Waiting is the worst part of being a gamer.
« on: August 29, 2010, 09:42:16 PM »
Recently I've found that I am never satisfied with the software I own and/or what is available for purchase.

Everyday I'm like:
"Man I wish Case Zero was out now."
"Man why cant that new Red Dead DLC release already."
"I wish Vanquish was out."

And it never ends. As soon as something comes out theres always something I want more on the horizon. It's getting really bad. I feel like I'm beginning to miss the point of playing games in the first place. Achievements have ruined my shit to some degree but I feel like I'm slipping further down some crappy slope.

What do you guys suggest? Take a break seems like the most obvious choice here.

The best thing about being a gamer is knowing that Two Worlds II will be released in just a few weeks.

Simply play your backlog. I generally have a shitload of older games I never completed.

But if you must play the new stuff, honestly gamefly is a god send. I literally don't understand why everybody doesn't use such a service. I get to sample everything without dropping $60 dollars all the time. I can't believe I use to waste so much money on games when a gamefly account saves me so much in the long run.

You're addicted to the rush of buying something you were looking forward to, not so much the game when you actually get it. I kinda had this problem back when I was trying to juggle a ps2, gba, and a gamecube. I'd say, dedicate yourself to one or two platforms that would suit you, think really hard about what genres you actually like, and realise you don't need to buy multiple franchises in the same genre. If you like First Person Shooters for example, don't buy every major release that's going to come out that year. Research your options and try to buy that one FPS that's going to have good replay value and that you're going to stick with in the long run.

I think buying new games is a form of retail therapy. You get a little rush and a little excitement but ultimately its a big waste because like anything 95% of games are just average or worse. Which is why I recommend the gamefly thing (or whatever service you want to use). $20 bucks a month for two games. You get to try out anything you want and then move on to the next thing. Or keep it for awhile if you really enjoy what you are playing. You get to scratch that itch without blowing money left and right. Same as Netflix.

Ah. Well that sucks. Surprising that not every country has such a service. I looked for one in Sweden for Skidmark but couldn't find one.

This is why I'm just going through my backlog and completing a bunch of games I was too lazy to finish in the first place. Vanquish and Dodonpachi Resurrection will be out before I know it.

I also find it helps if you don't hype shit too much, in fact, just try to ignore a game until its released if you can. I was pretty psyched for mega man 9 and the wait took forever.  I consciously chose to be 'unaware' of megaman 10 developments and the release comes up on you so fast that way.  So, yeah, in general try to tell yourself the game you're looking toward to probably ain't gonna be the second coming (because it usually aint- see ps3 exclusive hype hurricanes for reference)

This helps. I don't read much about games I'm interested in now besides Fallout and Civ5. I haven't read anything about Mafia 2 and that helped.

Having a backlog helps too, but I find myself playing Team Fortress 2 more than anything so my backlog gets bigger :(

This also.

Once I decreased my posting at GAF I found, my "hype meter" died which is a good thing. You aren't constantly looking to post in a circle jerk of trying to get each other pumped up.

Also as pilonv1 mentioned I always have a couple of "go to" shooters that I can always play online to fill my gaming crave between the actual big titles I want.

I suggest playing Tomb Raider Underworld that way you won't want to touch another fucking game for months.  I tried playing it a few hours today and I just said to myself, "I'm done with this shit."  I then went outside and pruned my apple trees.  That was infinitely more entertaining.

^ :rofl

I actually liked TR Underworld.

Yeah, I think the problem is not the quantity of titles I have to play (I have a big JRPG backlog and plenty of great games I can go back to for more achievements), but the fact of there just isn't enough going on in my life at the moment.

- mindless 40hr a week job
- comfortable social life, but kinda quiet atm becuase it's Winter here
- no girlfriend at present, so no time spent with botanical gardens/fancy restaurants/sexing/watching DVDs that only she wants to watch

thus the most taxing thing I have to worry about is when a new piece of downloadable content is coming out. 75% of my gaming purchases these days are DLC or XBLA games, so the whole 'retail therapy' explanation doesn't work really.

All this shall change soon, however. I will be studying a diploma of interactive visual design so I should hopefully be much more stimulated within about a months time. And then the great software will be flowing like wine because I'll be doing school stuff in the meantime. Hopefully. I dunno, maybe I just need a holiday. I forgot to take my meds over the weekend so my head is going to explode from all the thinking. Bah

Uh... what is the worst part about being a gamer? You have plenty of time to play games. You are just complaining. There is something else bothering you, you are using games as a scapegoat...

Yeah mate. Gotta have to wait longer for Case 0 now.  :lol

I usually don't mind all the waiting. The are so many other games I can play in between. But I hate it when games get delayed just before their "official" release. The Case 0 delay is just distinguished mentally-challenged. The game was supposed to come out tomorrow.  :lol

Yeah, I hadn't played the TR series since the PS1 days, but TRU was pretty fun. Looked beautiful, some good puzzles... shame about the shitty camera though.

I've always said the hardcore gaming community reminds me of the hardcore hip hop community (or probably any niche community). Its that invisible line where a hobby changes from just something you like to it being a lifestyle choice with an invisible set of rules you must adhere to.

I went thorugh my pile of games and started my nightmare/collectibles run of Alan Wake. Forgot how good the game was, and I had fun!

Also going to get into Left 4 Dead 2 proper, I won a copy and I've barely played it. Whats the best way to get good at the game? I suck, currently.

TRU's camera is the king of Shit Town, which is just 30 miles west of Crapburg.  I'm doing way too many blind jumps in the game for this to be any fun.

I loved Legend and Anniversary, but there's just no way I can make it through TRU.

I don't think there's really any trick to getting good at L4D2, you just have to get into it and start playing. It helps to play with people that already know what they're doing though.

My gaming taste has been condensed down to liking a few staple series. The main game I'm interested in is Elder Scrolls 5 and fortunately New Vegas is coming out in October. Other than that, maybe FF Versus XIII.

Yeah, with niche gaming drying up bigtime, I've been doing the same... DQ, Mario, Ys, and FF, the latter only because I have Stockholm Syndrome. But the first 3 I mentioned rarely disappoint.
