Obama doesn't have a magic wand. He can't make Ben Nelson disappear or clone Al Franken 59 times. In order to get things done he has to compromise, deal, and cuddle with assholes.

My problem is with him caving on battles that could be won, and acting like the president holds no power outside of deciding what American citizen to assassinate overseas today. He didn't fight for the public option, he didn't fight for tougher financial regulation, etc; seems like the next thing is to not fight to nominate Elizabeth Warren to head the new consumer financial protection agency. As if he doesn't have the power to recess appoint her, or any of the tons of nominees who have been obstructed by the GOP for months.

Obama could very well be a one-term president.  He'll be a more skilled politician than his opponent, and demographic trends will keep pushing the US more Democratic, slowly, but a terrible economy trumps all that.

Meanwhile, I'm about ready to become a Facebook fan of Obama now that all the libruls are reverting to emo navel-gazing and I can't be accused of chasing a fad.

It wasn't that he was black, it was like, he was going to pull another WE'RE GOING TO THE MOON out of his ass or something. Some kind of big, galvanizing idea to change our country and unite us all. But, yeah, that didn't happen.

In fact, he killed the return to the moon program  :'(

He's getting re-elected because his likely opponents are either

A) a Mormon used car salesman
B) an Arkansas Jesus Freak that used to eat fried squirrels
C) that crazy bitch from Alaska
D) that boring dude from Minnesota

and all of them are gonna have to go full distinguished mentally-challenged fellow to get their party's nomnomnom in 2012.  Seriously, Jimmy Carter could beat those fuckwits.  Plus, after the Teatards start actually trying to govern once they're elected to a majority in the House, America will be all uh, no thanks dudes.  Y'all fuckers are crazy.

The GOP was right.  This is what happens when you let the unemployed stay on welfare - they start getting a sense of entitlement.

Why didn't McCain win? :(

It all depends on whether the economy works out or not.  If it is a double dip recession like some may think, his ass is grass.  It would almost be worth it for the Democrats for him to step aside and let Hillary try to run in 2012 if that is the case.

Either way, Obama shaped up to be a disappointing president.  When push comes to shove Obama is always a day late and a dollar short.  He just kind of waffles around and never really stands up for the majority of the Democrats - usually opting to take the DINO position that Ben Nelson or Joe Lieberman likes to take.  I think it is because he is looking out for himself to make him appear to be a post partisan leader when all it is really doing is creating further uncertainty in those crucial moments.  I don't feel the need to defend him if his plan is just kind of waffle around and this is Obama with a virtual supermajority.  I don't think he'll ever improve.

I think most of it is the economy.  It's still in the shitter and the self proclaimed "summer of recovery" isn't shaping up to be anything.

Where is the terrorism, financial collapse, and other nonsense that happened when George W. Fucking Monkey Bush's time as President brought? Do you actually need your government to bring excitement? How about just keeping the country in check for a few years?

Obama is the half-assed President.

Half-assed health care reform. Half-assed financial regulation. Half-assed response to oil spill. Half-assed investigations into alleged racist comments by employees. etc.

Fucking nailed it.  That's my big problem with Obama.  He seems to have very little actual convictions.  He never stands his ground on ANYthing.

You are fucking stupid, Ichirou.
There is so much corruption, back-stabbing and back-slapping behind the scenes that it's a wonder that Obama has been able to do as much as he has done. It's not that Obama lacks conviction, it's just that there is so much internal opposition to some of his ideas.

There is no need for name-calling.

Obama is in many ways complicit in the corruption.  He hired people like Tim Geithner, who is a fairly big scumbag.
When is there a need for name-calling? You seem pretty good at it in other threads --- why is it inappropriate here?

I'm not trying to incite you, I just want to know if you're being internally consistent.

On the same note, a week ago I was at the social security office helping my brother get his card. We were with like 20 people in a waiting room, and CNN was on the tv. I forgot what story was on, but a guy behind us blirted out "doesn't Obama make you miss Bush?" and nearly everyone either said "no" or groaned audibly.  :lol

Guess the W Bush History Revision Project isn't going too well for republicans

Wrong, there's no viable republicans stepping up.  Pandering to the Tea Party is going to scare away all the Independents.

What I hated about 2008 is that voters assumed too much.  I was okay with voting for Obama as a centrist who can make moderate improvements but unless you magically got rid of the Senate, any major policy change would never happen.

It can't be 10% because Obama said that wouldn't happen if we passed the stimulus bill. And why would he lie. ???

In 2008, I voted for Obama because he was the most viable democratic nominee (my first choice was Biden) and 2010 looks the same, since "conservatives" have just gotten crazier since 2008.

My problems with politics is really just with the Senate though.  I mean, maybe you could say that Obama wasn't what you expected but with the Senate the way it is, who cares?  It's not like a white guy with a long, connected political history and no real skeletons in his closet (like Biden!) would've totally turned the country around.
