Yeah, I started playing this today.  Got about an hour in and wasn't feeling it so played SRW & Contra instead.  Will try again later.

So yeah, the best part of Last Ranker is that instead of field themes, the game is about battle themes.  There's like an entire cd worth of battle music.  As you face higher enemies you get battle music that is more awesome, important characters all have their own music, and certain types of enemies each have unique battle themes.

It's something I'd like to see done more in rpgs.  I'm willing to sacrifice a cd of field music to get a cd of 20+ battle themes considering that 75% of rpg time is spent in battle.

Some sound like Persona 3, some sound like One Winged Angel, some sound like KH battle music

There's a little of everything.

And yes, the battle system is not the most exciting.  It's not a bad battle system, but once you make a good strategy you can basically just do the same 5 attacks in the same order every fight and win.

Luckily they keep the game very short with not a whole lot of battles because I think they realize their battle system just doesn't have enough meat on it.  I'm ~14 hours and I think I'll definitely beat it with everything done in 20 hours.

I'd recommend it to people who own psps and like jrpgs.  But it's a B game through and through imo.

dunno, I don't notice battle voices in any rpg until somebody points out the characters have been shouting like crazy for the last 500 battles straight that I just did.  At some point I just started ignoring all battle talk.  It helps that it's in moon language.  Much easier to ignore.

so how do they make a battle system work when you control only one character?
also why they ripped the menu from persona 3?

It works because you only fight one enemy most of the game and the fights are like 1-2 mins long.  The enemy has to follow the same battle system rules as you.  It's sort of like a fighting game.

Just finished it.  It's a nice little "my first rpg".  The music is darn good at spots, and it's enjoyable.  Wouldn't buy a PSP for it, but if you have one and want a new rpg it's worth playing.  Apparently Capcom made Niinou tone down the difficulty into casual rpg instead of Etrian Odyssey rpg because they thought no one would be able to beat it.  Capcom is laaaame.
