Netflix TV Marathon Season 2: The Shield
« on: September 24, 2010, 12:57:58 PM »
From June-September I netflix'd the entire series of The Wire and discovered the best show ever made.

It's time for season 2 and I figured, why stop with just one crime drama? So here we go. The Shield

Season 1 - Disc 1 - Episodes 1, 2, 3 and 4.

A cop show with attitude. It's enjoyable so far and I'm def liking it. Maybe not the best idea to watch another crime drama after The Wire tho.

The show does a good job making me switch between hating and loving Vic. He's such a scum bag tho I hope he gets fleshed out more as the series goes. Boring if he stays a fairly one-note character. Four episodes in and we got our season arc already established. Captain wanting to expose corruption to get a seat on the city council. At first I was on his side because Vic shenanigans are pretty disgusting (kill a cop? WTF). But even tho I still want him to fall I dislike the captain because he's only doing it to advance his political career.

thumbs up so far.

So anyone else watched this show? How does everyone rate the seasons? It doesn't get progressively worse I hope.

The show has the EB Seal of Approval. Seasons 5 and 7 are the best, so no it does not get progressively worse.

Season 1 - Disc 2 - episodes 5, 6, 7 and 8

the gay love story is laaaaaaame. it's like Omar on The Wire except Julien isn't interesting at all.

All the seasons are good. But season 5 and 7 reach god modes in ways most shows only dream of.

The show really makes a complete psychopath lovable, for a time. And then for encore the show takes an even more disgusting character and makes you feel sorry for him by the end. Definitely one of the most amazing feats I've ever witnessed.

Season 3 is the weakest.  Which makes sense because it is the longest season of the seven (15 episodes instead of the typical 13).  It seemed like the show didn't know where to take itself and just kind of lingered about for a while until the end of the season.

The show is great, I'm just saying Season 3 is the least greatest.

The best seasons are 2, 4-7.

I really should continue this eventually. I loved 1/2, got bored with 3, then stopped after the S3 finale. Someday I'll finish it.

Season 1 - Season Finale

satisfying end.
however I feel the endgame and ultimate big bad happened a little to abruptly. suddenly Gillroy is evil and whatnot. then Connie leaving. it all happened to fast. I did really enjoy the finale shot

now onto

Season 2 - episodes 1, 2, 3, and 4

Season 2 starts off great and does a really good job establishing a plot arc. Really sad to see Tio go. The Tijuana episode was bad ass and what Mackey did to Armadillo was crazy. So far I'm liking this season more than I did Season 1.

Cohen was right. Season 3 was fantastic. The aftermath of the money train was perfectly executed IMO. How the Strike team slowly unraveled over the money was just so damn well done. It actually felt like it was happening slowly over time instead of a sudden moment where one scene they are buddies then the other they are at each others throats. I couldn't think of a better bookend for this season than the last scene. Especially when you go from S2 finale to S3. Strike Team happy as shit in front of a table of money then flashfoward a season? So good.

The actual argument between Vic and Shane felt so authentic. Back and forth reactions just sounded real. When Shane questions how long Vic will be able to manage his daughter you can see pure rage in Vic's eyes.

So big thumbs up on Season 3. starting season 4 tomorrow.

wanna comment on the Aceveda mouth rape storyline.

When it happened early in season 3 I was pretty shocked. it's not something you expect to happen to a character with such authority in a show. but i did see why they did it had an idea where it would go. tbh i wasn't looking forward to seeing him all boo-hoo for the rest of the season. to my surprise they took it in a different direction and made him be the total badass at the end. when he's reciting to the mouth raper how much he could fuck his life up was pretty great. I'm hoping the entire situation doesnt just get swept under the rug in the end tho because getting mouth raped at gun point would have some long lasting effects on a person.

watched season 4. just started season 5.

season 4 was ok. i enjoyed watching the fallout from the Strike Team breaking up and seeing what they where up to. Glenn Close's character was alright but I felt they tried to have it both ways with her. She was neither ally nor enemy and it ended up just being a little uninteresting to me. also I didn't really buy Anthony Anderson as a villain. but i did enjoy seeing Shane try to play the Vic role and fail utterly.

Season 5 however is already awesome. Forest Whitaker is just killing it. I LOVED the scene at the end of episode 4

Didn't Glenn Close have to leave before they wanted her to leave?  I thought I remember them saying they wanted her for 2 seasons.
IIRC, she wanted to move back to New York.

Too bad, she was my favorite character that season.

It's definitely more consistent and went out on a higher note than The Wire did. Don't think the writing or acting touches The Wire though

The Wire S4
The Shield S5
The Shield S7
The Wire S3

Real talk question: is Breaking Bad S3 worthy of God Tier?

I still think The Shield is better than The Wire but both are quite different.

I admit that a lot of it might have to do with the experience of watching the show when it was aired.  I still remembered the episode where Aceveda blew Juan and the next day, a local radio station had Benito Martinez on to talk about it :o  It was fucking awesome.  Not to mention discussing the episodes, the highs and lows with friends who watched the show, etc.

I am glad to see that the show is getting its due.  When it was on, a bunch of shitfucks on the internet thought 24 killed The Shield, which still baffles me to this day as 24 is boring at best.

I like them both but I still think The Shield is better than The Wire.

The Wire is objectively better, I think. It's just immaculately written and acted for the most part. But taken as a whole, and looking back at it, The Shield is about as satisfying as a television series can be. I enjoyed watching The Shield more.

And it really depends on your definition of God-Tier, PD. I love Breaking Bad, but it's hard for me to put any of its seasons it on the same level as those four seasons of television.

yea, the finale was a punch to the chest. Vic was always a pretty shitty guy, but he did just enough to make himself likable; hell I even cheered for him at times. But by the end you realize you've liked and cheered for a complete sociopath
