Applefags help!
« on: July 29, 2010, 04:19:04 PM »
So I just bought the latest Macbook Pro ( Awesome device, loving it so far ), the problem is I've just downloaded Skype and Opera and for whatever reason I can't run em. Skype is not recognized and Opera has error-199 whatever that is.

I also tried to run windows messenger but it referred to it as a windows program and refused to run it  :lol

Help?

I was going to say that, but I assumed he did, so instead I posted about how awesome xcode is.

Yes because you don't need skype or opera.  All you need is xcode to hold you tight at night.

xcode is the apple IDE.

I kind of need it since my friends use it exclusively.

What's IDE? ( I'm expecting tons of laughs at my expense for his )

Didn't you say you were going into computer engineering?

Pretty much my dads choice, I'm a fast learner though but that isn't what this thread is about.

So how do I get these bitches to run?

jesus wept, even i figured this stuff out in seconds after 15 years of being PC-exclusive.

You may need to watch out for 64bit compatibility for some of those but I've had no trouble with anything you mentioned. I use a Firefox plug-in for MSN (the awesome Yoono)

Poor Wrath. :(

I guess if you're weaned on Windows it's natural to think the worst when something isn't working.

Be sure to change to compsci when you decide that computer engineering sucks.

CompSci and Software Engineering/Network Engineering are almost one and the same imo except Comp Sci you do anything you want within the different computing disciplines giving you a more varied degree. This can be bad and good (in terms of jobs, engineering degrees so long as they're IEEE approved almost always give you priority). Currently I'm taking all software engineering papers as all the compsci papers have changed to either SWEN/NWEN/ELEN or CSEN but they still contribute to my Comp Sci degree.

I'd recommend as a beginner get the BlueJ IDE for your new mac and learn some java, don't bother with XCode. BlueJ has built in compilers and a class diagram page and doesn't do code completion so it's a good way to learn the basics. You should also pirate :bow TextMate :bow2 for your Mac if you want to do any web stuff.

ummm XCode has built in compilers and a UML generator as well and supports java.  But who would want to use stinky ass Java anyways.

And I took computer engineering to be more a long the lines of electrical engineering with a focus on computer systems.

The other big adjustment is that PCs run on hate, but Macs require luuuuuv.

Um beginners? People with no history in programming who can benefit from the solid libraries and documentation? There's a host of things that are still great about Java. But yes I'm not a big fan, I just thought it might be a good starting point.

Ruby is probably a rather good starting point too, and you can read one of the funnier programming 'textbooks' in order to learn it http://mislav.uniqpath.com/poignant-guide/

meh, It's like my mamma always said "You'd best start with C boy or you ain't gonna get shit for Christmas".

But I guess Wrath is a Muslim so I guess starting with Java or Ruby wouldn't be such a big deal.

C teaches you the wrong way to program these days (did you mean C++). OO or bust.

C teaches you the fundamentals better than any other highlevel language.  It turns boys into memory managing men!

Agreed but some can't be bothered with such tasks (pointers: cool with them but ugh)

Ya I don't like to be bothered with such tasks either, but I think it's best to learn them early so that you always remember what is really going on under the higher level languages.

I learnt on high level languages, and I study with people who learnt on C. I found grasping the concepts of OOP easy, others who didn't learn in an OOP environment found it harder whereas when I had to learn C I found it no problem. Apart from the memory management and pointer arithmetic there wasn't much new to learn (except how much better modern languages are). But yes it is good nonetheless to have those foundations. Any degree in engineering/compsci will go over C and even assembly (we had too) at some point, why beat yourself over the head with a language that's been superseded by many other superior languages when you don't have to? If I was into electronics/embedded programming I might spend more time with C but imo it's pointless today, it has it's place in history though.
