This offseason is pretty dull, I'm surprised at the overall lack of activity, especially with how many decent players are still available, both UFAs and players supposedly up for trade.

Canucks fan here, love the moves Gillis has made so far, even if Ballard's salary is a bit high.

No true team allegiance here.  Yes, I'm a filthy ronin.

Most partial to the Pens, and have been long before they got Crosby and stopped sucking, so I'm not some champion-chasing bandwagoner.

Leafs die-hard here. Was into my 20's before I even started following, so the cup drought really doesn't feel all that long to me.

The 1920s?

Burke sucks. After two years, he's re-tooled the Leafs into a team that might fight for ninth place again.

Discuss.

What sport is the Heat from?

Are they a team for one of those lame sports where you can barely touch an opposing player without drawing some sort of penalty, where you can't completely lay out your opponent in a clash of bodies, leaving him lying as paste on the ice, and upon which a good ol' fistfight is looked at with shock, rather than punished by giving the combatants a nice five-minute break from the action?

Nobody drops panties quicker than competitive hockey players up here.

Shame I didn't quite have the skill to even make a rep team more than for one year.  :'(

My youthful optimism tells me that we will need to wait and see. Properly retooling the team will take time, so I'm not actually expecting much out of this year's results anyways. The Kessel move made me cringe a bit, but I'll just have to hope he pans out. I think Burke's restocking of young talent has been pretty good considering, going after all the college guys that have shown a bit of talent, and for me personally, the team that started the year last season was a much poorer squad than what they finished the season off with.

They're a long way off from anything I'd call great, but it's safe to say there are more changes to come. I don't kid myself that they'll win a cup anytime soon, but I'm hopeful that in 2-3 years we'll have an entertaining and competitive team again.

So yeah, keeping my expectations low.

If retooling is going to take so much time, the Leafs should've just rebuilt through the draft, like the Pens or Hawks or Caps. (If Seguin turns into a franchise player. . . .).

You're right: the Leafs have picked up a few decent young UFA's. Bozak looked really good centering the first line, Gustavsson was solid during the second-half, and now Mueller looks like a good pick up.

People have made alot out of Burke's supposed independance from MLSE, Petty, etc. but personally I'm sure he was pressured to make any possible quick changes that could improve the team short term. From what little I've heard of them, I don't think MLSE would ever actually stand for/allow for doing things the proper (longer) way if avoidable.

Hastily typed as I have to run out the door here.

Although I'm sure he was pressured, it's not as if Burke is a patient man himself.

I know this is hindsight, but the Leafs haven't made it to the playoffs since 2004. At minimum, it will be seven years between playoff appearances. Quick fixes haven't worked. The Leafs should have tried a proper rebuild a long time ago.

Agreed. I truly doubt we'll ever see one with the current ownership group unfortunately. They'll just keep patching the boat as they row, and after last season any improvement (i.e. not second-last) will be trumpeted as "positive progress moving forward", I'm sure.

And we'll be stuck with business as usual because the teacher's pension plan won't ever sell (the Leafs really do print money).

What did you think of the Kovalchuk deal?

I agree with the NHL: the contract was clearly an attempt to circumvent the CBA. It wasn't the first such contract (see: Hossa's and Savard's contracts), but it was the most obvious attempt.

I see a bit of a parallel  with general anti-avoidance tax rules. Such laws don't catch everyone who avoids taxes; just the ones who are the most transparent.
