Eiji Aonuma says Zelda is same old same old
« on: August 13, 2010, 03:59:40 PM »
From latest nintendo power interview with aonuma about skyward zelda...

Quote
The demo area was a field, not part of a dungeon

Oh really Nintendo, you had me there!

Quote
Elements of dungeons and fields are being combined

This is the only good news imo.

Quote
Some dungeons may feature areas where you have to run from enemies, or you don't have a weapon

Oh no god,  the stealth sucked in WW

Quote
There may be more items than the 8 seen in at E3

Maybe more then 8 items? wow this game is so awesome...

Quote
Gorons and Zoras are mentioned in passing, but not confirmed for the game

Zzz seriously, we dont need to recycle the same races over and over.

Quote
MotionPlus may lead to new puzzle types

More boxes to push! Now with motion+

Quote
The sword has a treasure-seeking ability
so it is like hot and cold game

Quote
Link does have a method of travel between the two worlds, but that's not being discusses yet

Nooooo I am sick of these kinds of implementations.

I like same old. As long as same old doesn't mean inane sidequests that plague recent Zeldas.

The Zelda games have been the same since the NES games. The perspective is the only thing that has changed.

I still love the franchise, though.

Every franchise is the same thing since it started with new features mounted on top. Such complaints are stupid unless we're talking about Final Fantasy which changes it up every fucking game.

Zelda games come out every 3-5 years. Who gives a fuck if it's the same shit. And each Zelda game has differentiated themselves from the next one to the point that saying they're all the same is completely mindless.

In any case, this interview was pointless because Aonuma is not revealing ANYthing new in it.

Wait till the next trailer, which is hopefully a story trailer.

Not really. Zelda TP is basically Zelda OOT 1.5
And TWW is also the usual shit. Except the tedious water world.

Nintendo needs to make more Zelda games like Majora's Mask.  Now that was completely different.

Wind Waker's sailing made it feel different, I thought. Now you can make the case for TP, but TP is really the only thing that's feels derivative and canned and yet it still has some of the best dungeons in the series, so that point ends up being moot.

Majora's Mask was completely different, yes. But that doesn't mean that the other Zelda's are the same thing either. Wind Waker places an emphasis on sidequests and exploration more so than dungeons. TP is all about dungeons. Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past have similar to stories, but their gameplay and how they fuse these story elements into the gameplay are completely different. Link's Awakening has the entire map as one big puzzle to solve. The original game is one big dungeon and it doesn't tell shit on where to go or what to do. Zelda 2 is a fucking side-scroller.

Zelda games share similarities, but not one Zelda plays the same as the next.

umm yes himu, most rpg play the same but we accept that because they bother with other stuff like characters, the world around, the plot, the dungeons, the loot, the various subsytem

zelda does none of this, they slap the same shit over and they are done with it

Oh, totally forgot about Zelda 2. I loved that game.

Nintendo should just try something else with Zelda. And motion controls won't change much, me thinks. From what I've seen, SS looks like the previous Zelda games.
I just got tired of the "enter dungeoun, find key and kill boss"- concept since TP. That's why I couldn't finish it.  Stopped at the Sky Temple.
And Zelda games never have a good story. So once you get tired of the gameplay, there's nothing else to go back to.

Yes zelda 2 and Majoras mask are like the only zeldas who TRY to do something totally new in the series and I give props to that. Why did Miyamoto run his mouth and say that TP will be the last Zelda in its form when Skyward sword does not seem to do anything groundbreaking or even close to it! Nintendo was once the masters in creativity with their franchises (remember when miyamoto disapproved Super Mario Bros 2 because it looked too similar to SMB or when Yoshis island got an overhaul so it wouldnt play as SMW?) seems like they're stuck in a loop, atleast with Zelda.

uhhh

they haven't shown anything about zelda ss lol except a demo area

I mean, you could say do the same thing with majora's mask. Show off a dungeon at E3 and it's just classic zelda gameplay. This doesn't go into the story or the flow or structure or sidequests.

So basically you have no argument. When we have SS in our hands and it's the same thing as Twilight Princess, I'll eat crow.

I always wonder why people hate on zelda games for being zelda games.  It's like bitching that mario games are about jumping in bright colorful levels. Or that mario games have recurring elements like 1-ups or flight powerups or whatever. All franchises have their staples.  The BIG problem I have with zelda games these days is an overemphasis on story, which I think ruins alot of what made the early zeldas  so engrossing.   Link's awakening had a cool story but it was never more exposition then the owl giving you a ominous observation here and there.

jesus man, they showed off the demo of the game with the actual game-mechanics. Did WW or TP play differently from their demos? Nope.

sooner or later people will get tired off the same type of combat, weapons and dungeon item kills boss etc. Atleast in the Final Fantasy series, each game has a different type of battle system. Zelda is the exact combat we seen for ages.

Dude, the demo was a general area to show off the controls. There were no puzzles or puzzle design at all. It was a random field with boss fights included to show off how combat and some new items worked.

Meh, there's no Zelda that deviates that drastically from the formula, aside from Zelda 2 (if you even want to count that as a Zelda).

I really would like to know what people have in mind for a significantly 'different' Zelda. I'd argue even something like MM isn't that unique. MM's prime disguishing feature is that it doesn't have Ganon/Zelda, but the gameplay is what you see in every 3D Zelda. The Oracle games are near carbon copies of Link's Awakening.

Dumb thread.

different dungeons with different treasure, twilight princess had that frozen castle where you found that giant iron ball and it was really cool! i want an entire game like that instead of suffering for the XXX time the forest dungeon/fire dungeon/water dungeon trifecta nor do i want to see any hookshot, boomerang or any other item which has been done to the death

the reason i'm here is that it just boogles my mind about what makes zelda so popular... the puzzles? too dumb! the combat? nah! the music? it barely has any other than the main theme (which i always found grating on my ears)

I just happen to enjoy how they play compared to other similar franchises–it's one of the few Nintendo staples that I can honestly say hasn't once been successfully emulated on any other platform.  I don't know man, I'm tired and don't feel like describing why.  I love the games, whatever

for the most part i'd take console zelda over handheld zelda any day

spirit tracks sucks

didnt you just say that you play and love every zelda game? Spirits Tracks is also zelda. Contradiction much.
It would be better if we just pretended that the DS Zeldas didn't exist, just like the shitty CD-I games.

Dumb thread.

the hell are you talking about?  MM is different because a large part of the game revolves around the townspeople/journal, and the element of time.

for zelda to be interesting to me again, i want them to move away from the shit they've been recycling for over a decade. there is no reason to use the same items over and over again. it's especially pathetic when the majority of your items are from previous games.  also i don't think it'd hurt to try changing up the overworld.  stop having large empty areas that require some mode of transportation to traverse, and maybe make a smaller but denser overworld.  and ffs get rid of the shitty item menu pause screen that's been bogging down the series since forever.  it wouldn't hurt to add some challenge either but this IS nintendo so there's no fucking way that's gonna happen.

That's nice, but having a focus on side quests/mini games, staples of Zelda to begin with, doesn't make it that radically different.

Uh, Zelda games don't have focus on sidequests. In Majora's Mask sidequests IS the game content. Not so much in other Zelda's.

I didn't say they focus on side quests. I said MM focuses on side quests, which is fine, but does that make it significantly different than other Zeldas?
