Best DS Roguelike?
« on: July 06, 2010, 07:54:14 AM »
That's not Etrian Odyssey. Yes, I know it's a not a rogue-like, but it's got the risk/reward thing all going on. Felt like one.

People play roguelikes that aren't *nix geeks? Last roguelike I played was nethack.

Shiren is supposed to be good if you're into roguelikes (I'm not).

EDIT: uh... wait a second!
I always hate these games. The SNES one, and the fifty bazillion DS iterations. They just dont click with me.

Actually- The Dragon Quest spinoff one was okay.

Shiren doesn't have Pokemon in it, though.

i don't understand why you hate the game!
the interface is ultra simple so no... can't be an interface problem
does the game looks ugly? well it's not a looker but it's definitely better than having a @ representing your character so no... it's not a graphic problem
you might hate roguelike but then you wouldn't have made this thread so it's not that

what the heck is your problem ???

The Dark Spire

at least izuna and pokemon mystery dungeon are playable >:(
not to mention the dark spire is more akin to a dungeon crawler like etrian odyssey than a roguelike

well if he plays dark spire he will definitely feel only the risk!
if he wants a dungeon crawler he should get strange journey and be done with it
or maybe he can get a psp and play class of heroes
or he could wait for etrian odyssey 3 which gets released in september
or he could import 7th dragon if he's fluent in moon language/motivated enough to bother with wiki's
or he could get a psx and play azure dreams a game that does pokemon roguelike a lot better than pokemon mysterious dungeon

:bow Shiren :bow2 I can't continue my playthrough until I get my new AceKard, but what I played of it was great. I'm gonna buy a legit copy whenever I get around to it.  :heartbeat magus

Azure Dreams fucking rules.

What I really like is like. Trying and failing, but being able to come back stronger so that you can get through the first levels easier. Shiren sends you back to Square One too often. I hate it. It's too easy to lose EVERYTHING. Let me keep some stats or something.

Anyway, Magus is my favorite poster. I think he actually likes video games whereas the rest of us are just looking for cheap thrills. Thanks for the suggestion, dude, don't take me too seriously.

ah don't worry,i don't take anyone seriously
anyway there are some roguelike that let you keep your stuff (izuna and chocobo mysterious dungeon let you keep your level for example) and to be fair at first i tought losing all your stuff was a terrible thing too but then i realized that the whole game can be finished in like 30 minute's so losing everything is not such a huge drama,if anything it keeps subsequent try more fresh since you'll never end up steamrolling everything

oh also you do get to keep some stuff, there are some sidequest that will give you a partner (in fact there are 3 different partners) and after you finish those sidequest you get to keep that partner even if you die altough at that point they start to roam the dungeon randomly and you have to find them again

I heard Magus' favorite roguelike is Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.
:(

Does Shiren get harder early in the game? I played it for like 15-20 mins and it was extremely easy and boring. Izuna was way more difficult at the beginning.

iirc there's a short (but maybe more than 15-20 mins) tutorial section before you get to the real game. it gets interesting fairly quickly, I think.

what floor did you reach beezy? if you played up to floor 5 of course you are going to find the game easy! try to get at least to tabletop mountain or the swamp
anyway

this is just an intro that you get if you leave the snes version idle enough but if you ask me it really shows what's so awesome about the game! shiren 3 was so disappointing,i don't know how the heck they were able to screw it up! i wonder if they didn't screw up shiren 4 but i guess we will never know :-\
