In honor of GT5 finally being released, I played Gran Turismo 1 on my PC with an Xbox360 controller. It was boring, so I shut it off after the first race.

OK dooderslices

I have some questions:

1. How do I get custom soundtracks, the elevator music is murdering my eardrums
2. What is the best affordable wheel out there for the PS3
3. How do I turn on 720p mode? Game is well playable in 1080p mode but the performance during replays is stinnnnky.

Did a round on Fuji Speedway with the Tesla. Awesome awesome. Will delve into A Spec Mode later, arcade mode is where I am going to get my jollies for now.

Yeah, AFAIK the old Fit/Jazz is in it, the one that kind of looks like a mutant bug:

So weird that the new one isn't in, especially considering how ridiculously popular it is in Japan right now (Forza 3 has it!).

It literally took +1 minute to exit from the Museum screen to the GT Life menu. Is this a result of network congestion? WTF is wrong with this game

1.  No idea, does the game support it?  Yeah the music is awfullll
2.  I think Amazon has the main force-feedback GT wheel for 33% off so $99; I'm using the GT4 version of it which still works on GT5 since it's USB
3.  You need to go to your system settings before you start the game and disable 1080p/1080i.

It literally took +1 minute to exit from the Museum screen to the GT Life menu. Is this a result of network congestion? WTF is wrong with this game

Same thing when I tried photo travel and photo album and all that.  The menu sluggishness is horrible.

btw, where is the optional 2nd install?

It's so odd.  The damage model is fine.  But until you hit lvl.20 it's turned off and that's going to take what, 10 hours?

I mean I sort of understand where they are coming from: they want you to not have to deal with the difficulty of real damage early on when you're a newbie driver and then when you've gotten some real experience under your belt you unlock the real driving experience.

At the same time there should have been an option to just turn it on from the start for people who want the extra challenge/realism.  I feel like I'd have a lot more fun playing GT with everything actually functioning in the game, but I dunno if I'll play it enough to even get there.

OK thanks a ton. Too bad the Forza wheel doesn't work with ps3, tee hee

I managed to do some sort of secondary install through the options menu.

Regarding custom soundtracks, under the Audio menu there's a "Personal BGM" but it only lets me add a single track.

The interface for this game is an abortion.

It was actually the opposite with me, I would have loved to play Forza 3 with a wheel, but since I already had my GT4 wheel which worked on all PC/PS3 racers I couldn't justify getting another wheel that would only work on the couple of X360 racers.  So I ended up playing Forza 2/3 with a controller.

I really wish MS would allow 3rd party Logitech wheels to work on their system.

I'd thought the damage was only cosmetic...

I have no idea and probably never will since I doubt I'll unlock damage :(

Do all 200 cars even have damage?

I'd assume so, but since it's GT5...who knows.

I didn't really notice any tearing when I played yesterday, but I was playing in 720p.  I did notice slowdown on the night track for sure.  Seemed like 40-50fps.

So after a long conversation with a friend at thanksgiving dinner about GT5, he convinced me that it's possible GT5 is actually a really great game with just some annoying flaws so tomorrow I will give the game another chance, going in with an open mind and ready to find this masterpiece of a game hidden somewhere.

My question is, will PD actually bother patching this to make it better? Japanese companies, as a rule, don't give two shits about products once they're out the door

This is the one thing that gives me hope.  GT team is huge on patching and improving their games.  Prologue was continually patched from being a mess to being a pretty good game.  After GT5 came out yesterday and the western press tore it a new one, Kaz/Sony instantly responded with "we were already working on some major patches to fix all these issues being mentioned by US press (having to level for damage, tearing, crappy menu, network interference, etc...) but because we are getting slammed in reviews we are putting these patches on the speed train and will have some out very very soon so the game will be good.  Please trust us".

So apparently there will be a patch pretty soon changing some major things and then later on more patches improving the game engine/presentation/etc...

Good chance it will be a lot more complete a year from now.  What's stupid is if they had gotten real feedback from the west a year ago, they could've fixed all these things before releasing the game in the first place.

It's cool that they're patching it, but idiotic that after six years of development the game's as bad as an Obsidian title at launch.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-25-gt5-update-confirmed-for-saturday

Quote
"We received a lot of demands for having more regulations placed on the online play. We're going to perform an update on the 27th that will include things like max power restrictions and weight restrictions," Yamauchi said.

"It's like a living creature, dynamically growing as we speak."

According to Yamauchi, the update will "refine the usability of the game to make it a better experience.

"I think it's going to be hard to find an end to that process," he admitted.

:lol

Quote
The high demand coupled with GT5's constant communication with the internet is causing all sorts of problems that spill over even into single-player races.

Sony's temporary solution? Disable your PS3 internet connection.

"Yesterday the online service was kind of in a critical state," Yamauchi said.

"The data centre was set up to handle 500,000 connections but the number of connections we received greatly exceeded that amount and there was a high chance of experiencing problems as a result.

"The design of the GT game really integrates the online and offline parts. So the problems online actually affected the offline play as well. Right now we've changed the number of simultaneous connections that are possible to one million, doubling the number, and we're trying to gauge what will happen, but we don't know at this point in time."

Only 500k connections? Do they have any idea of what happens outside Japan? Only allowing 1million simultaneous connections worldwide is their solution?

Here's a guess, Kaz: As more people buy your popular game, the amount of online activity is likely to increase! Did they even look at their sales figures for GT5P?

In other words, it'll be months before the game is anywhere near tollerable.

And if you wait and buy until they fix it, can you imagine how long it'll take to download and install all the updates not to mention the hour long install the game already has?  If you buy GT5 like 6 months from now it'll probably take 3 hours of downloads and installs before you can even get to the fucking game. :/

Sony was going to delay it until 2011.  Might explain why some parts of the game are so sloppily done.

I still remember trying to play it at a friends house.  We started to play, saw it had to download patches, left to get some food, came back and the shit was still patching.  That's when you cancel it and don't bother playing anymore.  At least they should let you download the patches on your computer and put them on a usb stick.

pre-xbox launch Sony fanboy noise : "LOL, a HARDDISK in a console?! Welcome to installs and games released that aren't even finished and, ugh... patches"

Pretty funny how that all shook down given Sony have been the ones who have fell into all the pitfalls that the XBox was apparently running full steam into, and even funnier that the no. 1 Sony franchise is going to be the poster boy for the complaints.

And again - they delayed the game once last year - at which points did all these issues sail past anyones gaze?

hey now, I remember xbox peoples laughing at ps3 games installing games only to accept that shit with open assholes when new xbox dash dropped.

oh wait, optional installs versus mandatory ones.  lol ps3 lol

Considering that GT5 will probably hit well over $100 million when it is all said and done, if it didn't sell millions of copies, I imagine a lot of SCE executives would have to pursue opportunities elsewhere.  The game probably has to sell about 8-10 million to break even.

From beyond3d

Quote
It is very low post-processing resolution. IIRC 1/16th framebuffer res and possibly lower-res. That means rain effects, smoke, dust will make foreground objects alias badly which brings the memories back to C64 era in this case. I assume it wont be as pronounced in replay (30fps) as in ingame racing and photomode probably does 1:1 post-processing buffer res.
