9/11
« on: September 11, 2010, 02:16:20 AM »
9th year anniversary.

I was in 10th grade world history when it happened. We sat there in awe.

Band (after school) was cancelled. Mupepe and I were in the school military marching band.

So I went to his house because I didn't want to go home alone. I played his dreamcast. Played Sonic Adventure 2 and Soul Reaver. He called Ruben because I didn't know where to go in Soul Reaver and I just didn't have the mind for video games that day. His brother had some friends over as well, or was that the day we skipped out on playing in the main street parade? I don't remember. Walked home, took me about an hour to get home.

Quite an adventure and long ass day.

The fear, the shit I took for granted, I remember the exact words my history teacher told me too.

And yet I can't rememeber what the fuck I had for breakfast yesterday morning.

What's even scarier than 9/11 is the fact that there are people alive today that you can have a conversation with who were not born when it happened.

How is that scary?  ???

Here you go boys.

Watching the CBS coverage of the day is just fucking ridiculous, especially during the first hour or so.  It's almost like Bryant Gumble was going out of his way to be ignorant.

I was in frosh week in my freshman year of university. I remember walking into the student union building, seeing a bunch of people huddled around a TV, walking over to see what was going on, and standing there for 6 hours watching.

I remember pulling into work, listening to ESPN radio, and they were reporting that there was a small fire in the north tower caused by a small plane flying into it.  Didn't think much of it at the time.  I then went to the autopsy room to get prepped when I got a call about the second plane hitting and that's kind of when things got extremely frustrating for me. I desperately wanted to watch or listen to what was going on but we had a full day of bodies to go through......it was just irritating.  By the time I got home building 7 had just collapsed so basically I ended up missing the day's events as they happened.

In the morning think I was reading GAF (or maybe Opa-Ages). There was a "TERRORISTS CRASH A PLANE INTO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER" thread near the top, but I glanced at it, thought "that didn't happen, must be a metaphor or inside joke or something", and didn't bother clicking on the thread or looking at anything else related to the event for another three hours or so.

I was in art class and they announced it over the loud radio.  I leaned over to a friend and asked "what is the world trade center?" His reply was "I dunno, but I think they're letting us out early".  And we did a period after that class.  The other thing I remember is a bunch of teachers coming to escort a girl out of the classroom.  It was later that someone said "you don't know about the twin towers?...like from that simpsons episode" and I finally realized what they were talking about.  What it all meant wasn't understood until I came home and saw that every channel was talking about it.  The other thing about the internet at the time were all the crazy theories.  Things like the devil's face coming out of the smoke and that money folding trick.

And a 9 year anniversary? that's not really an important date.  Just another reason to run those stories in the news for now.

I came into school about 7:50 [8:50 eastern time] with my mom [who worked there], one of the teachers there came out of the break room and said that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I didn't really think much about it at the time, assuming that it was just some small plane that had gotten lost in fog or something. But sometime later, the principle came over the loudspeaker and said for everybody to stay calm and keep going about their normal work. I didn't have any idea what was going on at the time, but my teacher got the TV in the room hooked up and then I just saw this image of NYC engulfed in smoke. It completely blew my mind.

We didn't get out early, but after I got home I was pretty much glued to the TV the rest of the day.

Now I kinda want to see a GIF made of planes vs WTC in Advance Wars style.

Also, I should just type out a "I remember where I was" post in notepad that I repost every year in these threads.

The part that I remember the most was my English teacher (I was in 10th grade) crying as she told me that the Twin Towers were gone. I was just like...what? I had heard about a plane crashing into one of them earlier, but I think that's all I had heard until then.

More people died during the tsunami in asia years ago. Why won't peolpe make threads about that. But oooh it's America. So it's more important.  ::)

We aren't Asian. We're American. A bunch of people dying in a tsunami is sad, but honestly there are multiple sides to this:

1. The tsunami was not a terrorist attack and act of war committed on another country, that being an overwhelming percent of EB's home country. And comparing a terrorist attack to a fucking tsunami is stupid to begin with as it is a natural disaster.

2. We remember 9/11 every year because we are Americans are we have a bigger tie to Americans getting killed than a bunch of asian people drowning. Why? Because that's being ethnocentric, something every human is. This is like saying it unfair to remember the death of someone you loved but scoff at the death of thousands somewhere else. You didn't know them, and you shouldn't be expected to grieve for them. This is simply human.

3. 9/11 is an event that changed the world, in terms of foreign policy, in terms of safety, in terms of Bush's horrible act of being president and what he did to the world, in terms of where we're at right now, it was a big turning point. Comparing it to a tsunami is only possible through the mind of a child.

They key to bringing more awareness to other tragedies is making them more known, not deriding 9/11 and its effect on our world. Americans remember the holocaust and the bombings of Japan all the time. Why? Because not only were they global changing events but also because people DON'T forget shit like that and no one will ever let us forget. So if you want people in America to care about the tsunami, pitch a REMEMBER ASIAN TSUNAMI day or something.

yeah 9/11 sucked, it was sad, and I was in a weird place emotionally for a while afterwards

but what's even sadder is the manufactured dedication and false-sense of patriotism that evolved from that day that continues to spread fuckwittery around this country.
