Recettear - An Item Shop's Tale

Quote
Recettear is a game about an item store, the girl who lives in it, and the fairy whose job it is to make sure that the girl doesn't burn down the item store by accident.

Playing the game involves gathering items - either by playing the markets in the city of Pensee, or grabbing an adventurer and delving into the dungeons that dot the countryside - and selling them to the customers who come through your doors. Tear, the fairy, is here to collect on a loan your father took out - and she'll have to take the store, which doubles as your house, if you can't pay up!

The game is split into two main parts, then: selling items, and exploring dungeons. There isn't really much of anything quite like this combination in any other game, and the number of items you can find is massive.

Looks like what Animal Crossing would be if it were a real game.

This is very exciting

What are those other projects you’re hoping to work on?

Well, it’s still a little early to think about that – we need to get Recettear out the door after all – but if we let our heads drift into the clouds, we’d like to do EGS’ upcoming project Territoire. It’s really interesting and is rather like the illicit lovechild of Civilization and Final Fantasy Tactics.

There's a demo on the website too, but it's available through Impulse on September 10th.

Have they said what the price is going to be? $20 sounds about right for this.

They're talking about $20 IIRC. Good price to support them and get more of this stuff localised

wow, that demo was awesome.  buying this for sure.  I just wish the combat was a bit less stiff.

the one adult white guy is cool.  He bought expensive items at high prices and didn't complain once! I let him have a chocolate bar for 110% because he was my favorite customer  :heart

If I wasn't swamped in other games with no time to play much of anything period, I'd give this a shot.  The Torneko chapter in DQIV was fun.

mmm... i don't know,on one hand there is that classic satisfaction one gets from playing RPG that is about number going up more and more and on the other it's a pretty repetitive and simple game, you buy stuff for cheap and then sell it for just a bit more money, sometimes some good rise in price (there was a moment where dagger raised in prices and i had a stock full of high price daggers,i made like a truckload of money :lol) sometimes someone ask an item in particular but apart from that it never gets complicated

sometimes you take a trip to a dungeon,to get more free goods but the dungeon exploring is really basic stuff

"Wow what a cheap game! Let's support them to get more! What a unique game on the PC!"

"I'll just wait for a sale. I guess."

Magus is the only honest one of you guys. He doesn't pretend like he wants to support indie developers because he's just going to pirate everything anyway.

The only things I pirate are old PC games that aren't legally available on a DD platform and DS ROMs.  8)

i finished the game in around 7 hours, basicaly what i said before still applies because the game never moves from the "buy low, sell high" concept

i like the game because it is somewhat original in concept and i have a weak spot for any game where you power level, but at the same time it is so simple in concept and so monotonus it's hard for me to say "this is good! you guys should give this a try!" the whole dungeon crawling segments become pointless in the later part of the game (to show this there are only 2 basic dungeons, one that is 15 floor long and another that is 30 floor long) because the stuff you can buy and resell give you a better income than the crappy item you find in the dungeon

there are different character to use in dungeon but by the time you unlock them, the basic swordman you have is so strong, you don't have any reason to use the other (coincidentaly he's also the one with the better stats)

the other thing that ticks me off is that you should play the game the opposite way the tutorial teach you to play, the tutorial makes it sounds like you should always try to shot high and haggle to get more bangs out of your item but you get a bonus to your experience point everytime you sell an item without haggling, ultimately this bonus gives you quicker access to more expensive item, which in turn racks you a lot more money than you would have got if you just haggled all the time for cheap items, why the game never seems to make any straight mention of this bonus is a mystery

mmm... what else? after finishing the game there is

1) a new game+ mode where you begin anew with your level and your items
2) an endless mode where you can play without worrying about reaching any money target (by the way this is probably the best time to add the fact that this target gets a CRAZY increase spike in the last segment of the game) there are also some extra dungeons to explore altough i doubt they are worth the time
3) a survival mode which plays like the normal game but after reaching the last money target, you get another higher target until you can't pay anymore

tl;dr version

it's cool but repetitive, probably not worth 15 quids,i'm a dirty :pirate who hates those poor indie developers
