Where Street Without Joy is the definitive book about the war in Vietnam and a warning to future foreign aggressors?

Or else the book about Afghanistan that everyone is reading that isn't The Kite Runner?

Rory Stewart - The Places in Between

Some guy wisely walked across Afghanistan a few months after the start of the war in 2002 and wrote a book about it. Haven't read it, but it's supposed to be good.

You could read "The Clash of Fundamentalisms" by Tariq Ali, although this is more about Pakistan.
