I just debated with a libertarian irl
« on: September 28, 2010, 08:09:33 PM »
Went to get dinner because I'm going to be working later than I thought. DR2 nooo  :'(  Saw some guy with a Ron Paul book, mentioned it to him and we had a talk for like an hour.

It was this for one hour over coffee and steak:

"schools should be free market"
"then who would fund the schools?"
"charities."
"you can't be this naive."
"fact of the matter is that public schools in america are failing, wouldn't you agree?"
"Yes, very much so."
"what about the poor? what about the disenfranchised schools in the ghetto?"
"Poor people? Why do the poor matter?"
"..."
"They have churches."

then he went on about privacy (drug use, consuming, digesting). He said that the gov had no right to interfere with people and what they do privately in their homes so long as what they do does not harm others and this includes digesting anything they want, without regulation, even if they kill themselves. So I asked him what he thought about government regulation of company products that contain excess amounts of sugar and sodium. His answer? Let the consumers decide what the best and most healthy product. THE SAME CONSUMERS WHO MADE AVATAR THE BEST SELLING MOVIE?!?!?!

We hit a lot of issues and some of them I agree with, but almost every point he made was followed up with sugar laced naivete. Like his stance on foreign policy. Sure, I agree we should take our guys out of fucking South America or whatever. But then he told me he thinks we should get rid of our OWN military bases. Like here. At home.

Really?

I'm sorry if this thread seemed unnecessary, I've just never openly discussed anything with a libertarian in this manner and I was baffled. It's pure utopian "politics" at its best that seems appeal to one group and one group only: privileged white people.

Child labor laws are silly and outdated. In the good old days, kids as young as five could work as they pleased; from textile factories to iron smelts. But today, the age old right of children to work is under attack!

"Well," he says, "there's a lot of people on welfare who don't deserve it. Too many people are living off the government."

"But," I protest, "you live off the government. And have been your whole life!"

"Yeah," he says, "but I don't make very much."

Libertarians fancy themselves as "rebels". They also like to think of themselves as intellectuals when essentially they follow a simplistic dogmatic non realistic blueprint for life. Which is why they are generally worse to talk to than people who actually self identify as Republicans or Democrats. Because at least potentially there is some give and take in such a conversation. That is almost impossible with true libertarians. Fortunately there are very few of them irl.

This board's fascination with libertarians amuses me.  However, I used to work at the Cato Institute, so I suppose I'm like a gynecologist who's bored of pussy.

For what its worth I think libertarians are a matter of discussion because their numbers on message boards far outstrip their numbers in real life. So there is always a slight disconnect there.

Sames as atheists, or lots of other groups that seem a lot more populous on the internet.

I think the style works well when there are multiple unrelated topics brought up in a single post.  If you don't like it, don't read it.  I don't really care.

For every interesting thing Jesse has to say he also has something batshit insane to say like his conspiracy comments about the WTC. So  that's probably not a great debate on either side. Stupid versus Wacky. (Although Jesse has said some things I do like concerning church and state)

People felt the need to create another term for responding to individual points?

because when the line-by-line responses don't address the core argument or posit an alternative view, it's a disingenuous and somewhat cowardly attempt by the fisker to diminish his opponent without presenting an argumentative surface of his own. fisking, unlike a proper rebuttal, often provides very little to an overall discussion and more often still just fragments it, usually to the much-needed benefit of the fisker. have you ever argued on the internet before?
