Mario > Sonic

Bioware != Square Enix (not really comparable devs but I'd take Biowares output this gen over Squeenix any day)

Ewww, dragon age and star wars fanboy projects.

Everyone in this thread is wrong. Even classics like Sonic 2 are shit, so don't tell me Sonic 4 is even adequate. The only good sonic games are sonic3andknuckles and sonic 1.  Maybe if shallow trial and error gameplay injected with superfluous qte bullshit fills the void of your empty life then, sure, I see how you could pretend to like Unleashed or the Rush games.  Sonic Colors will be trash too.

Play more mario.

The truth hurts but this is real talk.

To be perfectly honest, the only good 2D mario's are the first(my fav <3), smb2 and NSMBW. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is great but I consider it a yoshi game.

Alright, not only are all 2D Sonic games utter shit even when compared to other platformers on the Genesis (Ristar is much better than pretty much every 2D Sonic combined) but your failure to mention Super Mario World pretty much discredits everything you have to say about platforming as a genre. Go fellate Huelen you closet furry.

The only Sonic game worth my time was Sonic Adventure. Assloads of content, gameplay variety and solid level design all working under a glorious soundtrack. The rest of the series is a joke, sorry.

SMB3 *is* overrated but so is Mario 64.

SMB1, World, Yoshi's Island, Sunshine and Galaxy are at the top. I have a soft spot for S2, 3, and 64 even though they're not all that great.

Sonic is similar. Although I have a soft spot for Sonic 2, it's not nearly as good as Sonic 1 or Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Sonic CD is a horribly average game. Haven't liked a Sonic game since Knuckles.

So ultimately Mario is the superior series even if people overstate its quality as a platformer more than a little too much. But when you've got a game like Galaxy or Yoshi's Island in your repertoire, you kinda deserve that much.

I feel Mega Man and Rocket Knight Adventures obliterate both. Series.

I agree with you, Himu, but SM64 isn't overrated. I dunno when you last played it, but there isn't a single 3D platformer that bests it, as far as I've played. I only just recently completed it, so this isn't nostalgia and as a whole I'm weary of the Mario series, I don't consider myself a fan.

SM64 doesn't have a single dull stage, where I have a hard time keeping track of them in Sunshine or Galaxy 2, since there are so fucking many. Even the underwater stages in 64 are a blast. I dare you to find a more consistently good 3D platformer.

FAKE EDIT: I feel it's worth it to mention the bulk of my experience with SM64 was the DS version, which I find improved pretty much everything from the original.

Get Galaxy 1.

I played Galaxy 2 about two months after Galaxy 1 and it's not nearly on the same footing. I beat Galaxy 1 in about 2 days, with over 80 stars. When I DID get 120 stars, I immediately started a new game and couldn't pull myself away from the tv for another hour even though I already played the same levels not much long before. It took me over a month and a half to get 120 stars in Galaxy 2 and I took it out of my wii after getting two green stars (post-game content).

Not nearly as good in any way.

I agree with Wrath on this one, from what I hear SMG2 is a lot better than 1 from pretty much every trusted source, and you yourself said G1 has bullshit motion control centric levels. I'll eventually nab it though, just outta curiosoty.

Galaxy 2 has the same motion control levels.

And most of those people only say that because the media says Galaxy 2 is better than Galaxy 1.

Evilbore's consensus is that Galaxy 2 is uninspired and not on the same footing as Galaxy 1 but still a great game.

Actually it was much, much better than Galaxy 1. For one thing it was actually fun.

This makes no sense. It's the same thing as Galaxy except with less unique level design and gameplay, it's far easier, recycles many concepts from the original, and is completely bloated for the sake of being "lengthy".

How anyone can say Mario Galaxy isn't fun while Galaxy 2 is a dissonance in my head.

SMG is definitely better than SMG2 in every area except MAYBE level design (and I question even that to a certain degree nowadays). So yeah, Himu's right on this one.

I gotta say, I'm pretty surprised that the praise for SMG2 is pretty much on par with SMG1, especially from the same posters and game 'journalists' that whine about games not taking enough risks.

The Sonic Fan Remix demo is out. It's basically two fans taking a shit on Sonic Team from 20,000 feet.

Grab it here. http://sonicfanremix.com/

Yeah, the color balance is a little noisy and the camera is centered on Sonic all the time, but still, holy fucking crap it's SO MUCH BETTER than Sonic 4.

Also, it uses Unity3D for godsakes  :lol

The fact that a Sonic fan game is able to do better than most Sonic Team crafted games, is really not THAT much of a surprise, honestly. I've had more remarkable experiences with Sonic playing demos like Retro Sonic and Sonic XD than any thing else that Sega has put out in the last decade. :lol

I mean honestly, when one of the HNICs of Sega/Sonic Team thinks that the only "bad" game that the series has ever seen in its history is SONIC CHAOS (Game Gear, Master System), you know something ain't right.  ;)

I'm gonna throw my opinions to the wind here and say that I don't like Sonic 4 for the same reasons that I don't like Heavy Rain.

Let me elaborate:

David Cage time and time again promised that Heavy Rain would be a moving, high quality interactive drama.  The final product failed to deliver that because the plot is so riddled with holes that it's impossible to take the drama seriously in hindsight.  For a drama of any kind to be successful, it needs to have a well written and believable story.

Similarly, Ken Balough stated in a Gamespot preview interview (that has since been taken down) that: "Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots."  As can be plainly seen by playing the demo of Sonic 4, this is ridiculously far from the truth.  A key part of that "2D roots" experience was the same physics system of the classic games and a system like that is simply no where to be found in Sonic 4.

Both of these elements (a credible and believable story with no holes and a traditional Sonic physics system) are core elements to the games that the developers allegedly wanted to produce so it really makes me wonder why they weren't included at all.  You can't promise to revolutionize or revamp something, screw it up, and still expect people to like what you've created.

At least that's how it should work. :S

I thought people were joking, but yeah, that short trial is better than what I've played of Sonic 4  :-\

but yeah, visuals are a bit too busy and distracting.
