Wii party
« on: July 08, 2010, 05:09:58 PM »
so the japanese version came out today and apparently it's somewhat translated (it's quite funny/sad when you think that nintendo refuse to bring game like project zero or zangeki yet as soon as they get a "wii something" they start to get their shit done ASAP) so i decided to give it a spin...

so the game has several gameplay mode, the first one is called party island and it's pretty much your standard board game, you throw dice's and depending where you land stuff happens (arrow space either sends you forward or backward, ufo space's force you to switch your board position with another player...)  at the start of each round a minigame is played (there are around 40 of them) and depending how you fare in the minigame you get an extra bonus dice (the better you fare, the better the dice) some spot of the island force you to get a high roll or else you get sent back (i guess they didn't want one player to win too quickly in case of lucky rolls) and the first player who gets on the top of the island and roll a 6 wins

the second mode is called world trip and it's much more close to mario party,in this mode the game picks three world country (for example canada, usa and mexico) your objective is then to reach those countries so you can get a souvenir of that place, each game last 10 turns and the player with the most souvenir at the end wins the game (if the players get to all three countries before the end, three new countries get selected),like in party island before each turn a minigame is played, unlike in party island winning the minigame gives you money which you then use to buy items to aid in your travels (like airplane tickets or helicopter which give you a higher movement range) and the aforementioned souvenirs and uh... that's it

the third mode is called mii shuffle or something like that, each players get 2 row of mii's and they have to swap mii between the one they have and a batch randomly selected so that the two rows only have mii of a single color,a minigame is played at the start of each round to decide who picks first and since the batch usualy include a jolly mii which is considered as every color the player who wins the minigame is usualy at the biggest advantage

the fourth mode,i have no idea what's it's called but it's basicaly the wheel of fortune with minigame's each player spins a wheel and depending on where the arrow lands the jackpot get increased, when the arrow lands on a minigame space, the player who wins the minigame gets the jackpot, this is a really boring mode since you spend most of the time spinning the wheel

the fifth mode is bingo! that's right! bingo! but with mii! sometimes a minigame ball get drawed and the player who wins the minigame gets to decide what's the next number (pardon! mii!) drawed but other than that... it's... bingo... you know... the game for old people's... oh how far the mighty have fallen! :(

the sixth mode is a collection of games for two players, there is a love test of sort and a mode where the two player have to balance mii on a ships (before placing the mii,you get to play a minigame which of course dictate's how hard is to balance the mii, these minigame only have two players and are different from the standard batch) there's also a very boring throw-away mii matching game

the seventh mode is called "nintendo lost it's fucking marbles!" and it's a collection of minigame that involve your living room! and when they say that, they mean "we are trying to aim even lower than we did with wii music" these include awesome game such as "hide the wiimote somewhere in your house" and "pick cards i declare from a card deck" and i'm talking about like a real card deck! in fact the game even says you need one before playing

the last mode lets you play game alone, there is a puzzle mode where you have to place mii's so that they end up watering flowers and another one where you have to guide mii's to their house

there is also another mode that's multiplayer only,it's just the minigames but the gimmick is that one of the player gets picked randomly and become a snitch who gets an unfair advantage at the minigames (like in a point game, the target that have a bigger value spawn next to him) the catch is that nobody knows who's the snitch and after each minigame each player has to guess,if they guess correctly they steal point from the snitch,if they don't,the snitch get point from them
i think this might be the only clever idea in this mess of a game!

the minigame themself are really simple, most of them don't include any sort of waggling and are played either by aiming at the screen, with the old NES setup or with the mario kart wheel setup, all of them are somewhat boring,i forgot to add that there are also 3 vs 1 game but there are only 5 of them and they are rarely used so they mostly a throwaway

so,after all this long winded explanation what do i think?
well it feels like a cheap version of mario party which simply had more stuff, more boards, more minigames and of course NO FREAKIN BINGO!
i hope this bomb so we might finaly get a proper mario party 9 with online pla... oh who i'm kidding :-\

Mario Party was pretty sweet, you can always choose to play one of the 8 they made for GC. I really like WarioWare on Wii and think the motion stuff made it a lot better than the GC WW, so I'd most likely really like this... Mario Party on GC was awesome, so many good times playin that game.

I wonder how handled development for this one. Was it an internal team or did Nintendo farm it out like they do with Mario Party?

Nd Cube and EAD.
