If you have ComicZeal, or PDF Readers, or pretty much any app that uses Apple's distinguished mentally-challenged filesharing, prepare to just restore, because that backup is going to take you upwards of 24 hours (!) according to various forums, if you have files stored in them.  iTunes locked up on me 3 times trying to cancel out of the backup and I had to task manager out of it.  So now I have to go through all the bullshit of loading files back into every single app, and I've lost all game saves, etc. The iPad has been great, but everything connected with it software-wise has just been a miserable experience which sucks every last drop of fun out of owning one.

Some dude on Gizmodo asked in the comments how he could upgrade since he'd never connected his iPad to a computer, and everyone was all "lol you're fucked" :lol

i just never bother upgrading anymore, it's too much hassle backing up all that shit. The upgrades are usually just cosmetic crap that don't matter to me anyway.

My backup didn't take any longer then normal, but I'm on an iPhone 4 so that may be it.

Well, some folks were in my ear about how awesome this update was, so I'm starting the install....NOW. This should be fun. I'm resigned to not using the iPad for the 24hrs or so.

Gadget freak and SF author Charlie Stross posted on his blog that Find My iPhone is now free if you're using iOS 4.2.1, even for people not using MobileMe's exhorbitant services.

However, it appears that my 3rd gen iPod Touch is, for some reason, not supported. "Device Not Supported: This iPod touch is not qualified for free MobileMe service." It offers a "Learn More" option from that dialog, but the linked page doesn't note any limitations based on which generation touch is used.

Edit: mea culpa -- it says it in the fine print on the page: "* You can create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 4.2. Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2. Find My iPhone is not available in all countries."

Well, the back-up is still running. After 3 or 4 hrs the progress bar has barely moved. On the other hand, the charge indicator has dropped alarmingly. There is seemingly no way to complete this without it draining the battery, at least using this USB port. Jesus. Basically the only option seems to be to delete all my content manually first to give it less to back up.

The update installed on my iPhone 4 very quickly; I have Comiczeal on it too.  Not too many comics on there right now, however...maybe around 60?  Do you guys have a lot more than that?

I had GBs worth of comics, and tons of pdf files as well

on ipad we were still on 3.2 firmware and that seems to have been the problem, since the upgrade to 4.2 my backups have been a lot faster, as in "minutes instead of hours" faster
