Adopted a new gaming platform...
« on: October 16, 2010, 12:33:33 AM »
I've finally returned to PC gaming. It's been close to 4 years since I've touched a PC game, limiting myself to only Nintendo platforms, but I've felt I needed something more than what the Wii/DS could offer on their own.

The first game I've picked up is this baby:

Being a fan of the old school BG and IWD games, I couldn't resist. Right now, unfortunately, I'm stuck (perhaps someone can help me?) on the part where I have to clear the city of Denerim of mercenaries and rogues. Once I finish this bad boy, I plan on starting The Longest Journey. I have a soft spot for classic adventure games.

Can you guys recommend some PC games, particularly a fast-paced FPS that emphasizes more on one-player gameplay than online? I'm not big on multiplayer right now. I was thinking about picking up some of the modern combat first-person shooters, but they all seem to emphasize on online play.

PS: Thanks, Demi, for bringing me back.

You are going to have to be a little more specific. I can't remember that part off the top of my head.

It's one of the quests from the Charter Board. Upon entering Denerim for the first time, your party is asked to clear out of the mercenary scum from the city, and they're scattered across the map. I've been able to clear two of the groups, but there are two other that are damn near impossible to beat. I've tried to lure the closest enemy with an archer, but it seems to pull the entire gang on my party's head and I'm overwhelmed.

Oh I see. Well that's a little harder to give advice on especially since I don't know your party makeup and such. If its an optional quest, I would just level up a bit more and come back to it later.

Yeah, that part is really tricky, since they keep throwing more and more at you. Do like Stoney said and go do some other things for a while and level up a bit.

Hmm, never considered that the makeup of my party might have been the cause...

I have the main character (rogue), the other Grey Warden (Alistair), Sten (warrior), and Wynne (healer). I ditched the Mabari War Hound (for Sten) and Morrigan (for Wynne).

You want Morrigan man. Wizards are overpowered. Wynne for healing, Morrigin for attack. Alistar for tank. And your person for... well, your person. Focus on being an assassin for a rogue. The one that increases power for being two handed.

The Longest Journey is awesome.
Don't know if you like horror games. If you do, try out the Penumbra games and the recently released Amnesia. Those games are basically the only PC games I've played in the last couple of years. And Mass Effect 2, which is still my GOTY 2010.

I'd like to check out Fallout 3, too. Especially since it's one of the few games that takes place in D.C., which is where I am.

Is F.E.A.R. 1 still worth checking out? I can get it from STEAM along with Amnesia today if it is.

I loved FEAR 1. The AI is top notch and the gunplay is very satisfying. The level design and environments can be repetitive, but since the game is so fun to play I really didn't care.

Or, at least it was really good when I played it 4 or 5 years ago. Dunno how well it holds up today.

All right...

So FEAR 1, Condemned, and Amnesia to download today from STEAM.

Current Backlog
The Longest Journey
FEAR 1
Condemned: CO
Amnesia

I think that should hold me over for a while, especially as I've yet to complete Dragon Age.

I adopted ios gaming, which is still mostly bad. There are some fun games that suit the platform though. I love Tilt to Live and Flight Control. The popcap games translated pretty well too.

Make sure to play FEAR in the dark. During the talking scenes, always scan the background. Alma is everywhere.

Condemned is pretty tight for a game that was ported from a console.

I don't like the fact that you can't carry multiple weapons, but the stages are set up so that you get the weapons you need when you actually need them.
