:bow THIS ALBUM :bow2

Better than Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer. Yes it is. Believe that. So R&B/Funkish it's crazy. I literally was dancing along in my car after only TWO TRACKS.

SOOOOOOOOO glad I'm seeing them in Covington ONLY TWO FUCKING WEEKS after the album comes out. It will probably be the best show I've ever been to.

No, hipsters don't like anything. Didn't you get the memo?

I listened to it a bit and didn't really care for it.  And I disliked their contribution to The ArchAndroid.  I'm tired of George Fruit.

Skeletal Lamping AKA the worst thing I put into my earholes over the past 5 years

Skeletal Lamping sounds like what Expendables fans see when they watch the Scott Pilgrim trailer

George Fruit is like that weird character Garth Brooks thought up.  Unfortunately Fruit has been going longer. :'(

Skeletal Lamping is amazing.
"gallery piece" forever.

Gallery Piece is the ONLY SONG on the ENTIRE ALBUM

it manages to run with the same thing for 3 whole minutes

the rest of the disc is like watching Girl Talk awkwardly fuck Prince for an hour and change

spoiler (click to show/hide)
sorry, I Really cannot stand that album though :'(

Hissing Fauna is amazing. The rest is hit and miss, with a rapidly sliding hit-to-miss ratio. Skeletal Lamping reminded me of recent Tori Amos albums more than anything else

you guys are absolutely insane.  the album is experimental in that each "song" is a collection of 30 second long loops reconfigured and it doesn't conform to typical pop structure, which is absolutely fine for a psychedelic pop band.

I'd rather they continue to expand what they feel comfortable doing rather than continue to churn out the same album using the same structures over and over and over again.

at least you put "song" in quotation marks ;)

it's not just "typical pop structure," they don't have any structure at all. it's just this then that then this other thing and finally, something completely different. I have no place to hang my hat, I have no point of entry from where I can begin to understand and enjoy the music. I gave Skeletal Lamping a solid dozen listens, based on my love for previous Of Montreal albums, and the more I listened to it the LESS sense it made.

as long as we're talking about psychadelic pop bands, though, what's your final take on the new MGMT?

I really loved Skeletal Lamping at first (I think I even mentioned on here at one point that I liked it more than Hissing Fauna), but after I listened to it enough to where it began to lose its feeling of spontaneity, I lost interest.  Similar observation with the new MGMT album.  It's too bad I can't just forget how the songs go and experience the madness again and again.  I think they'd hold up better if Kevin Barnes wasn't so goddamn obnoxious.

Speaking of MGMT, I saw them live a few weeks back and the kids were shocked SHOCKED by some of the stuff they played.  They finished off their three singles all prior to the encore, played "Siberian Breaks" in its entirety (met with whispers of, "what is this?", "i have no idea but it sucks", and "this is so boring"), and finished off the night with a 15 minute rendition of "The Handshake" segued into "I Found a Whistle".

It was fucking incredible how many people walked out during the encore, but it was the best part of the whole damn show.

this album feels like a huge step backwards.  like it should have come between Hissing and Skeletal.  I don't know how much i like it.  It will take a few listens to digest.
