Not wanting steam isn't that strange. It is one of those things where if you're into it, it consistently rewards you. Take steamworks as drm. If I'm a steam user and still want the Fallout New Vegas collectors edition, I can go out and buy that package and still have most of the benefits that come with a digitally distributed game. In addition to linking the game to your steam account, you get achievements, friends list integration, auto-updates, etc. But if you're not into steam, it means that you need to install a program and keep it open while you play that game. I'd imagine it is similar to my problem of buying an apple device and getting stuck with using itunes trash.
