It was shit. I seem to be the only fucker alive who has only played MGS games for gameplay. Jesus Christ. The stories and characters are funny in a cheesy way and I enjoyed them in MGS1-3, but in MGS4 it is unbearable. The gameplay in that game is trash.

I borrowed my brother's PS 3 one time and played through like half of it and I really enjoyed what I played. So I'm always a little surprised at the negative reaction this game seems to generate on some forums. Although like I said, I only played half of it.

The first half is solid MGS-fare. It's chapter 3 and beyond where the game gets offensive.

The second half of that game is like 3/4ths cutscenes and some of the most goofball shit ever. Apparently if you're super hardcore MGS fan then it's the best thing ever, but the majority of that crap was going over my head.

The thing MGS2 is that it didn't take itself seriously. I mean, there's a part where Raiden sneaks about butt naked. It was total cheese and camp and it was fine with that. whereas MGS4 completely does and tries its hardest to validate its existence and tug the players heart strings. MGS2 had a lot of story, but it had 10x as much gameplay to back it up. I can't say the same for MGS4.

Any game that forces that much crap down my throat is taking itself seriously. This is regarding MGS 2. But I get your point. I've heard some of the cutscenes in MGS 4 are insanely long. When a game devolves that much into cutscenes then that person should probably be making a movie instead of an interactive videogame.

No western game has cutscenes the length of the Metal Gear Series. Few have them the length of Final Fantasy or some of the other RPG's. And even worse generally the Japanese simply don't understand pacing in them. I'm certainly not saying typical American games have great cutscenes. But very few of them tend to stretch them out.

I agree with that, but it's not really a Japanese problem but more of a Kojima problem. I didn't find the cutscenes overly long in MGS1-3 (I seem to be an exception?) but MGS4 was ridiculous. The second half most is nothing but cutscenes, I'm not kidding.

Chapter 2 - Great
Chapter 3 - misunderstood.
Chapter 4 - successfully pulls heart strings.
Chapter 5 - great

Overall - Best game of 2008. Not Best MGS game.

The MGS series is about half gameplay and half cutscenes. It's not comparable to Rockstar games where the there's frequent but short cutscenes before missions and where they at least are good at establishing a certain mood or period. Plus Rockstar at least puts decent acting and writing into their cutscenes. Like Red Dead Revolver is a great game but if you played it without paying attention to the story then it seems like a sub-par action game.

speed runs, dog tag runs, hard mode runs, extreme mode runs, frog runs, no kill runs, no alert runs...MGS games are meant to be replayed over and over and over and over. They have extensive replay value. The only time anyone watches all the cutscenes in an MGS game is the first time. After that, it's quite normal to skip every scene on each subsequent replay.

The only people who EVER complain about cutscenes in an MGS game are people who only play them once and put them aside.

However, MGS4 is chock full of cutscenes. Skipping the cutscenes reveals just how barebones the actual game content post-chapter 2 is. Still the first MGS I have never sucessfully replayed. I should try a speed run some day.

himu gets it. mgs games at their core are great because the core gameplay is fantastic and the level design is perfection. easily top-tier as far as awesome games to speedrun go.

speed runs in mgs4 suck tw and are NOT worth it. chapter 3 alone will make you want to kill yourself; if not for the staling sequence then from trying to no-kill the chase section. the load times and installation screens will make sure to kill any adrenaline high you might get from flawlessly running through an area, too

I tried to do a no-kill run and stopped when I couldn't get past the armored vehicle chase part in Chapter 2? I kept killing one person somewhere in that chapter despite my greatest efforts and it pissed me off very much.

Haha. Yeah it's like what I mentioned in the thread, the Stalker chase in chapter 3 is good the first time, but if you were speed running that it would be annoying as fuck. There's no quick way to speedrun that location.

jumping in a platform requires precision,memorization just trial and error (heck do i even need that? both mgs and mgs2 has an awesome radar that tells me where is everyone and how far i can be before they see me so...)

beside's i'm not sure how trying to go for a perfect game would make the game more fun,if anything it would make it annoying and/or frustating so feh ¯\(-_-)/¯

You know Kojima is gonna make a MG5 for PS4 Xbox 720 and that shit better not have the obnoxious technical bullshit in MGS4 (like obscene load times and small stage areas). MGS4, to me, felt like some sort of experiment for a better game or like what Radical Dreamers is to Chrono Trigger (in regards to tying up loose ends). The lack of gameplay killed it for me.

And I'm still wondering where the VR Missions are SMH
