Nah, they all have patterns and attacks that leave them open once they miss
the boss i'm fighting now occasionaly decide to put up a barrier and making it explode whenever i'm attacking him even when he's open... that's really lame!

but anyway iconoclast is right, the plot is so cliched that i went like

"now this is going to happen"
*stuff happens like i tought it would happen*

You mean the first Chester battle? Don't attack him when he puts up his barrier, wait until after he uses his lance dash attack and attack him quickly after. If he runs at you for a slash attack, wait until he finishes his combo and hit him twice before he starts up another combo.

Here's somebody doing this on Inferno difficulty with a low level character:

Japan is anti-blood/gore these last 10 years.  Ys PC gets away with it because PC is niche and no one cares what's in PC games in Japan.  I mean half of them feature tentacle porn.

actualy i was having problem with the second fight... i upgraded my equipment and it was twice as easy... i didn't expect 4 points to make such a huge difference

you know one thing i realized is how the extra air time you can get from the wind spell is reaaaaaaallllllyyyyyy usefull

EDIT: i finished the game, funny enough i got killed at least once in every boss fight but the last one went down on my first try :lol

mmm... what can i say,i wouldn't call it the greatest ARPG ever but it was OK,the boss fight are nice but the dungeons are still a little dull and the monsters could surely get an improvement... fighting pixelated crabs and insects is no fun

Still loving it. Wouldn't call it greatest action rpg ever either, but it's been a while since I played an action rpg this good (bar Demon's Souls).

Finally getting around to playing this.  Two things:

This is considerably more difficult than Ys 7.  That was "slash-roll-counter-slashslashlsahpowerslash" this is still a lot of slashing, with jumping and meaningful magic, and then more pattern/puzzle based bosses.  Even when I figure out the pattern, I'm still getting rumped by them.  I'm at a bird thing that shoots fire and die in like two seconds and have no idea why.

This game is so good.  I liked it more than Ys 7 and I already liked that a lot.  I wish I played it on the PC, tbh, but whatever, maybe Falcom will eventually put these games on steam or something.  I want to play Origins and Ys 6 now if they're more of the same.

Yeah, Oath is the best.

Ys Origins is Oath as a pure dungeon crawler.  It's based off the Oath battle system.  You're in a tower and you climb it and fight stuff.  There are bosses, platforming, puzzles, upgrades and it's really fast.  The downside is there is an unskippable hour intro of talk/talk/talk at the start.  Then only occasional short cutscenes throughout.  I'd recommend it for sure.

I haven't played 6, but I heard it's like Oath/Origins but a lot shittier because it came out before them and the battle system isn't as good.

I'm fine with Origins being a pure dungeon crawler.  Honestly I couldn't tell the difference between the story of Oath and 7.  Blah blah magic ultimate evil whatever SLASH SLASHSLASH.  I still like going around in town and all that, and Oath had pretty incredible pacing (Ys 7 sometimes felt like you were just slogging through enemies over and over; Oath is a lot more balanced with better standard enemies and frequent bosses, as well as basic platforming and puzzles).

I don't even know how you'd even buy Origins or the PC versions of these games.  I really wish more Japanese PC game makers would jump on any of the DD services.

I need to read more about Ys 1&2 PSP before I buy it.  The combat sounds...unique with the shoulder checking or whatever.

Origins has really good pacing like Oath.  It's maybe 8-10 hours long and there are 3 characters that have completely different moves/magics if you want to replay it.

If you actually want to pay real money and buy it, you can order straight from Falcom in english.  They're really cool about overseas orders.

It's not like the story matters...at all.  I just played Origins like 3 months ago and I couldn't tell you anything about the plot if you asked.  All the Ys plots are forgettable.

Here's the page for Origins: http://www.falcom.co.jp/mailorder/catalog/936.html

And here's their instructions for international orders: http://www.falcom.co.jp/mailorder/attention/howto.html

cool, thanks.  I might find a copy of Ys 6 PSP first.  From what I heard, it is a bad port, but the worst aspects of it like the long loading aren't an issue if you run it of the memory stick.

So far the Ys series has been kicking as.  Ys Oath is one of the best action rpgs I have played.

YS Origins for PC is free for a brief time.  Info is in that thread but the deal was supposedly only for April 28th, but it still works.  Tried it out and it works.  All in unskippable Japanese, though.  No fan translation either.

Once you get past the hour unskippable intro, the game has almost no cutscenes and is totally playable and awesome.

Just have a pet keep tapping the next button for an hour.
