2010 Thanksgiving (or Thanksreceiving)
« on: November 21, 2010, 01:51:19 PM »
I'm having everybody over to our house again this year. Leaving now to go to the store with menu in hand. Am I missing anything?

  • Turkey ( ::) duh)
  • Ham
  • Broccoli Cheese Casserole
  • Green Bean Casserole
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Stuffing
  • Corn
  • Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Rolls
  • Corn Cake (Kind of like corn muffins only super rich and moist)
  • Cheeseburger Dip
  • Spinach Artichoke Dip
  • Banana Cream Pie
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Gooey Butter Cake
  • Cupcakes

It seriously feels like I'm forgetting something more important than the turkey.  :(

What are you guys doing for Thanksgiving? :hyper

They look really pretty if you use a cake decorator.

It's up to spousey now. I can make them the evening before and put them in the fridge (if we have room). But that means a bunch more shit we have to buy and more time at the store and more time in the kitchen the night before. He's the one who wanted to do Thanksgiving, and now he's realizing that GT5 is coming out this week and he's made a huge mistake.

What I use:

1 dozen hard cooked egg yolks
1 tbsp vinegar
1 tbsp brown mustard
Mayonnaise (this is an eyeball thing, I just add until it reaches the desired consistency, I like my deviled eggs kind of firm so I don't add a lot)
1 can of ham (like the kind you'd use in ham salad) drained, and flaked
- for the onions, I take half a shot glass full of dried minced onions and fill it the rest of the way with water, leave it in the fridge for 15 mins and it reconstitutes, then you can just dump it in the mix and don't have to worry about messing up shit by chopping onions (plus i kind of like the flavor)

mix it all, stuff the hardcooked egg whites, sprinkle paprika on the tops, put the tray(s) in the fridge for a half hour, done

I'll use lots of paprika though, because I LOVE FUCKING PAPRIKA!

I can't explain it, but it's like my favorite. I probably won't even eat these things, but I'll put paprika on them for good measure. And on almost everything else I cook for the day.

You're missing Blended Pear Salad (aka Green Stuff) and Ham Balls.

I don't know what that is, and I'm scared to google. If it's not a steak, I'm probably not going to consume it.

What Green Stuff or Ham Balls?

Green Stuff is blended canned pears, whipped cream, lemon jello and green food coloring. It's one of my wife's Nebraska concoctions, and it's really good.

Ham Balls are like meat balls, but they use ground ham instead of beef. We only have them whenever we go to Nebraska for Thanksgiving... O. M. G. They're incredible.

Oh at first I thought they were served together....  :yuck

Ok, Ham balls sounds really good. Your other thing there reminds me of Watergate Salad that my mom makes that everybody loves but I won't eat for principle alone. It's fucking green and I'm gagging thinking about it. But I bet my whole family would love this Green Stuff you speak of.

what's the marinade/spice for the ham balls?

It might be spicy brown mustard? This is the first link I pulled up:

My wife's aunt makes a sweet glaze for them, it's not brown mustard.

We go to Nebraska every other year for Thanksgiving, and this is a Nebraska year, I'm so looking forward to eating ham balls on Thursday.

Going to my wife's family gathering for Thanksgiving.  They always have a nice mixture of traditional foods and Salvadoran foods.

I was going to make something this year but Lennedsay never sent me the recipe like she said she would  8)

This is what I started with, but I cooked it at a lower temp for longer, and used milk and regular corn because I didn't have creamed corn. http://www.food.com/recipe/shortcut-sweet-corn-cake-145775?scaleto=12&mode=null&st=true

Chevy's recipe is more complicated and has some flour in there that I didn't have, but I guarantee you could find in Texas with all that delicious fresh Mexican and Hispanic food. :drool

Going to Philly and staying with friends for a few days starting Wednesday. Don't know whats on the menu as they are taking care of everything. I do want to go to a local deli and get some prosciutto and other fine meats for an appetizer.

Copious amounts of alcohol will be consumed. That is the only thing I know for sure.

The only things we did differently were added a bit of sea salt and a teaspoon of soy, and didn't have vinegar, so left that out like you said. Also we had this specialty mustard that made it :drool

Also finished gooey butter cake, vanilla cake with chocolate fudge icing, spinach artichoke dip, and the turkey is brining. :drool Everything else is tomorrow...

What the fuck. My aunt gave this crazy ass CHOCOLATE WINE tonight. I was like,"No way, this has to be a liqueur." But it wasn't! Billy, your thoughts?!?! It had the taste and flavor of a liqueur but the texture of wine. It blew my fucking mind.

"Where did you get this?"

"9 bucks at Wal-Mart."

@_@

Anyways, my Thanksgiving was alright. Was a pretty standard affair for my family.
