into that lololol territory and Spielberg is hit or miss.

David Eidelstein's (a top critic) quote on Revenge of the Sith:
Quote
What a shock when George Lucas finds his footing and the saga once again takes hold.

His quote on Inception:
Quote
I wanted to surrender to this dream; I didn’t want to be out in the cold, alone. But I truly have no idea what so many people are raving about.

and Shutter Island:
Quote
Shutter Island is a long slog. The sad thing is that Scorsese could have connected emotionally with Lehane's narrative.

Yeah, that's what I get from it. There also seems to be a sharp divide, people either really like or find it really boring. Not much middle ground.

I looked at some of the reviewers that really liked Inception and most of them had one thing in common: high praise for Shutter Island.

And, on the other hand, those that disliked Inception were more likely to be negative towards Shutter Island.

Something to think about.

The movie is basically what The Matrix was to Dark City.

Nolan fans are spooging over how original it is as if they didn't see Shutter Island or Total Recall.

Philip K. Dick should get a Harlan Ellison Terminator style credit on it.

Apparently a thriller about a guy who killed his family and thus went insane is  the exact same as a sci-fi film about breaking into peoples dreams. Especially when Nolan pitched Inception to Warner Bros. in 2002 (he said he pitched it to WB when Insomnia first came out) and Shutter Island the novel came out in 2003. The Total Recall thing is just....I can't even try to figure out how his mind is working on that one.

ManaByte's strange hatred of Nolan has always confused me, he seems like the type of director a guy who is obsessed with Lucas/Spielberg/Comic Book/etc blockbusters would normally be obsessed with.
