Guitar Hero controller
« on: August 16, 2010, 09:40:38 AM »
My GH3 controller is pretty unresponsive on its green and blue buttons. I'm going to try and repair it, but have no idea what to do, so I'm going to start with this guy's guide:

Have any of you tried it? Anything I should beware while attempting this, or additional advice?

I disconnected the neck, cleaned the contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol, found that the contact plates are worn in spots.  :maf

I haven't played guitar often until now, so I've go no idea how it can be worn out. I used a folded piece of paper underneath the neck to change where the contact points connect to the pins, and that has fixed it. I also borrowed a set of Torx drivers with the T8 and T10 sizes, so I may also go ahead and move the PCB further forward on the neck, which is another recommended fix.

Now that I'm trying to learn these new songs, meet some of the gold/platinum/diamond Challenges for additional in-game unlocks, I'm more frustrated that GH3 has such a cheap build quality. Then again, one of the buttons is off on my Rock Band guitar, so it's not like Harmonix has the higher ground.

My Torx set had 2.5mm and 3mm, but the T10 is a size between those two. I borrowed a Torx kit from the IT guys today and then used this guide:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=628006

Worked like a charm; I guess I'm a hair worried about moving the PCB 2mm closer to the pins, bending the pins, whatever... but I was going to toss the controller if it didn't work, so I guess I've evaded creating landfill (and in Japan, you even pay for the right to put something IN the landfill), so I am pleased.

I am back to playing guitar poorly, but now I can only blame myself for my missed notes.  :P
