PEPPERO DAY
« on: November 09, 2010, 06:34:15 AM »
Pepero Day is an observance in South Korea similar to Valentine's Day. It is named after the Korean snack Pepero and held on November 11, since the date "11/11" resembles four sticks of Pepero.[3][4] The holiday is observed mostly by young people and couples, who exchange Pepero sticks, other candies, and romantic gifts. Lotte denies starting the holiday and instead states that they noticed a bump in Pepero sales around November 11th and after continued popularity they decided to then encourage the holiday with special gift boxes and other promotions.[2] Some consider it to be a contrived holiday and some teachers have encouraged children to exchange healthy snacks to help combat obesity. An alternative "Garaetteok Day" - sticks of white tteok - has been proposed in its stead.[5]

According to one story, Pepero Day was started in 1994 by students at a girls' middle school in Busan, where they exchanged Pepero sticks as gifts to wish one another to grow "as tall and slender as a Pepero".[6]

In Japan, a similar Pocky Day was started however it has failed to gain traction.[2]

Flavors

As of 2007, it was sold in 10 different flavors:

    * Regular or Chocolate
    * Strawberry-flavored
    * Almond Chocolate
    * Nude (chocolate in the center)
    * Nude Lemon Cheese
    * Cocoa
    * Soft
    * Cheese
    * "Woman in White" and "Man in Black" are slightly more "classy" brands of Pepero, and both have chocolate cookie bits scattered throughout the chocolate dip.
    * Topic, a style similar to Japanese Toppo, also manufactured by Lotte.

Yeah, it's just Pocky, but don't ever suggest to a Korean that their amazing candy (probably invented by King Sejong the Great himself, if only as a product to test out the script of the world's most beautiful and scientific alphabet, Hangul) is a derivative of a Japanese product.

The Peppero in the green boxes is best.

Hah YES. If you're like, "Uh, isn't this just POCKY?" they either feign ignorance of Pocky or they go "Yes, but this is KOREAN Pocky!" which is what they do everytime they comitt blatant IP theft. Lotte World has lifted it's theming and logo from Disney World, but if you point it out they say "Ah, yes, but KOREAN Disney!"

Korea seems like something from 1984 even down to the epitome of manufactured music like Girl's Generation. Which is still fucking awesome.

If we start trying in May, I've got until February 2012 at the earliest when awesome fun time slows down for a while.

Nah you can still have fun, men are quite useless from conception to about 1-2 years old. It's just that you have to 'be there' to prove you care.

Well yeah, you can have fun, but it's a constant balancing act between family, work, and social life from that point on. If everything is working right, no-one is ever completely happy with you.

I like having fun WITH my wife. We have weekly date nights where we go out. We both know that this won't happen as often once a kiddo is in the picture.

I've had a proper date-style lunch with my wife ONCE since my daughter was born. And we only have one of the things!

I'm doing the same. We must be doing it in counterpoint, or the sympathetic vibrations would induce an earthquake.

I had a conversation with a girl from Korea once, and she was trying to explain Valentines Day and White Day to me. She was not happy when I responded with "So you guys do the same thing that Japan does?"

Yeah. Be sure to point out the similarity in the girl- and boy-bands as well next time. And ask which term came first, "J-pop" or "K-pop"... and then ask them about who had the first economy built on industrialized manufacturing and export.

I frequently wonder why Americans and Japanese don't really have a huge, culture-wide problem with each other, despite being in that big war against each other. Then I remember that the USA wasn't invaded, subjugated, and had to be freed by others, the same way Korea was. And of course there was plenty of invasion history prior to that.

Um... HAPPY PEPPERO DAY! 10/11/11 never forget!
