Original Gameboy Carts

Are they finally a dead legacy?  One can assume with the success of the DS (the 'third leg' so to speak) and the upcoming launch of the 3DS that the original Gameboy and Gameboy Advance lines are dead.

So what is the best machine to play original Gameboy carts on?  I've got a GBA Clamshell, they stick out there but it doesn't bother me.  I don't think the screen is perfect for GB games though, seems like they run in a window. 

Also, what are the must-have Gameboy games in your collection?

The best option is the AGS-101 model of the SP (the backlit "brighter" screen)

Thanks for the recommendation.  Am I wrong that the screen is cropped on the SP models?  Or it doesn't have the largest screen available?

I'll take clarity over size but it would be nice if there was a model with both.

It doesnt have all recommendations but its a good start. IMO the original gameboy doesnt have much going for it.

I'm pretty sure nothing is cropped on the SP. You can stretch the screen with a button I think, but otherwise its native.

Yeah I've got the shitty SP.  There were only a handful of carts I was interested in but I'll definitely check out some of the recommendations in that thread.

Is the good SP also the best way to play GBA games?

Um... it could be, but I'd prefer a DS Lite or a DSi over the SP on account of the more room for your hands (the L and R on an SP are super tiny).

Good call, I could never reliably hit the bumpers with my sp and gorilla hands.

That's what the screen issue was, the gba games on my DSL, that screen is cropped a bit if I remember correctly.

What slime said.  I have a Game Boy Player myself, it's the only way to play these games.

The Game Boy Micro is pretty sweet for playing GBA games with maximum portability; the screen is backlit too. Although these days I usually play GB/GBA games on my PSP.

If you have a flashcart, Lameboy is a very good GB/GBC emulator.

I use it with my DS Lite, giving me:

- DS
- GBA
- GB/GBC

Was tidying up my cupboard a week ago and found a shit load of old gameboy shit. I don't know about you guys, but theres something just immensely cool about the see through game boy pocket. Even found my first ever copy of Pokemon red.

yeah, if you don't care about portability, the gameboy player on the gamecube is the best option.  Only thing I dislike about it is not owning one of those hori snes style gamecube pads.

I really like the Game Boy Micro but I think a lot of people have problems with the screen size.  The d-pad and face buttons are incredibly comfortable on it and it is a built solid.

I might have to look into a flashcart for the time being, mine is acting up now (had an R4 but I'm not sure what the good card is today.)

I saw used GBA SP 101s on Amazon for about $40, will definitely look into a gamecube adapter as well for the collection.  Is the Gamecube Gameboy Player better than the one that came out for SNES?

The GB Micro doesn't play Gameboy or Gameboy Color games, so at least you don't need to worry about a cart sticking out! that is one big reason that the GBA SP back-lit is probably the best option.  GB/GBC carts still stick out, but at least it plays them and offers a reasonably sized screen.

Gameboy Player on gamecube is better if only because it can play GBA games.  Plus if you have the Gamecube to GBA cable, you can use the GBA or GBA SP as the controller (I'm pretty sure).

also, if you're getting it used, the gameboy player includes both the hardware that plugs into the bottom of the Gamecube and the software on a disc.

Heh I didn't realize the Gameboy Player played GBA games.  Damn, I'm missing out big time!

edit:  I've actually got one of those cables, loved to play Pacman Vs back in the day.  That's a great tip about the controller.  'Connectivity'
