4 Heroes of Light
« on: October 08, 2010, 10:14:23 AM »
mmm i'm playing this and i guess it's ok? i really like the cell shaded graphics and the faux 8-bit music but the whole game feels a little dull,i've heard people complain about the item limit and personaly it hasn't bothered me

another complain that i've heard is that you can't target, again so far this has been never a problem

i've also heard people complaining about having to finish a dungeon and then having to treck back to town because they weren't properly equipped, but it hasn't happened to me so far... why? because this game is incredibly paint by numbers

"YOU SHOULD BUY A EARTH SHIELD TO FIGHT AGAINST THE SAND DEVIL"
"I HEARD THE SAND DEVIL IS WEAK TO WATER SPELLS"

but where do i get a water spe....

"I HEARD THERE IS SOMETHING HIDDEN IN THE CASTLE!"
"I HEARD THE GUARDS LOWER THEIR GUARD WHEN IT'S NIGHT"

oooookkaaaayyyyyy

*30 minutes later in a different town*

"YOU SHOULD BUY A WATER SHIELD IF YOU ARE GOING INSIDE THE WATER DUNGEON OH AND I HAVE A FIRE DAGGER TO SELL AND FIRE SPELLS *nudge nudge*"

now i'm in the 4th town and they sell a fire shield, water weapons and everybody talks about a monster called hellhound,GEE I WONDER IF THE NEXT BOSS IS WEAK TO WATER AND USE FIRE ATTACKS?!?!?!?!?

there is a job system but so far i have 5 jobs, the traveler has the awesome ability of escaping battle's,the white mage get cheaper white spells (which really doesn't help) the black mage get cheaper black spells (which does help since so far the whole game has been "hit x with y spell") the thief steal stuff (which i don't really need) and the bard has stat buff's (which so far i haven't had the chance to use)

apparently i was wrong about the next boss
spoiler (click to show/hide)
he used dark attack and was weak to light weapons :duh
[close]

also i found a money exploit (something that should not be there) and bought a firaga book only to discover that it barely does any more damage when compared to basic fire,i was a little disappointed but i guess that at least means i won't spend the next dungeon burning everything to a crisp

also i got 2 more jobs
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the merchant gets more gems (you see, there are no ability point of sort in this game and instead you buy new skills with gems that monster drop) and the alchemist gets to use items for free (meh ability)

the game is still keeping his elemental dim-wittery,i just went into the ice cavern, with ice shields and fire weapons... i'm starting to think there will be no end to this and that the whole game will never graduate from that (next dungeon and everybody is DARKNESSDARKNESSDARKNESS and the shop coincidentaly has a full selection of dark protection, light weapons and light spells!)

geebus it's nice to have a boss with an elemental weakness and an elemental attack that you can resist but you can't design every single fucking boss like that! (i know that shin megami tensei does it but it works there because the boss DO have multiple kind of attack and getting such skills isn't a matter of simply walking into the latest shop)

to top thing off,i just was testimony to some high level bullshit, you see there is this tower dungeon, you climb it to the top and on the top you find a rainbow and a NPC going all like "YOU NEED RAINBOW SHOES TO CLIMB THE RAINBOW" TOO BAD THE RAINBOW SHOES ARE BOUGHT IN THE SECOND TOWN OF THE GAME,SO I HAD TO EXIT THE DUNGEON,TRAVEL BACK TO THE SECOND TOWN,BUY THE SHOES,TRAVEL BACK AGAIN TO THE TOWER AND HAD TO CLIMB THE TOWER AGAIN JUST BECAUSE THESE GUYS SUFFER FROM SEVERE DUMBFUCKERY

anyway the last jobs unlocked

spoiler (click to show/hide)
- Elementalist: makes your elemental attack stronger and has a natural resistance to every element in the game,if the game keeps up like this i suspect this to be one of the most powerfull jobs

- Ranger: good with bows, has a skill that ensure you hit your target, deal decent damage

- Monk: more powerfull when unharmed but still quite weak, his skill help dealing critical hit so maybe he's usefull after all?

- Scholar: good with books and can debuff enemies, haven't tried it

Looks like "My First JRPG"  Not in the art direction, which looks great, but in the mechanics.  Is it true that you can't target enemies or allies when casting magic?

yeah i'd say that's the main problem i have but the whole game looks so lovely and the scenario is so delightfull old school that i don't want to stop

and about your second question... well it's an half truth, you can't target enemies or allies at all with any action but each action has it's own set of rule when picking targets,so for example attack magic always pick the last enemy on the line, heal magic always heal the guy with the lowest HP,someone attacking with a sword will hit the first enemy on the line but if you are equipped with a bow or a spear you'll hit the last guy as if you were attacking with magic

but really so far it has never been a problem,it works kind of like riviera if you played that

spoiler (click to show/hide)
i now have a dragon and can explore the whole world,i need to find 5 mystical weapons or some shit like that and the game has become somewhat non-linear in the fact that i can tackle the next set of event in any order i want

guess that's enough for people like himuro to bite

this "world of ruin" segments has been really disappointing

1) they could have used this chance to make you explore a little but instead they force you to go trough the same dungeons twice

2) one of the jobs is called "hero" and has an attack that deals like a gazillion of damage and another that can finish horde of mobs with relative easiness,to top it off as you clear these various sidequest, you get a spell called "lux" which give you such a big increase in stat that it's basicaly like playing under god mode

in short this was the chance for the game to show some balls and start having boss that did more than spamming a single elemental spell over and over while finaly giving me a chance to use all those cool skill i collected and instead the game went the complete opposite of that and now i find myself able to kill boss in 2 turns!

i guess at this point i might as well finish the game but i'm really disappointed,it saddens me a lot to say this but etrian odyssey 3 is clearly better

anyway new jobs!

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Party Host - extra damage when doing team attack and a set of skills to help you enter the psyched up state,so you can pull off team attack
Hero - has an easier team entering psyche up,his last skills also deals like a truckload of damage
Spell Fencer - attacks with both swords and magic and can imbue weapons with magic elements which would actualy be usefull if it wasn't for the fact that almost every weapon has already an element
Monk - no no not the same as the fist monk (which here is called fighter) but a new class which gets stronger the more time it dies in battle,it also has skills that let you control dead allies like if they were still alive,it sounds like a cool concept but i'm not sure it has any real use
Dancer - has skills which increase Action Point which in turns let you pull off better attacks without charging up first
Paladin - the usual tank class that's omnipresent in every job system
Alchemist - a different alchemist than the previous (the previous one is actualy called salve-maker) specializes in attack item, has a skill which let you make attack item out of nothing
Shaman - specializes in dark magic tough i'm not sure what counts as "dark magic" i guess all those status effect spells count as dark magic

to make note of how bad this whole elemental problem is,i just fought what i believe to be the third to last boss,i had 4 characters, one character died in a single round of attack before i could do anything at all,the second was in the red and died shortly after and the other two? barely received any sort of damage,in fact no matter what the boss did, every attack would deal a piddly 1,so it really didn't matter that the boss had like 4 turns in a row because it was literaly impossible for him to do any sort of damage

what happened?

because of a mistake i gave 2 anti-dark items to those 2 other characters and BAM they were invincible

this game is so freaking stupid >:(

i hate the elemental thing you basically find in every rpg today. Fire, water, wind, earth, dark and light. HOw fucking hard is it to think of something NEW? Apparently it is impossible.

nah,they weren't going for megaten

it's pretty clear that the idea was to make a new final fantasy that was like final fantasy 3 which is why it uses quite a lot of plot element from previous final fantasy

they probably tought "OK WE HAVE CREATED AN OLD SCENARIO,HOW DO WE MAKE OLD GAMEPLAY?" "JUST ADD A JOB SYSTEM AND A BASIC ELEMENTAL SYSTEM" "DUDE YOU ARE A GENIUS!"

I'm surprised you're still playing magus.  I don't think I know anyone who finished the import.  Everyone played a bunch, said the game sucks, and bailed.

Everyone wants to be a megaten wannabe

Nothing wrong with that.

FF4 DS was inspired by megaten and that made it into the best version of the game.

EDIT: apparently the final dungeon is just a boss rush that you are forced to do with a jobless party... *facepalm*
