That was a actually a good review.  Pretty fair and not too harsh.

Hopefully after a few patches GT5 will be more of an 8/10 game than a 7/10 one.  But there's no way it'll be a great AAA 10/10 title ever.  And unless there's a DMC2->DMC3, I don't see GT6 being any better.

At this point if Forza can improve their lighting engine, their handling, and make the game less grindy boring as well as including more and better looking tracks, Forza 4 could be the king of sim racers like GT was during the PS2 era.  Forza 3 is a good step in the right direction and way better than Forza 1/2, but it still needs at least one more upgrade to be what GT was at its best.  I'd like to see Bizarre get picked up by MS and work with Turn 10 on Forza 4.  Adding things like Kudos combo chaining events and a varied single player mode like PGR would make it a much better game.

Agree that there is a ton of potential there but I seriously doubt that will ever happen. Just imagine how much they'd trip over each other.

one really smart thing they did with Forza 3 is letting you enter drift mode anytime you want using the d-pad (iirc).  It wasn't at the level of PGR, but it was still cool to just pull it up and start getting points for drifting around.

If Bizarre does work with Turn 10 in this hypothetical situation, I think they need to help Turn 10 with adding a bit of style and class into their game.  Just compare the 458 Italia trailers from both PD and Turn10.  It's a minor thing and Forza 3 was a huge step up from Forza 2, but in general, the Forza games have a weird way of presenting cars.  Bizarre was pretty much amazing at making cars seem awesome, so yeah.  Though, that one Forza 3 video from last E3 (I think) with the choreographed drifting cars and all that was alright.  A bit tacky, but alright.

My main problem with F3 is the career mode was a grind.  Too many laps per race, too many events with the same tracks over and over before progressing to new ones, everything to plain and sterile.  Yeah, I think style is something that would help them.  They should split the game into 2 parts, arcade career and sim career.  Sim career can be how it is, but arcade career can be like an arcade racer built for the ADD crowd.  2-3 lap races, constant new track influx, lots of event types, and more flash.

I don't see how GT has ever been any different. If anything Forza 3's career is much better than Forza 2.

Forza's problem is too few/shitty tracks, and that they are repeated WAY too much in the career. Out of the entire list, I only enjoy driving on two of them, three at a stretch.

Not gonna get solved 'til they get a bigger budget, or do way more outsourcing. Given their sales, they're likely gonna go the route of gradual accumulation over multiple games by reusing stuff we're bored with already. Annoying but I can't see a way around it.

They should annihilate some of the incredibly bad tracks to make room for some less hateful stuff. All the fantasy tracks need to be shitbinned.

I thought it was disc space. Isn't there stuff in 1 and 2 that didn't even make it into 3?

Disk space may be a factor but it's mostly manhours, I bet. Plus, it can't be fun re-doing all that shit in a slightly different engine, no matter how much fans howl for inclusion of their faves. And they'd get killed in the reviews if say 90% of the tracks were retreads. Let's ask Che!

I've heard that the tracks get a lot (a lotta lotta lot) of hand tuning. As in, the track gets completely made, and then they find spots where the framerate tanks, and go back and trim polygons until it works. And it was implied that this happens repeatedly during the dev process; apparently they've never heard of a finalized graphics budget.

GT5 outdone by NFS...again.

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/30/shift-2-unleashed-preview/
Quote
I recently played around with the game, if all-too-briefly. Shift 2 is still months away from its planned release next spring, but the standout addition, a new "helmet cam" view, was fully functional -- and something I think racing fans will be wowed by -- in the preview build. Evolving from the driver's eye camera system in the first Shift, the new camera view not only realistically recreates the effects of g-forces, bumps, crashes, acceleration and braking from an in-car perspective, but now integrates the portions of the helmet that you'd see (if you were a real, careful race car driver) and, most importantly, the camera now looks into turns, just as drivers do in real life.

What sounds like a neat gimmick proved to be a potential game-changer during the two races I competed in. The helmet cam shifted to always focus on the apex of a turn as I went into it -- essentially, an automated head-tracking system!

Might as well post this here - is it still hard to get the newer Forza 3 Ultimate Edition, nowhere seems to have it and it sounds like it's a "soft rollout" as the old stock clears and it will replace it as a platinum/best hits whatever MS calls that.

"GT5 is pretty amazing considering that it was only developed in a year! That really explains why it feels really rough around the edges and has some technical issues. Those guys at PD are great though, cranking out something this good in such a short amount of time. Sony really should have given them another year or so to really polish it up. Luckily they'll be working on patches and the like so, really, it's like they're actually GETTING an extra year!"
