2010: retrospective and looking forward
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:28:41 PM »
Since we are just past halfway through the year it would be cool to recap what great software has been released so far, and discuss what we're looking forward to later in year.

Best games of 2010/GOTY contenders (for me):
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
Bayonetta
Castlevania HD

Upcoming games I hope will make the above list:
Dead Rising 2
Vanquish

great year of games so far, comment and discussion pls

It's been a pretty good year for games.

My top 10 so far, off the top of my head:

1. Super Street Fighter 4
2. Bayonetta
3. Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra*
4. Death Smiles
5. BlazBlue: Continuum Shift
6. NIER
7. Resonance of Fate
8. Mass Effect 2
9. Yakuza 3
10. Espgaluda II Black Label
- honorable mention to Deadly Premonition

*Only managed to play five or six hours of this before my 360 died. Really need to play more. :'(

For the rest of the year, the only games I'm really looking forward to are Valkyria Chronicles 2, Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu 1.5, and Vanquish. I'm sure they'll all be pretty amazing. Probably going to buy Halo as well, but I don't see that making my top 10. Dead Rising 2 I'll probably skip. All of my friends are casuals who only play Halo, CoD, sports games, etc. so I can't be bothered finding someone to play through the story with in co-op. Will wait for the GotY edition of Fallout NV so I don't have to waste money on the inevitable DLC scam. Very interested in Metroid Other M as well, but I don't have high hopes for it. The new Team Ninja has yet to prove themselves. And I think that's just about everything that could be good.

Is there a list of all games released in 2010 so far? I have a terrible memory

for upcoming games I don't know what is still this year.

Fallout New Vegas
Vanquish
Civ 5
Mafia 2
YS 7 (next week!) and Ys Oath PSP

edit:

favorite game this year so far is Mario Galaxy 2.  I know that much.  Don't like to list these things out, but Mass Effect 2 is between number 1 and the rest.

Forgot about Sin & Punishment 2 since I played it last year. Yeah that game is pretty amazing. Certainly one of the best games Treasure has ever made, if not the best. Best game on the Wii too.

Persona 3 Portable would be one of my favorites easily, but it kinda feels like cheating since this is the third time they released it. But then again three of my favorite games this year are ports of games that are several years old so whatevs.

I'll toss in my disappointments of the year.

FF13
Splinter Cell Conviction
Dragon Age Awakening

Probably Alpha Protocol also but I haven't really played enough of it to say something like that fairly.

I think my only real disappointment for this year has been Yakuza 3. It's still a great game, but my expectations were way too high after playing Yakuza 1 and 2. Yakuza 4 looks like it gets the series back in high gear at least.

Actually, my biggest disappointment for this entire generation was when Itagaki revealed he is making a multiplayer FPS/TPS/whatever. Fucking hell.

No More Heroes 2 is pretty good so far, and I haven't opened SP2 yet.

What I played of RDR today has been amazing.

Gay Tony + TLAD double pack was solid.

Disappointment of the year: FF13 by a long shot.

There are a couple of games from this year that I haven't played but I want to get back to.

Darksiders, Bayonetta (I actually tried this one and liked it but I had to send it back to gamefly because some big game at the time was coming out.), and Singularity. ( I played through at least an hour of singularity but once again I got sidetracked by some other game)

Looking forward to playing Civ 5, GT5, Starcraft 2 and Vanquish...

Possible GOTY contenders

ME2
Limbo
RDR
SMG2

I'm loving what little I've seen of Vanquish and Civ 5 though.. Betting they'll top the other stuff. Haven't played BFBC2 yet either which I'm keen to grab once I've got more time for games again.

Third is improving his troll-fu, I see.

Something to add to my looking forward to list: Comic Jumper! Cant wait for that game, looks hella fun.

I am looking forward to the new 3d Castlevania too. The art looks cool, and I really hope it intergrates the Metriodvania style exploration gameplay in it's 3d setting (as Metriod Prime has done excellently, and also Batman AA to a lesser extent).

I'll be very disappointed if its just a super linear God of War rip-off. It needs to have it's own special touches that say "this is Castlevania".

Far and away the best so far have been RDR and SSF4.

Looking forward to DR 2, Civ 5, RB3, and Fallout NV.

DQ9 I have but haven't played because I'm still chipping away at DQ4.  :-[

Want to get SC2 at some point, and will get FFXIV day one...but my hopes are pretty low.

Ghost Trick is kind of cool, but like the weaker parts of Phoenix, there's a lot of trial & error and rewatching things play out until you get it right.  I bailed after a few chapters.  This guy has good gameplay concepts and fun characters, but he needs to make his games less boring.

Isn't Dead Rising 2 coming out at the end of the month?

I think the only big thing working against Dead Rising 2 is that the Capcom games worked on by western devs have had problem.

yeah, Bionic Commando was awesome, so was Rearmed (I'll add that Rearmed 2 is a game I'm looking forward to whenever it comes out).  Still didn't seem all the way done, had a multiplayer mode that no one touched, and bombed hard.  Then there was Dark Void.

Anyone that mentioned Heavy Rain should automatically be fucking dismissed for being bat shit insane.  Boggles my mind how anyone could've enjoyed that.  The game had one memorable scene - the one where you cut off your finger - after that it's just a mish mash of QTE garbage.

Of what I've played so far this year, the clear winner in my mind is Mass Effect 2 followed by RDR.  ME2 is balls out amazing. Still haven't touched Starcraft 2 though.
