I want to know how much money Sony sank into this game.

My guess is $70-80 million.

My guess is double that.

It was reported in 08 that it was at 60 mil, projected to be 80 by release. Bet they've blown that though.

And they couldn't set aside some money to get the Porsche license. :wtf

When you're dealing with car manufacturers and licensing rights, there are some lines you just can't cross. If Sony didn't get the Porsche license, it is probably because Porsche wouldn't play nice and get in bed like everyone else.

There's going to be a pecking order, sure, but in general if Ferrari wants $NNN amount of money, and Lamborghini wants $NNN+10%, that's not a problem, or even +20%, or some kind of guaranteed inclusion in the advertising, whatever. But if Porsche then comes back with a demand for $NNNx2, Sony has to worry not only about whether or not they pay that money, but that those terms leak out to the rest of the licensors, and how much damage control that will require, how much negotiation of contracts it will require in the next iteration of the game, etc. Hell, if Porsche was in the last one but won't be in this one, it may be because this kind of situation was revealed, and they're the ones who are butthurt.

It's a big, big can of worms, not just a matter of "give them whatever it costs."

Did Porsche have a special deal with Turn 10? I had no idea GT hadn't got the Porsche license. Anyway, lol at Turn 10. I love Forza 3 but some of their shit lately is straight bad business.

It's exceedingly unlikely that any car manufacturer would enter into any kind of exclusive agreement with any car game, regardless of the game's dominance within the market. Car companies are just insanely big, leviathans of the business world, and they have too many other licensing issues to consider.

For example, if Ford pays for product placement in the James Bond movie to have him drive their latest model, that becomes an advertising interest to them. If the licensed game-of-the-movie includes a driving sequence from the movie where Bond was driving that Ford, that car would need to be there as well; but if Ford had made an exclusive agreement to have Ford only appear in Forza that year, things become uncecessarily complicated.

I've also found it very, well, unfair in that "product placement" and "licensed appearance" are really the same thing, but they're exactly opposite in terms of payment: the weaker party is paying for presence. Ford must have paid serious money to have Bond drive that Ford in Casino Royale, but if Schmodunk Racing's S1GP wants to use Ford in their game, the publisher or developer is going to pay Ford for that right, even if the racers actually competing in that league are driving Fords. Even if they're driving a Ford that has been so heavily modified that its only remaining factory parts are not even visible, the licensing agreement is still required. Note: I'm only using Ford as an example; all car companies have largely similar policies.

Hell, depending on how poorly constructed the initial contract is, it's possible that the game-of-the-movie Bond game would need to pay additional money to Ford to use the car's likeness, as well as other contractual guarantees that the car won't be shown rolling, on fire, crushed, or otherwise damaged exceedingly, because Ford is worried about their image in the game -- even if those scenes happen in the movie, though the use of the car in the movie is also constrained by those separate contractual agreements.

Speaking to the new issue of PSM3 magazine in a must-read 10-page GT5 feature, Yamauchi said that frame-rate was a "major issue for us in GT5".

He added: "Our engineers complain every day: 'Isn't it enough that it's in 1080p? Does it have to be 60fps too?' But I think 60fps is very important, so we're working towards perfecting that. There might be times when you have a certain combination of conditions that come together - especially with the weather effects - [when] the game might briefly drop from 60fps, and for that I beg your forgiveness!
So the game is not 60fps,release date unknown, not 1080p btw...Japanese developers and their damage control :lol...just shut up

To my knowledge, Porsche has a special deal with EA, hence the Porsche representation in the Need for Speed series.

EA does hand out a sublicense to Turn 10, though. If EA can play nice with Turn 10, they can play nice with Polyphony.

This is just sad now.

My guess is $70-80 million.

It's been in development since what, 2005? It's gotta be way more than that. I mean, it's not like PD has been developing anything else aside from that one motorcycle game.

I'm not sure, maybe I confused the two. Naughty Dog seems happy with 30 fps Uncharted though.

December 31st is a Friday, which means it isn't coming out that day. Retailers showing a December 31st date just means it won't be out in 2010.
