Facebook- when will it die?
« on: October 10, 2010, 05:35:52 PM »
I'd say 5 years when Gen Y is too busy procreating to bother about updating their 'life' online ala Borys. But that actually won't happen since attentionwhore parents will put their kid's awesome lives online to show off.

Man fuck this generation.

It has critical mass, so i dont foresee it really. People already spend more time on it than with email. But you never know

Multiple peeps I know that have never been in on the previous versions of this stuff are on FB, it's probably not going away anytime soon. I'm kind of over the whole 'look how interesting my life is!' blogorama thing at this point.

I think Facebook is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

It is the fastest, easiest, and most convenient social networking site out there.  MySpace ruined it by allowing people to trick out their pages, causing most top of the line PCs to slow to a halt loading up 70 sparklee.com images.

I logged into my MySpace profile recently and it wanted me to "upgrade" the profile. Its becoming more like facebook but still retaining its MySpace shittiness.

Don't have a facebook account. Never had one. Don't want one. Seems inherently silly to me.

That being said it seems very popular and its not going anywhere. Indeed at most just some other service will replace it in the future and everybody will just use that similar to what happened with myspace migration to facebook.

I made a Facebook account this year and rarely use it.  My wife got on earlier than I did, but got tired of it quickly and has completely stopped using it.

Current friends I either talk with on the phone, text, or e-mail.  Older friends/acquaintances will just become friends and then communication is incredibly rare.  When I log onto Facebook, I pretty much just see a shit-ton of posts from the same few people, usually sports-related, which consist of the score and "WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" or them being ticked off, or in a few peoples' cases, endless flirting with their significant other.  I used to get annoyed by all the stupid app stuff but I removed it (I don't give a fuck that you just checked in wherever via foursquare.  WHO CARES?), ditto on almost all the people/stuff I like, since that just led to endless amounts of spam.

I pretty much just like going on there and checking out new photos and such that people post every now and then.  Would much rather waste my time on message boards.

facebook will be around but I think people will give less of a shit about it when you know their real life does get busy and hence it will 'die off'.

I mean if you really think about it the people living awesome lives aren't on facebook taking 100 photos on a night out because they're too busy doing shit.

Facebook is for people you know in real life and don't like. Twitter is for people you don't know in real life but like.

The only thing that bugs me about Facebook is the seemingly constant shifting of relationship statuses and more frequent from certain friends of mine. Its like, somewhere in a modern teenagers to twenty year olds train of thought during a breakup or new relationship is that they'll have to change their status when they get home. That irks the shit out of me.

Interestingly, I rarely do status updates and set up my Facebook to automatically update to post things I'm doing on YouTube or Flickr. So, if I fav a video on YouTube, it'll post it up on FB (and its usually music videos I fav). Also when I upload new photos to my Flickr, it'll post a batch as a single post on my FB. Its a nice way to update everyone as to what I'm doing but I don't have to actually be on FB.

Facebook is basically an event aggregator for me. All my friends including me use it for party invites, meetups etc. Stalking photo collections is cool too. I log in about once a week if I haven't got any plans on the weekend and lookin for somethin to do. For that it's great. I hate sharing shit about my boring life on it though. I use the chat too, but I just have that integrated into my im client with gtalk etc so I don't need to log in for that... Facebook is good, it hopefully won't die. Makes organising things with large groups of friends so much easier.

really not the time to ask when it's going to die because it's about to get a gazillion times more popular with the movie.  No reason it shouldn't-- it's the best way to archive and show off yourself online.  imo, the only way it can die is if shoots itself in the foot somehow.

I had a "real me" account that had every single last person I had even the most tenuous connection to and my family was starting to add me.  Then I realized I had to edit myself on facebook like I do in real life with certain people.  School people I might have to network with and family were adding me.  I hated the idea of being so public.  When I went on to update, it was like I had to stop and think about whether I was going to piss someone off or come off poorly. or just get embarrassed by family when they start asking irl about certain updates.  I don't care what anyone says, if they have some mega account they use for networking/family/etc. with hundreds of friends, they have to do that and it sucks.

Or it doesn't suck for them because apparently it's a badge of honor/toughness to be completely open about every single last thing in life for lots of folks (except hating gays/black people, of course.)

So I deleted me, made a pseudonym, added my 40 closest friends and now I have a blast on there.
