After giving up coffee a while back, it has slowly made it's way back into my life. I NEED that first cup in the morning.

I don't "get" coffee. Someone asks me if I want some every morning at work  :-\

I'd imagine there's good coffee and bad, generic/American coffee like anything else, but I can't say I'm interested in testing out the waters. It all stains your teeth and makes your breath smell  :yuck

Living in Europe I usually get my coffee from a quaint little local shop that grinds their own stuff. Totally pimp grade coffee. 8)

Coffee can be delicious but I've noticed that Americans in particular are cunts who always ruin the coffee no matter what.

Like I'll order a great cup of joe at this one place, and it tastes DELICIOUS black. I always give a sip taste to see if it's good black. But most people I know instantly dump sugar and cream into it without giving it a taste test.

Even after you've already made it clear that you don't want any?

I guess it's just them being nice. Like this one chick always makes the coffee then comes to the front office and asks everyone if they want some; I'm usually in the front office so naturally she asks me.

I pretty much only drink long blacks, flat whites sometimes. I live in Wellington, pretty wanky about coffee here. Probably got more roasteries in this little city than the entire US. Starbucks is only big here in the corporate sector (3 on 1 street, only 2 anywhere else in the city). Once you get hooked on real coffee.... :lol Starbucks  :-X

Using an espresso machine you pack these little handles with coffee real tight and run boiling water through them extracting the goodness. A flat white is made with a shot in the bottom and you pour heated, slightly frothed milk on top and you can make little patterns too. Long blacks are just a short cup of hot water with the shot extracted on top leaving the brown cremer on the top like my above pic.

From an ex-Starbucks barista:  What Starbucks brews normally tastes like shit.  I don't know what the hell they're doing to it, but it tastes awful.  What Starbucks sells on THEIR shelves isn't too bad if you need a fix and can't get to your local roaster.  What Starbucks sells on supermarket shelves is pure shit.

Bottom line, try to go to a local roaster.  They have the freshest, best tasting shit, usually.  I've never really got into long black's myself.  I usually don't drink flat whites because they're just not my thing.  What I love the most is a good pressed coffee from an African region like Kenya or Ethiopia.  Drip will suffice if I don't have time for press or my wife is drinking with me.  She doesn't like press.

Is Europe still big on instant coffee over there?

Italians invented the espresso machine so I guess it depends where you go. I've never worked at starbucks but I worked for 3 years as a barista with local roasts, every machine I've used has been Italian I believe. I went to some pretty decent coffee houses in Holland years ago too.

I used to drink it all day at work, but I've weened myself down to 1 cup a day. None on weekends. These older guys here drink it all day and then wonder why they have hyper tension issues.

Yah, one cup in the morning Mon-Fri at work for me, I don't want to be dependent on it.

I thought Stumptown was the nickname for Portland? Then again, I learned this from comic books (like everything else in my head).

I <3 coffee but I never drink more than 2 cups a day. I'm pretty sensitive to it. I grind my own locally roasted beans, and have an espresso maker for espresso, cappucinos and iced coffee drinks. Some people get a bit too worked up about the details but I think it's pretty easy to achieve at least Starbucks quality at home with minimal effort and expenditure. I can't bring myself to spend $4 for a black coffee too often as a result.

yeah, stumptown is a Portland shop.  Folks in Portland won't drink it because it isn't any longer "local" because they moved out of state, but they're fucking idiots.

It's actually infuriating that Stumptown felt the need to set up shop in New York City. Isn't the Pacific Northwest good enough for you guys SMH  ::)

This was my favorite place to go in Louisville.  When I worked EMS up there, my partner and I would go and hang out there for hours.  Such a cool place.  No strangers and everyone was laid back.  [None of the people in the photos are me, BTW.]

I've only started drinking coffee in the last few months, makes waking up soo much easier.  I guess I love caffeine more than anything.

Caffeine is heavenly, but I'd rank a good beer over good coffee any day.

When I was in college for a semester I had an 8o'clock class and I'd stop by a place to get coffee, and across the street there was a guy in a suit who'd pull up at the convenience store and buy two tall boys.  every morning.

The guy who was the psychologist at the middle school before me used to dissappear every day around 9am and show up again around noon. Apparently he'd go to some bar and drink nonstop.
