KOREA-BORE (and anyone else who has been to Seoul)
« on: July 13, 2010, 12:51:58 AM »
I'm going to be partying and bullshitting in Seoul in early August for exactly 1 week. Suggestions? Good bars? Restaurants? Touristy shit? Shopping? STARCRAFT/GUNBOUND/MAPLESTORY/WHATEVER DENS? Attractions? Things to avoid? Things you would absolutely recommend doing? Definitely going to Lotte World, but that's about all we have planned. My girlfriend has spent a lot of time in Korea too so she's going to plan some things as well, but I also want the opinion of the EXPATzzz  :-*. I'm also down to meet up and slam soju, drop me a PM if you're interested kkkkkkkkk.

Boo, I'll be in NYC from 8/1-8/9. When are you here?

Avoid Itaewon like the PLAGUE. Unless you like douchebag frat boys who outnumber Korean people 10:1.

Go to Hongdae- It's young, hip and cheap. Bar Da makes an apocalyptic and wonderful Long Island Iced Tea. FF is a cool dance club. Ting Tings isn't bad. The rest of the clubs tend to be really expensive, shitty versions of Euro/American clubs.

Right next to Hongdae is an area called Hapjeong that's pretty cool. There's a bar there called Bau-haus that has dogs you can pet and play with. There's also a bar that looks like a European cathedral on the outside and a Bavarian drinking hall on the inside. Kinda pricey, but nice to see?

Lotte World rules. BobFromPikesCreek & I went two weeks ago. Go to Seoul Tower at night if the weather is clear. It's really pretty. Avoid the restaurants there, although the Italian place at the bottom isn't too pricey. If you wanna do shopping I have 3 suggestions:

Insadong, near City Hall, for cheap touristy stuff. Insadong is also home to the COOLEST TEA CAFE EVER. It's decorated like a train and then the rest of the restaurant is like a mini village. It's hard to explain. Apujyeong if you wanna see the 5th Avenue of Korea (They have a ROLLS ROYCE DEALERSHIP ffs). Gangnam if you want something in the middle. Although, most major areas have some kind of big market space for shopping, although some are way more modern than others.

Look for a traditional market somewhere. Namdaemun is kind of neat, but touristy and not that traditional anymore. You may have to poke your nose a little ways outside of Seoul to find one.

I'd avoid the museums. They tend to have little to no English in them and always feel kind of anemic to me.

Food-wise: Look for a chicken galbi chain called "Yogane". It's the fucking jam- Order the cheese stuffed dukboki. There's a restaurant in Gangnam called STAR CHEF that's seriously amazing- Korean food with a French high-culinary twist. Kind of pricey (Entrees start around 20-30$), but the portions are fucking enormous.

Most of the traveling/tour-y stuff I've done has been outside Seoul, so I'm kind of helpless here. Just eat whatever you see on the street, drink weird shit from the c-stores and have fun.

Are you going to stay in Seoul the whole time? A good friend of mine has taught English on Jeju island for the last two years, and her pictures look incredible.

Yeah, staying in Seoul the whole time. I guess we might make some day trips out or whatever, but our hotel is booked for 7 nights.

When I was there I did some pretty touristy stuff.  Went to the DMZ... went to some temples, and an old palace that Japan burned down and Korea rebuilt kinda--sawr some show there.

The DMZ was kind of scary though as the tour guide we had was just telling us all about tourists being shot, killed or maimed as we're driving around to the different places.  Maybe he was trolling.  But ok, I don't know if I want to go anymore, but we're on the way so... you win, Mr. Tour Guide.

I ate at a KFC there once and found it to be a lot better than the American version--my god.

Other than that I just got drunk in weird out of the way bars with tacky neon signs that just said HOF and places I don't even remember the name of.  I was there with friends who grew up there and recently had moved back for a bit.

Taxis are cheap too, and the subway is the way to go when it's running!  Gotta learn how to use that.

Will likely not hit the DMZ, but drunkenness is definitely in order. Lots of friends to show me around for that. And I've heard crazy horror stories about KFC in Korea (Kentucky Fried... rats?!), so I will be sure to avoid that. I don't even eat KFC in Tokyo though so I don't know why I would randomly decide to hit it up in Seoul.

Yo GilloD, will $1000 USD be enough for a week in Seoul? More? Less? How is the USD-Won exchange rate in terms of shit I can buy?

It's going about $1 to 1,200 won at the moment. That's a pretty nice exchange rate if you're going USD to won.

I'm in Gwangju but I think $1,000 is plenty for just a week in Seoul.
