Quincy Jones was the musical talent. Prince was a one man band.

When it comes to actual musical talent? Prince by a long shot. When it comes to showmanship and influence? Michael Jackson. I voted for the former.

Gotta go with MJ.  As someone said, raw musical talent will go to Prince but MJ's music is more accessible and with MJ's showmanship, it blows Prince out of the water IMO.  But I guess to follow my opinion you have to be a fan of MJ's personal style in addition to his music, where most people just like his music and think he's a fucking weirdo.  But I loved his weird shit :)

Prince. Not even up for debate. Prince wins every time.

Prince, totally.  I wish he hadn't found Jesus or whatever and still made dirty music, because that was some of his best stuff.
Yes sir. Him becoming a jehovah's witness or whatever the hell he is ruined it. But Prince at his prime? That guy ran circles around MJ.

Jackson was a top notch showman but Prince was just a far more talented musician.

Finding religion has little to do with Prince shitting the bed. He fell off, like musicians tend to do around the time he did. Musicology is good though

Back on topic though, has anyone listened to the new MJ song?

http://www.michaeljackson.com/us/news/new-michael-jackson-song-breaking-news

Man, it really DOESN'T sound like him.  I won't go so far as to say it isn't.  He reinvented himself tons of times and sounds completely different on Dangerous than Off The Wall or something.  But man, it sounds strange.

Edit: and on top of strange, the song is bad.

Not the good bad either.  it's just bad.

MJ is really about nostalgia, when he made awesome catchy pop when you were a kid. Prince has a range of work that you can appreciate on a deeper level as a grown ass man.

I think Miley Cyrus has probably been gang banged.

This is the best way of putting it ever. :bow
Jackson is mostly about nostalgia. Prince works better as you grow older.

Plus did MJ ever dress up as some weird Joker/Two-Face hybrid for a music video? NOPE

No doubt, you want to get anybody dancing just play Billie Jean. But at the end of the day MJ is the quintessential pop artist. Prince is something more, I think.

Agreed. When an MJ song comes on I can't help but dance, and the guy could move, for sure.

However, I still find more substance in Prince's music.

Well Billie Jean is my favorite song of all time, and I'd argue its not just a good song to dance to. I like Prince, but I always find his work to either be caught in 80's sound and ideals or too experimental for its own good. For example I never really cared for Purple Rain.
This.

I love Purple Rain actually, but I think that's nostalgia for me because when I was a kid my mom played it all the time and I saw the movie a lot.  But Prince sounds outdated to me now.  Most of MJ's songs, especially the hits, sound timeless.

MJ was a great communicator so I just don't want to say he made good party music, he made good ballads as well. I mean maybe musically speaking I have a nostalgia for the 80's sound. I prefer Off the Wall to Thriller for instance.

I never grew up with Prince so I found him later, maybe that's behind my thinking.

The only track I consider filler on Bad is Just Good Friends.  But Thriller is a perfect album IMO.  They're all good.  But 10 songs on Bad are great, not just good.

I can't recall where I read it, but Prince didn't just write and produce the Morris Day and the Time work, he performed everything but the singing. Here is the wikistuff:
Quote
The band went on to release four albums (mostly performed by Prince + singer Morris Day alone) during the course of their main career, each a solid slice of jammy, rock-infused 80s funk, generally light and humorous in tone, strongly influenced by Parliament - and, of course, Prince. Although they scored numerous hits (including "The Bird", "Jungle Love", "777-9311", "Get It Up", "Gigolos Get Lonely Too", "The Walk" and "Cool", mostly on the R&B charts) during the early 1980s, they never approached superstardom.[1] But as good as they were, they weren't allowed to play a note on their debut album. Prince recorded all the music himself, crediting the production to Jamie Starr and Morris Day, who at least was allowed to sing on the record, but was forced to follow Prince's guide vocals note-for-note.

Just heard the new MJ single, pretty mediocre. My theory with unreleased music is that they were not released for a reason, so I'm not surprised.
mediocre is putting it nicely.  I thought it was terrible.  I hope the rest is better because I honestly don't expect execs and people at Sony to know what makes a good MJ song.
