Need fashion tips for friend's wedding!
« on: September 04, 2010, 01:13:51 PM »
Yo, I have no fashion sense at all.  It's like my weakpoint that you can hit for 9999 damage.  I can look at someone and be like "oh that looks nice" but for some reason I can't do it for myself.
I'm going to a wedding today.  Never been before.  I have NO IDEA what you wear.  All I've heard is that you can't go wrong in a standard suit & tie and that you DON'T WEAR BLACK.

So I've got some Qs

1.  Tie or no tie?
vs.

2.  What color is good for weddings?  I don't have white and since black is out, choices are grey, navy blue, and that color that you pronounce baije but I don't know how you spell it.  Also have a brown suit but didn't bother:

vs. vs.

don't mind the tie & shirt colors.  They are just placeholders.  I have a dozen shirts/ties and I'll figure something out once I establish the basic suit color.

and this is like a very formal churchy wedding.

go with the lightest suit...the first one.

also, some of your jackets seem to be a bit too big! next time you go shopping, get fitted?

Seriously though, all the weddings I've been to, I just wore khakis and a dress shirt and I never felt under-dressed.

Either you're pretty small or those suits are a tad too big for you. I'd get a suit that's 'lighter' too, those look pretty heavy.

Is it cool to just go no jacket to a church wedding?  Just nice slacks & button shirt with no tie?

both.

I'm small and I'm borrowing suits from people bigger than me :P

so I have a good light shirt + tie + dress pants thing going on.  But when I google around everything says for semi-formal afternoon weddings, you're supposed to wear a suit.  This is confusing!
They also say to wear lighter suits, but all my light suits are too big and the only suit I have that fits spot on is black.

Black is fine too.  If you're really that worried about it, where the black suit and a bright shirt and tie.  I usually keep it pretty formal and always wear white shirts to weddings.

He doesn't need a tux unless he's the one getting married or really close family.

Bebpo, is this a friend's wedding?  Why don't you just ask him/her what the dress code is?

I don't get to dress up that much, so events like weddings are the only times I wear a suit and tie.  It's nice to slick up every once in a while, I say go for the suit and tie and do it up right.  You'll get compliments, the wedding members will appreciate the extra care you took, and you might walk away with a pocketful of digits.  Go with the grey or the khaki (my tastes run towards the grey).

I an excited to go to this wedding too! I just picked up a vintage jacket from the tailor's this morning. Am gonna rock a bow tie, too. Bebpo, too late now, but FIT is more important than color or even quality. I'm sure you'll be fine with whatever you picked. :)

I think the dark blue matches your eyes best. The second one is a bit more chill looking.

Look who you're taking advice from:  Oklahomans and Kentuckians who probably wear RealTree to church.  It's a wedding; wear a suit and tie.  Underdressed is always worse than overdressed.  You can get a little more relaxed at the reception.

Shirts are overrated, just wear a wife-beater.

So I didn't wear a suit and I still felt a little overdressed having collar button + tie.  Sure a few people wore suits, but a lot of guys just wore a dress shirt with the collar open.  Was fine, but for the reception in a few hours I'm going more casual.

Wore this olive-green shirt, but buttoned up with a dark green/black tie and some grey dress pants.

First thing I'm going to do is wash this shit out of my hair.  I never use gel but I tried some since I wanted to look formal.  Instead I just feel like I look like a business man and that's not the same as casual wedding attender.

Also kind of tempted to shave because my Employment Law Professor has awesome facial hair that I want to give a try one of these days.

Wear a tie, just take if off if no one else is wearing one. Better to be overdressed than under dressed at a wedding

Weddings in the midwest are no different from Barbecues. You just show up and eat free food.

Wedding was great

and Jinfash, yeah everyone in my family was married by the time I was born and no divorces/re-marriages happened (parents, aunts, grandparents), all my cousins/siblings are younger than me, and my group of friends are not really the "I'm going to get married soon" type.  Therefore I haven't been to any weddings before this ;)
