Ys: Oath in Felghana PSP
« on: November 01, 2010, 08:41:26 PM »
Release: Tomorrow!  :hyper
Price: Standard/PSN - $29.99
         Premium - $39.99

After years of only being available on PC in Japan, Ys:OiF is finally getting an overseas release! It's my personal favorite entry of the series and has my favorite Ys soundtrack as well. While the character customization is not as deep as Ys 7, its combat has a more fast paced arcadiness to it and requires a good amount of hand and eye coordination. Hopefully the port of this turns out ok.

if you ordered it at Amazon, they dropped the price of the LE down to $29.82, a whopping 83 cent increase from the regular version.  it should apply automatically if you already had it ordered.  only problem seems to be the ship date is late november instead of today.  but I just ordered that version, so maybe the people who already had it got it at the regular time.

Just began playing around with this a bit. Here's some quick impressions:

- 5 difficulties unlocked from start (ulike the PC where you had to beat the game to unlock them)
- Lots of options including one to turn off voices and change between 3 music styles
- Oh god the voices! Off you go.
- Holding 'O' speeds through the cutscenes
- Game loads super quick (UMD) in fact I haven't noticed any game loading so far
- Blood and gibs are still there
- Game looks decent on PSP though sprites are a little on the soft side

7 is great if you skip all the story and sidequests and speed run it as an action game ala, Oath.  I finished it in 14 hours (vs. most people's 25-30) and it was non-stop intense action.  So good :)

First dungeon is the most mashy. Past that things start to get more varied especialy later on when they start to incorporate more platforming bits.

No, you're right.  The main difference between Ys Oath/Origin (And maybe 6) vs. Ys Seven is that the enemies are a threat in earlier Ys, but in Ys Seven they are just grunts there to give you loot.  So earlier Ys games are thrilling "make it to the next checkpoint" affairs and Ys Seven is more like "lemme explore this dungeon and get my loot on".  But then the boss fights in Ys Seven were awesome and challenging so it didn't bother me that much.  But I agree the earlier Ys with threatening enemies is better.

Anyone want an Ys special edition case, soundtrack cd and calendar unopened and sealed (well except the case that is) for free? Includes everything but the game.

I don't need this stupid special edition bullshit. That crap takes up too much shelf space for crap I don't care about nor need. It was the only copy they had.

mmm this definitely feel closer to ys 6,you jump to dodge stuff, there is no awfull party to switch around and you even shot fireball out of your ass

the controls feel a little stiff... there were times where i pressed O and adolf decided to not jump and getting hit anyway :-\ maybe it's just my psp showing it's age...

i'm not convinced but i'm definitely going to give this a bigger chance than the one i gave at 7

I really enjoyed it but if you were to choose between Ys 7 and Felghana go with Felghana. Ys 7 felt like a Diablo-fied Ys game where as Felghana is more Zelda-like.

So Ys 7 is no good?

I really liked it.  Good looking and tons of fun.  A++ soundtrack too.  I didn't even think the story was bad, it was just simple and 16-bit nostalgic.  The game is not as good as Oath but it's still a better arpg than 90% of them.  It just happens that Oath is basically the best arpg there is, so it's tough to compare.

after you finish the 2nd dungeon you get an item that makes you run faster and another one that let you warp between save point's as you want... they should have give you these a lot sooner

anyway this is a lot cooler than 7,you explore a dungeon and you find a new sword and that new sword kicks ass! compare that to 7 where you open a chest and there are 10 bones that maybe you will be able to turn into a slightly better sword after you get 5 other iron ore from digging around :yuck

personaly i have heard a lot of people saying how awesome y's music but i don't really like it that much

I like how there are control issues for the very first major boss in the game. Had to rebind jump to R. I'm not even sure how it's possible to kill that boss with the default bindings. :|

Fun game so far other than that.

Also the art is super generic. Almost as generic as Type-Moon stuff.

Ys art always sucks.  They need to get it on par with the quality of the music and gameplay one of these days.  Needs a P3 style makeover visually.

Pretty good for a harem rpg.

The demon lady at the end of the first dungeon. You have to charge magic (hold square) and jump over her wave attacks at the same time (circle).

And yeah the music is awesome. Taking a break for now though because there's nothing that cramps my hands faster than a PSP.

I don't remember there being control issues but then I played it on a PS2 controller and I just played Ys Origin (should be same controls) on X360 controller.

The controls for Origin on a X360 control were:
A - slash
Y - magic, hold for charge
B - jump
X - burst mode (not in Oath)
L/R - cycle magic

So you could hold Y while jumping  or slash with A while jumping.

Can you make the PSP controls like that?

yes you can but the default configuration is

X - Attack
O - Jump
/\ - Burst
[] - Magic

so if you want to jump and cast magic at the same time, you have to press both O and [] which is awkward

Mashing square does 2 damage per fireball on a boss that has 600 hp. And you get like 10 fireballs before you have to wait for it to recharge. So it is possible to beat her that way, but you can't charge your magic and it will take forever.

Fighting the boss like this with the default controls is basically impossible:

It's not even a big deal, it's just... I don't see how they could have playtested the game for more than 10 minutes without noticing this flaw.

The secret to that boss battle is going into hyper mode or whatever. Think of them as "turns". Each Hyper Mode fireball onslaught takes out about 80 hp at the right level.

Yeah, or you could lay the system flat on your lap and use your index and middle finger to hit the buttons, but it's still extremely clumsy. It's just bad button mapping.

Sometimes having to play stuff unconventionally is fine if there's simply no better way to go about it, like having to use a claw hand with Monster Hunter. Fixing the problem with Ys just involves swapping two buttons.

Right before the boss there's a path you can climb that has a translucent chest at the end. You have to light the torch on the wall for it to appear, inside it is the ruby that lets you charge.

Nah, they all have patterns and attacks that leave them open once they miss. You just need to pick your shots. I'd say the bosses have been pretty  great so far. Just got done with the first one in the abandoned mine.

Been playing this as I watch the SoCal Regionals. I started skipping all of the story sequences because it's just generic fantasy pap that couldn't be any less interesting. Just send me to the next dungeon plz.
