Online dating is a good start for people who are shy/nervous on dates and asking girls out... but I've found after hundreds (yes, hundreds) of dates, and then being set up with my current g/f via a close friend, there's nothing quite like meeting a girl in a more 'organic' way. But if you're just starting, it doesn't hurt to talk to a few people, go on a few dates, get used to it.

The problems with online dating:

-misrepresentation - everything from their personality (girl could seem like an interesting and intelligent person from her emails, but when you meet in person the chemistry isn't there), to looks (online dating is the refuge for the FATTIES)
-lots of girls don't take online dating seriously... a decent-looking girl gets hundreds of emails a day. If you manage to get a date from one of them, they'll just see you as another poor sop who will buy them drinks, or dinner, or just get them out of the house for the evening
-expect a LOT of flakes
-and quite a few girls, who just broke up with their b/fs... like to go online, get tons of emails, as a bit of an ego boost. Attractive females are of course in short supply on the dating sites, but they ARE there.
-lots of Jesus freaks, or other social misfits/weirdos

Your best bets with online dating:

-tall chicks - a lot of taller girls go on because it's hard for them to meet men their own height (and it seems a lot of guys prefer their girls to be shorter than them). If you don't let a girl who's taller than you intimidate you, you can clean up in this area. I'm a bit less than 5'10" and have dated quite a few 6' girls via online
-chubby girls with cute faces - if you can get over the chubby part of it... but even these girls are in high demand on the online circuit
-teachers - lots of teachers on the online circuit... they work with mostly women so they can't meet through work, and quite a number of teachers tend to fit into the whole homebody archetype
-play the Numbers game - send emails/winks/etc out to whoever you think looks decent... this is a good way to get a lot of dates

If I'm reading that first chart right, men's preference for shorter girls is actually more pronounced than women's preference for taller men? (or maybe they just figure short women have lower self-esteem and are more vulnerable). I also realized that I haven't bothered to update my income stat since I first joined the site a few years ago, and I'm making over twice as much as I was then. Somehow I still don't feel like updating it though, in fact I might just remove it altogether instead! Take that, global industrial capitalism!

Just seems like it leads nowhere. You talk to someone for a day, things move to one word responses, you realize you don't want to meet her, the end.

having never online dated, I am under the assumption that it would be better to cut the shit totally and IRL meet ASAP? am I imagining wrong? may be bias, but it seems like online dating peps are a bit desperate by default. suggesting quick meetups should lead to easy gains, yes?
