We won't be here in 2013.  come before 2012.

and it depends on how many stops you wanna make. just driving, 5000 is more than enough.

The trip will probably take between three and four days, depending on how often you stop along the way. You could always stretch it out even longer, if you wanted.

Sometimes I feel Kerouackian and feel like this is a great idea, but in reality there's nothing to do in the midwest. About the only way it would be fun is the latter half, where you are driving past Vegas and/or Phoenix

I thought that highway didn't exist--that it's like some mythical northwest passage-type manifest destiny shit.  You're just going to run into bandits and be killed.

Actually I only remember it from a television commercial that ends with "get your kicks, on route 66."  What that is a television commercial for I can't remember.

Eh?

Its a video of Desert bus.
I can't see it so I just threw something out there :p

Small American towns are only uncomfortable for people who aren't used to small towns.  They just have a different culture than big cities and some people think that makes them rude and shit.

protip: most people in big cities are nice to you because they're trying to sell you something.  people in small towns really don't have shit to sell you and don't rely on your business (except tourist attractions like in the pictures above) so they're not going to be overly friendly.

$8-$10 per person per meal
$50-$80 per night at a motel, depending on whether you want somewhere nice or not
$30-$50 per day for gas

Plus whatever extra you spend on souvenirs or at various attractions along the way.

That should give you a rough idea of what it'll cost you.

Define not nice.

Well, if you want:

-Fresh, clean rooms
-Free breakfast
-Nice looking building
-Amenities in the room
-Free internet
-Swimming pool
-And so on

It'll cost you more towards $100 a night.

If you're willing to settle for:

-Dingy rooms that smell of smoke
-Amenities that are limited to a bed and a working bathroom
-A building that's old and shows it
-A pool that has no water in it
-Clientèle that includes druggies

You can probably get away with $40-$50 a night.

It just depends on what you can stand.

i've done a fair amount of US driving.  I personally love it.  Every few months I make a 12 hour drive to New Mexico straight through to my house out there and with either my wife or my best friend it's awesome.  We drive to Tennesee too.  Drove to Colorado a while back.

Don't listen to people.  It will all be new to you and you'll have your wife.  It will be fun, dude.

Stop at local food places for barbecue and other small town food that will simply blow your mind.  And stop at tons of stupid attractions.  It's fun.  the worlds largest fiberglass fish.  The worlds largest milk bottle.  the worlds largest ball of twine.  the building made out of corn (corn palace).  I'm not saying you'll specifically run into those.  But shit like that is littered across US highways.  It's awesome.  Oh and the US tons of small state parks and museums and scenic routes and shit.  Stopping at state welcome centers is cool.  It's usually like a small museum about the state.  Pick up some pamphlets for random facts and cheap souvenirs to take home.  Have fun, dude.

I'd settle with the 2nd option even. I just wouldn't want to sleep in a motel with crack dealers next room, ugh.

It's a possibility if you settle for the second option, but there are motels that exist in between those two. The best thing to do is have a plan before you start driving, check up on towns along the way and see what they have to offer in terms of motels. Even call a few of them to ask about rooms and rates.

Borys, if you have your route mapped out, I highly recommend using Hotwire. You can find three star and four star hotels for around $60 (sometimes less) in a lot of places. That's how I kept my accommodations affordable without worrying about roaches, crime, etc.

Great Rumbler's template is not a bad one, but gas is the killer. I would also make sure you have AAA or some kind of road-side assistance (I guess that's included with a car rental?).

This was what I drove the past month, approximately 3,000 miles:

And I spent about $1,000 and most of my expenses were paid for - including all of my gas and hotel up the Northeast.

Route 66 does not go through Nevada, so you'd have to go off course to visit Vegas.

I'm serious, Route 101 is awesome, and much more scenic as it follows along the Pacific Ocean in California, Oregon and Washington.

Ugh, we stayed at Best Western in Paris and thanks but no thanks. Worst of the Big Name hotels for me. But the price sounds great.

If you book with Hotwire and get a three star or better hotel, it's with one of the chains - like Marriott, Choice, etc. All of 'em are solid.

Amex isn't accepted everywhere due to higher service fees compared to Visa and Mastercard. We try to use ours as much as possible to rack up airline miles, but it's best to have a backup option.

You can pick up a car in one place and drop it off somewhere else. I think it costs a little more, though.

You might be able to do this depending on the rental agency, but it could cost more.

So, my question is this.  With everyone making road trips, has anyone thought to set up some sort of Bore pushpin map?  Like, putting pins on peoples' cities so that other members can stop in and say hey?  I for one love to meet people from the internets.  I think it would be cool to have something like this set up, so when making travel plans you could look at it and think "Hey, I could stop in and see so and so".

Why not drive from Boston to NY to Chicago, and then fly to Vegas and drive to San Diego or something.
