Retro PC Gaming: The Longest Journey
« on: December 02, 2010, 08:54:14 PM »

All done with Dragon Age. I'm looking to the past to fulfill my present needs, and so I've decided to give one of the best adventure games a spin.

I hope this one keeps me as occupied and interested as Dragon Age did.

Is anyone interested in playing this one again or for the first time? Or am I going to be the only jerk responsible for keeping this topic alive?

game sucks, overrated euro trash

it's okay, but it's like a 9/10 for the first few chapters then delves into the re-re zone for the last half

The sequel would have been pretty awesome if they had made it into a videogame instead of a machinima.

Well, what other long and memorable PC adventure game would you guys recommend? I'm looking for something with interesting characters, a good storyline, and excellent pacing.

I've played Longest Journey for a few hours and it seems okay, although it does take a while for these kind of games to start to pick up.

I'm playing Monkey island 2: Special Edition on my ipod touch. It's pretty much the same game with remastered music, better art, voice acting, and a better interface. The original is a classic, but I think these features put it on masterpiece level on par with Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango.

If you haven't played it, start there.

Well Grimm Fandango is my favorite adventure game ever so I will always mention that. Not because the puzzles are the best in it.

They aren't.

But because its my favorite world and characters ever created in one of those titles.

I always wanted to play the longest journey but its one of those games I started but stopped and never came back to.

Outside of Broken Sword and, now, the Longest Journey, I haven't played a lot of PC adventure titles. I've yet to play any of the games recommended in this thread, actually, for the exception of Broken Sword.

I'll research and then pick up whatever you guys recommend.

EDIT: Going to sleep, now. But I'll come back to this thread in the morning to check for any updates. I still want to explore The Longest Journey some more before investigating some of the other titles. Thanks, guys.

Well, all of the ones suggested are great places to start.

- Maniac Mansion Deluxe (free for pc)
- Monkey Island 1/2 (special editions available on steam, ios)
- Day of the Tentacle (rumored to be the next remake from Lucas)
- The Dig (is on steam)
- Full Throttle
- Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis (is on steam)
- Broken Sword 2 (is on steam)
- Grim Fandango
- Beneath a Steel Sky (is on steam)
- Loom (is on steam)
- Sam and Max: Hit the Road

Quite honestly I mostly stick with Lucastarts games when it comes to this genre. I've tried some Sierra games and aside from Leisure Suit Larry they're not my thing. Then again I could use some suggestions myself.

Longest Journey was good but not quite great.  Doesn't help that it was incredibly overrated.  I still like it and will play Dreamfall someday, but it's definitely a step below the top tier adventure games.

Longest journey was great when i played it YEARS AGO. Seemed so edgy and adult  at the time. It had swears and cusses and to this day, the most memorable part of the game (and gaming in general) for me was when someone said the word "wanker" in it (i was like 'HOLY SHIT THIS IS GREAT' at the time. I seem to recall it had good voice work and an interesting story as well. Dunno if i can stomach it now as a grown ass man tho.

Dreamfall >>>>> The Longest Journey

Skip TLJ and go directly to Dreamfall.  Just save yourself the trouble and read a TLJ snyopsis somewhere online.  TLJ is completely overrated nonsense.  Not a fun game at all.

Dreamfall is the game that made that series interesting.....too bad we'll never get another game so they could wrap it up. :(  Definitely one of the best stories in any videogame.

Yeah, I won't be able to finish TLJ. The game just isn't inspiring or fun, and it doesn't help that the presentation is pretty bad.

Fuck.

I wanted to play a sit-down and chill adventure game after finally beating Dragon Age, and this game ended up being more exhausting than even that one.

I'll check out 2 more recommendations.

yeah TLJ is a long, long, tough adventure game.  Not really for a fun short read :P

If you want something short and fun go play the chzo mythos.  Each game is only about 2 hours for ~8 hours total and the puzzles/story are great.  Plus they're free.

Info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chzo_Mythos

Downloads:
http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm

First game is 5 days a stranger and keep in mind it's the weakest of the 4 entries because you can tell Yahtzee didn't realize he was going to make a series out of it while writing the first one.  When the 2nd one starts building off of that it gets a lot more interesting and the 3rd game is AWESOME and one of the best adventure games out there.  4th is neat too.

It's also neat because you always hear people to tell game critics "well why don't you make a better game then?" and Yahtzee talks smack on all these games with Zero Punctuation and then he makes a game and it's better than 90% of them :)

Maniac Mansion Deluxe.

Better looking rendition of the classic game with the scumm interface, if you haven't played it, do so.

http://www.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=401

Next to Day of the Tenacle and Monkey Island games I can't think of an adventure that is nearly as fun as this. You pick two characters to go along with you. Each character has their uses whether it's technology and electronics, or being able to use the photo lab room. Since puzzles are based around what characters you pick to go with you, this means that there are a billion ways to solve puzzles and beat the story. One route that works with one party may not work with another.

It's a remake of the classic game and it's free. MM can be beaten in 4-5 hours and it has the replay value to want to play a second, third, or even tenth time due the sheer number of ways there are to beat the game.

Maniac Mansion is definitely a good one. But it can be tricky to figure out by yourself.

The whole point of these games is the atmosphere and environment imo, more than figuring everything out. But if the puzzles are easy to figure out, more power to them.

Damn, that was a wasted $10.00.

Purchased Amnesia: The Dark Descent off STEAM. Why did they have to make this game so intimidating? They could have polished the gameplay a bit, instead they had to make the atmosphere unbearable to play through.

Errr, Amnesia is pretty polished.

Penumbra is unpolished euro game.  Amnesia is Penumbra polished for a mainstream audience and thanks to that it got a lot of great foreign reviews and word of mouth.

What do you find unbearable about the atmosphere?

Why they gotta make this game so scary? First 5 minutes of the game I'm in a dark lobby and the wind blows open the door in front of me. How am I supposed to focus on the storyline and gameplay with the game always trying to frighten me to death? Horror games need to be balanced in that regard and this isn't it.

First, the game discouraged that sort of mentality in the opening message.

Second, you don't know me, slim. I don't want to cause trouble or be a problem with anyone here, so let's leave names out of it. Don't let my avatar and user name fool you, champ, I'll stomp a mudhole in that ass of yours.
