Got my copy. Some quick impressions from the first hour of play:

- First town area seems larger than what's usually seen in Ys.
- Both Adol & Dogi move lightning quick. The jump button has been replaced by a dash/roll which makes traveling even quicker.
- Can quickly fast forward through dialogue and cutscenes by hold down O
- Music is good as always. Not as good as Felghana's so far but comparable to VI's
- Cloth map is huge. Was quite impressed by its size.
- 4 difficulty modes are unlocked from the start (easy, normal, hard, nightmare)
- Loading times are practically non existant (running off UMD). No shitty konami port here.
- Combat rocks! More like Felghana's than VI's (a good thing). Seems like there's going to be a good amount of special moves to get too.
- On top of a good combat system there is a weapon synthesis system where you mine loot drops from enemies to build your items (enemies drop about 3 - 6 items per kill)
- You can slash enemy carcass's for more loot!

If there's one game worth spending your Euro currency on, it's Ys Seven.

Ys has been coming to America since the days of MS-DOS :P But yeah, no excuse to pirate it... bought my LE copy legally today, but want to play this on the big screen via component out, so I'm holding off playing till I get back home.

mmm... i'm not feeling it,combat is ultra button mashy, there is no cool shit to find (sure the monster drop loot and you can synthetize new weapon with it but it takes LOTS of loot and the improvement are marginal) and the only dungeon i played suffered from hallway syndrome

it really feels more like a lame-o version of diablo than something like alundra

for anyone else playing this, holding down R and pressing L right as you get attack does an instant/flash guard and makes your next attack a critical.  At least past the second boss the game doesn't mention it and it helps a lot.

Started playing this.  Just did the first hour and got past the first boss.  Good times.  Wasn't sure how I'd feel about the "control everyone!" gameplay concept but it seems pulled off really well.

Love how far you jump forward when dashing.  Makes moving through towns a breeze.

and as always Ys music is so good.

yeah, the multiple characters and the type you should use on the current enemy is done really well.  It's easy enough to tell just from the design of the enemy, but it still had yellow or blue numbers pop out letting you know if it is super effective or not at all.

If you're past the first boss, I think you might have missed it already.  I'm pretty sure the 7th quest can be missed if you don't do it early on; my guess is that it relates to the guy in the back room of the bar.  And just to mention it again (because the game doesn't), holding R and pressing L at the right time does your guard.  Not that useful with ordinary enemies, but really helps against bosses.

Is there a quick travel between areas?  I'm only in the forest at the start, but it would be annoying if you have to traverse the whole overworld to go back and forth between towns/cities/villages

Do the bosses stop feeling like endurance grinds at some point?  I played Oath in Felghana so long ago I can't remember if they were like this, but the first few bosses in Ys Seven just feel like endurance matches.  It just feels like you do so little damage outside your one big L button attack you get off once per fight.

Otherwise I'm digging the game, but while I like the patterns, the boss fights are kinda bugging me with their grindiness.

Bosses telegraph their attacks big time.  They're probably the only times in the game when it is beneficial to guard and counter attack.  Pulling it off successfully gives you a bunch of points to use your skills plus makes every hit do critical damage for a brief time.

Oh, guarding fills your meter and makes you do criticals?

Yeah, that'd probably make these fights go faster.  I've just been dodge rolling all the patterns and doing HOLD X -> release to build up meter and spamming skills.

Just beat it.

This was a darn fine game.  Good dungeons, some awesome bosses, good synth/loot system.  A++ music like always.  Great graphics/art, especially in those last 5 sanctums.  Even the story didn't bother me cause I just went tap*tap*tap through it and it felt like an old-school 16bit storyline, which just led you from one dungeon to the next.

The final boss was INTENSE.  I screwed up bad on the 2nd part because it hit so hard with the flame hands so I used ALL MY ITEMS and beat it with 1 char alive and like 10hp.  So I started the Adol form with no items ^^;  After a try or two I thought it was still possible to do even without items, so I kept retrying and getting the patterns down and then I BEAT HIS ASS OH YEAH.  It was one of those "adol has 100hp, the boss has 1000hp, CAN YOU DO IT" endings and I did it and it faded to black and sooo good.

Took me about 16-17 hours total.  I skipped all the sidequests outside the titano hunts and didn't bother talking to npcs really since who cares about the story, I just wanted to slash things.  Just went from one dungeon to the next to the next and thought it was paced pretty well.

Only complaint is that outside of the first few bosses and the last boss the game isn't that super challenging Ys that forces you to learn and dodge boss patterns.

Top 5 arpg materal here imo.  1.  Ys Oath, 2. Zelda LttP, 3. KH BBS, 4. Zelda OoT 5. Ys Seven,

I'm close to 25 hours in and I'm still not done.  I did do the side quests (except for the one you can skip because of bad design) and went after the best equipment but I'm skipping the story for the most part.

I'm actually hoping to finish it up tomorrow to start kingdom hearts or spider-man shattered dimensions ds.

I'm definitely looking forward to Oath based on what people say.  Hope the PSP version is solid because it sounds like everyone played it on PC.

Since Ys' Seven controls great on psp, I think as long as the framerate is solid Oath will be just as amazing on psp as it was on pc.  I still haven't heard if the psp version is 30fps or 60fps.  Would be nice if it's 60fps, though probably still fine if it's 30fps.

It's basically like seven but with less story stuff and since you don't have party members and skills to learn it's far more balanced.  It's basically the DMC3 for arpgs.  Tons of boss fights and every one is intense, but well designed, forcing you to learn patterns and dodge them.

Finished.  In total with side quests and all that it was 26 to 27 hours.  I think it's a bit long for an action rpg like this, but whatever.  Awesome game and so far my favorite handheld game this year (more than Peace Walker, have yet to play Kingdom Hearts, can't remember if I played anything worthwhile on the DS).

FUCK why are they making me use the shitty characters I never use! the entire game you at least have Adol.  Then I'm supposed to use characters that I haven't used in like 20 hours.  When you finally use Adol again it just the feeling of so much power.  You go from getting destroyed to murdering the shit out of this baddie.

haha, yeah the first part was the worst for me because I never used Dogi since the Hammer guy/chick had Damage Dealt x 1.25+ as her support which was way better.  Using Dogi as the fighter was so sloooow.  The green haired kid is alright but he was too weak to be the primary fighter for that battle.

The 2nd fight wasn't bad besides me playing really dumb and not noticing the hands crashing down on me was doing like 1000+ damage each time.  I used Geis a lot as my main when Adol was using a not-sword, so my Geis was a pretty good attacker.

So what's the best party?

Currently using Adol (can't be removed anyway), Geis and Mishera. I might replace Mishera with Aisha or her guardian but still, not quite sure.

I think what I hate most about this game is the insane amount of money grinding, all these characters require new weapons for 40k, 50k...etc for that one new skill. Of course I can just skip that and continue on but no, my OCD won't let me.

and oh, cool plot twist near the end.

the only time you're required to use the B/C-teams is at the very end.  Just save the money and buy their best weapons then.  Technically their best weapons require creating in shops with rare parts.

And like I said, I can't just skip buying a weapon, must get dem skills.

"Please, Win"

Final boss then proceed to rape me non stop for 3 rounds, one is even solo, just my man Adol and some big ass tentacle and his rape lasers.

It was bullshit yet, satsfying. That's basically YS7. Boring, tired RPG shit till you reach the bossfights where the fun is to the max.
