Why do people say the PS3 is a shitty blu ray player?

For my work, I use several blu ray players, and many of the ones we have are pretty frustrating to use. However, the PS3 is among the easiest to use and most responsive.

Yet I see all the time on gaf (and even here sometimes) that the PS3 sucks at being a good blu ray player.

I haven't kept up lately, but it was the best for many years after launch.  It's still damn good, but I'm sure there are other players with extra l33t features out there now that players sell for $100-200 across the board.


It's certainly not a bad player like the PS2 was.

PS3 has the fastest Blu-Ray load times of pretty much any machine out there.

Blu-ray drive does have slow read speeds (2X) that's why PS3 games often have big installs.

Admittedly, Blu-Ray looks dicey from several non-capacity angles. Blu-Ray movies require a 1.5x Blu-Ray drive, or 54Mbits/second. Sony announced that PS3 uses a 2x BD drive, which is 72Mbits/second or 9MB/second. The Xbox 360 uses a 12x DVD, which should give it about 16MB/second. That is significantly faster for games and will result in shorter load times. And that 12x DVD drive should be a whole lot cheaper. (Note that the PS3 drive will do 8x DVD, and even that is faster than 2x BD.)

Only thing I dislike about my PS3 as a blu-ray player is that the only remote solution that doesn't suck seems to be the official one.  The thing is huge and because it is all about that bluetooth, my old ass universal remote doesn't know what to do.

Only people that import a lot are going to be troubled by that, although I bought one of those crappy little Sherwoods that play 50hz and are region free as a backup player.

X360 is obsolete if you have a gaming PC.

Most of the games nowadays are multiplatform anyway. It's all about the exclusives, and Sony has the best ones.

Anyway, I rarely used the Blu-Ray movie functionality of the Ps3. Already own a standalone BR player.
