Google Wave left to die
« on: August 05, 2010, 10:17:33 PM »
I don't know about you guys but I've recently started using Wave a bit for group projects and have found it's actually pretty good for that. Then I found out yesterday Google are discontinuing support for the project at the end of 2010 with it being left as open source software for anyone to pick up. The project was open to the public for a total of ~80 days, seems like a pretty short amount of time to keep a project of this scale alive.

when they say drop support, will it still be accessible as is just not developed further, or will the plug be fully pulled? (apart from the open-source thing)

also, what's a Google Wave?

According to Wikipedia:
Google Wave is an "overhyped disappointment for the first generation of users"[16] with "dismal usability"[17] that "humans may not be able to comprehend".

But despite these wins, and numerous loyal fans, Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects. The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began. In addition, we will work on tools so that users can easily “liberate” their content from Wave.

Wave’s innovations, like <.> character-by-character live typing

My grandad told me stories about doing that by candlelight on ICQ with a mechanical typewriter.

So it was basically a way to create and run something like a group network/intranet with bells and whistles but on google's cloud? (I'm still curious what it's purported function was and trying to put it in real words, that's the best I've come up with)

I had the beta version.  Played around with it once or twice and never touched it again.

I think it would have made for a great group project tool but not much else.
