Nippon Ichi admits they can't make games; shifts focus to violence towards women

The genre for Nippon Ichi and Image Epoch's new PSP title is "RPG Where You Punish Girls." While the new game has 2D sprite visuals and an overhead view, the subject matter seems to be leaning a bit toward the adult side.

Details on the all new Criminal Girls have leaked out from this week's Dengeki PlayStation (thanks for the heads-up, Yuan!). In this unique RPG, you assume the role of guardian to young female criminals who've ended up in hell. You'll need to reform these girls as you lead them to the top of a tower and eventually back into the living world.

How you go about reforming the girls is where the "punish" part of the genre comes into play. You'll apparently be able to physically punish the girls. Screens in the magazine show the option for spanking, for instance. Some of these punishments require the game to use mosaics so that you don't see certain areas.

In an interview, the staff said that the punishment component is a central element to the game. They believe the game's CERO rating won't be too harsh, as all you're doing is punishing the girls.

Outside of the punishment system, the game will also have a battle system of some form. Details will be shared on this system in a future update.

5pb. has announced KimokawaE!, a new game for the DS where you have to discipline girls from the underworld so as to help them adapt to life in the human world. And they will carry out various actions and if they do it right, you can pet them on the head, but if they do it wrong, you have to spank them.

The girls from the underworld include cerberus, a ghoul, the god of poverty, and an angel.

There will also be various fun mini-games which you have to complete in order to help these girls adapt to life in the human world. Such as having to bathe the god of poverty and clean her body in such a way that she feels really good so she will learn to like taking baths.

The game will be released on the 25th of December and would make a great christmas present for the kids!

Also the description for cerberus says she likes pissing on lamp posts in public and you have to discipline her well or she’ll be really dirty.

I couldn’t stop laughing as I wrote this post.

I think most of the anime airs after midnight and normal people don't visit Akihabara/fetish stores, so it's actually easier than you might think for a Japanese person to be "unaware" how creepy their subcultures get.

i dunno, seems like some broad over generalizations.  I mean, they have banned games before.  They have censorship in place so that otakus aren't looking at straight up kiddy porn.  And the country is kind of known for looking down on people who stray from their culture's norms. 

It's not so straight forward in the U.S., either.  It's not just conservative and religious types who would find it strange that grown men play games with scantily clad 10 year olds.  I think any normal group of friends would find that extremely strange and you certainly wouldn't be winning points with the ladies...

Straight up. You'll go into a store to check out their used games on 3F, and then as you pass through 2F you realize that it is a collection of horrors that needed firebombed yesterday.

Is Den-Den Town devoid of this? I don't really remember anything like that back in 1999-2000.

Den-den was definitely better last time I was there.  I honestly don't remember more than 1 porn store on the main drag and it looked pretty tame.

That said I guess I'm just desensitized to fucked up shit at this point.  Akihabara is weird, but it doesn't really bother me and running through all the stores looking for awesome hidden loot is still super fun to me.  The questionable stuff you walk through is just ^^; and move on.  I don't really care what people get their jollies off on.  The western gore/death websites bothers me more than any loli cartoon shit Japan draws.

In 2001, Akihabara was a gamer's paradise; in 2005, there were a fair number of porn shops, but you could still ignore them, roll your eyes and walk past. But in 2009, a trip to Akihabara feels like being cast as an unwilling extra in Urotsukidōji. It's all maid cafes and explicit doujin soft and it's being advertised directly on the sidewalk. I honestly never want to go back there again.

I agree that Aki has had a fall from grace and sucks in terms of shopping now.  That's my main problem with it.  Back in 2001 there were so many games stores competing and games everywhere.  It was awesome!  But now there's only the major chains and one or two hole in the wall stores and the hole in the wall stores have gone from game goods to "other" goods.  It's a lot harder to find good deals anymore.

There are a whole bunch of retro shops all around the country with some seriously amazing stock but a majority of them require some traveling to get to which is unfeasible for a regular trip.

So, SO true. The best retro game store I've ever seen in my life is in the middle-of-nowhere off some highway in rural Gunma-ken. It was pretty much a Super Potato the size of a Sam's Club, with gashapon trading and retro toys to boot. Unfortunately, I'll never get back that way in a million years.

I'm not an expert in Japanese culture... but I'm guessing it has to do with the demographic issues Japan is facing. Less children being born, means less children buying games, means a shrinking game industry and with that, the industry's focus toward more sales-reliable niche products (like h-games, realdolls, moe, etc).

So it looks like he's not only directing some games and producing others, but also coming up with original ideas to be developed by other teams within the company? I could be totally off, but I think Densha Otoko had a lot to do with empowering the otaku -- it told 'em to be proud of their freakish hobby and embrace it, which just opened the door for things to get a lot creepier
